For most creators, OBS is the better starting point for a 24/7 guided meditation stream: it has a graphical scene-and-source workflow, a documented media-file loop option, and an automatic reconnect setting. FFmpeg can suit a command-line setup, but verify looping, reconnection, and process recovery for your installed build before relying on it unattended. Both must meet YouTube’s ingest requirements; neither encoder setting alone guarantees a continuous stream.
Choose OBS or FFmpeg based on how you will operate the stream
| Decision | OBS | FFmpeg |
|---|---|---|
| Workflow | Graphical settings, scenes, and sources are documented by the OBS Project. This suits a background visual, prerecorded audio or video, titles, and transitions. | A command-line pipeline may suit an operator who prefers scripts and fixed inputs. The sources covered here do not establish version-specific FFmpeg options for this use. |
| Looping a media file | OBS Media Source includes a Loop option to replay a file after it ends; see the Media Sources guide. | Exact looping behavior and command options are not established here. Check the documentation for your installed version and test the actual media. |
| Recovery | The OBS overview documents an automatic reconnect configuration. Reconnection is useful, but does not make the entire setup fault-proof. | Reconnect and process-supervision behavior depend on the build and deployment; verify them before leaving a stream unattended. |
| YouTube delivery | Must follow YouTube’s current supported stream settings. | Must follow the same YouTube settings. |
This is a workflow recommendation, not a performance benchmark. Prefer OBS if you want to compose or adjust scenes visually. FFmpeg may be appropriate if you already operate a tested command-line pipeline and can supervise failures.
Configure YouTube output before building for 24/7 use
YouTube’s live encoder settings list RTMP or RTMPS ingest, H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1 video, frame rates up to 60 fps, AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate (CBR), and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. YouTube recommends RTMPS, which encrypts the stream as it travels to and through Google’s servers. Use the protocol and settings supported by your encoder and YouTube’s current guidance.
Match bitrate to the output
Bitrate recommendations vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate. YouTube’s current table, whose publication year is not stated on the retrieved page, recommends these H.264 examples:
#1 Best Overall

| H.264 output | YouTube recommended bitrate |
|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 4 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 14 Mbps |
These are YouTube recommendations, not a promise that your encoder or internet connection can sustain the output. Select the row matching the actual codec, resolution, and frame rate rather than applying one bitrate to every stream.
Protect the stream key and choose viewer controls
Configure the stream key in the encoder’s stream settings and keep it private; YouTube explains stream setup and key handling in its live stream setup guidance. YouTube’s live-stream settings also include latency and DVR controls. Lower latency may increase playback buffering; DVR lets viewers pause and resume while the stream is live. Choose these as viewer-experience settings, separately from codec and encoder choice.

Build and test the do-it-yourself stream
The steps below use OBS because its documented media source and reconnect setting fit a guided stream with prerecorded material. OBS labels can vary by version, so confirm the matching setting in the version you install. This is a setup checklist, not a tested 24/7 deployment recipe.
- Prepare the content. Decide whether the stream is a single video file or a scene that combines visuals and audio. Check that you have the rights to stream every recording, music track, image, and other asset. YouTube’s copyright rules still apply to live and prerecorded material; looping content does not create permission to use it.
- Create an OBS scene. Add the needed visual and media sources, then confirm their order and appearance in the preview. For a single prerecorded file, add a Media Source and enable its Loop option so it replays after it ends. For separate audio and visuals, check that the audio source remains active and synchronized as intended.
- Set the output. In OBS stream/output settings, select an encoder and output resolution and frame rate that your computer and connection can sustain. Configure CBR, a two-second keyframe interval (not over four seconds), a YouTube-recommended bitrate for the chosen codec and output, and AAC or MP3 audio, following YouTube’s current encoder guidance. Avoid assuming that a higher setting is always better; the source media, encoding capacity, and upload connection all matter.
- Connect to YouTube. In YouTube’s live control room, create or select the stream and copy its stream key into OBS’s stream settings. Use RTMPS when supported. Never publish the key or include it in screenshots or logs shared publicly.
- Set recovery behavior. Enable OBS’s automatic reconnect option in its stream settings. Treat it as one recovery measure, not a replacement for monitoring, a stable network, or a way to restart a failed computer or encoder process.
- Test privately or before announcing the stream. Start with representative audio and movement, then check the preview, sound level, sync, and YouTube stream-health messages. YouTube advises testing before going live and using audio and movement similar to the intended broadcast.
- Test the full failure path. Check that the media loops without an unwanted gap, audio does not stop or become unsuitable, the stream reconnects after a brief network interruption, and you can restart OBS and resume the broadcast if it exits. Arrange a way to notice alerts while live. A successful start alone does not establish unattended reliability.
Plan for bandwidth and continuous operation
YouTube advises running a speed test and leaving upload bandwidth headroom. Its streaming tips recommend 20% room above the stream’s bandwidth needs and warn that a connectivity disruption could break the stream. The recommendation is guidance, not a guarantee: other traffic, Wi-Fi conditions, and service interruptions can still affect delivery. Prefer a stable connection and avoid saturating the upload link with unrelated traffic.

- Blue VO!CE software: Elevate your streamings and recordings with clear broadcast vocal sound and entertain your audience with enhanced effects, advanced modulation and HD audio samples
- Four pickup patterns: Flexible cardioid, omni, bidirectional, and stereo pickup patterns allow you to record in ways that would normally require multiple mics, for vocals, instruments and podcasts
- Onboard audio controls: Headphone volume, pattern selection, instant mute, and mic gain put you in charge of every level of the audio recording and streaming process
- Positionable design: Pivot the mic in relation to the sound source to optimize your sound quality thanks to the adjustable desktop stand and track your voice in real time with no-latency monitoring
For a 24/7 stream, the computer running OBS, its power, internet connection, and the encoder process all become part of the chain. A reconnect setting addresses some dropped connections, but does not itself recover from a power loss, computer restart, source failure, or an application that cannot restart. Test those cases and decide who or what will detect and respond to them. No long-duration reliability test or OBS-versus-FFmpeg benchmark is established here.
Common problems and what to check
- YouTube reports poor stream health: compare the actual codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, CBR, and keyframe interval with YouTube’s current settings. Check upload capacity and reduce competing network traffic if needed.
- The stream drops during network trouble: confirm OBS automatic reconnect is enabled, then test reconnection rather than assuming it will work in every outage. YouTube warns that connection disruptions can break a stream.
- The media ends instead of repeating: check the OBS Media Source Loop option and test past the end of the file. For FFmpeg, verify the looping method against the installed version; no version-specific command is established here.
- Audio is missing, too quiet, or stops: inspect the active audio source and meters in OBS, then test the complete loop with representative material before the public stream.
- The stream does not return after the encoder exits: reconnect settings do not necessarily restart a failed application or computer. Test process restart and power/network recovery separately, and establish a monitoring and response plan.
- Viewers report buffering: review stream health and the chosen output settings. If you selected lower latency, remember YouTube notes that it may increase playback buffering.
Or let it run in the cloud
If maintaining a computer, home connection, and restart plan is the part you want to avoid, StreamNeo keeps a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops the media in the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Each slot streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot; it does not re-encode, and there are no quality tiers. StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. Monthly is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos and streams to YouTube only; it is not a camera broadcast.
