Short answer: Choose OBS if you need a graphical production interface and operator-managed scenes. Choose FFmpeg if your inputs, stream mapping and outputs can be described in a repeatable command, and you can handle process monitoring and recovery. Neither encoder, by itself, makes a YouTube channel reliable around the clock: continuity depends on the full chain from source and encoding capacity to network, YouTube ingest, power and restart procedures.

For a YouTube-only option that avoids keeping a computer running, StreamNeo is #1 among the cloud ways discussed here: it loops uploaded videos from the cloud, at any quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, with the first day free. Details follow the do-it-yourself comparison.

What OBS and FFmpeg each suit

This is a workflow choice, not a measured reliability or quality contest. The available official documentation does not establish a controlled 24/7 uptime, dropped-frame or output-quality winner between OBS and FFmpeg.

Decision point OBS tends to suit FFmpeg tends to suit
Production control A person who wants a graphical interface and scene-oriented operation. A workflow expressible as inputs, filters, stream mappings and outputs in a command or script.
Repeatability A saved application configuration that fits the operator’s process. A scripted pipeline with explicit stream selection and output settings.
Operations A setup where someone can supervise the graphical application. An operator able to add background execution, logging, monitoring and restart controls. FFmpeg’s documented background advice is not a complete supervision system.
Encoding load OBS can use a supported GPU hardware encoder to shift encoding work off the CPU. FFmpeg can use an available encoder, depending on its build, platform and configuration; verify the actual setup.

Choose OBS for operator-led production

OBS’s hardware-encoding guidance says hardware encoders are generally recommended for performance because they move work from the CPU to a specialized GPU component. That is guidance about hardware encoding, not evidence OBS encodes better or faster than FFmpeg. FFmpeg can also use hardware encoders. Test the intended source, codec, resolution and frame rate on the actual machine before settling on a configuration.

Choose FFmpeg for explicit, scripted pipelines

FFmpeg describes itself as a universal media converter and supports multiple inputs and outputs, including live capture or recording devices. Its -map option allows manual stream selection. The flexibility is useful for reproducible jobs, but it also puts responsibility for input selection, mapping, codec, rate control, audio, output format, errors, logs and process lifecycle on the operator.

YouTube’s 4K60 encoder settings

YouTube Help’s live encoder guidance, accessed in 2026, lists RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, H.265 (HEVC) and AV1, with frame rates up to 60 fps. For 2160p at 60 fps, bitrate guidance depends on codec; do not treat the H.264 recommendation as a universal target for every codec.

Setting YouTube guidance for 4K60
AV1 or H.265 (HEVC) video bitrate 10 Mbps minimum; 40 Mbps maximum.
H.264 video bitrate 35 Mbps recommended.
Rate control CBR.
Keyframe interval 2 seconds recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds.
Frame rate Up to 60 fps.
Audio AAC or MP3.
Picture format Square pixels and progressive scan.
Other listed video details Two B-frames. For SDR, Rec. 709 and 8-bit; YouTube names HEVC for HDR and says AV1 is not supported for HDR in this context.

These are YouTube’s published encoder settings, not a guarantee that a particular computer, connection or ingest session will sustain them. Requirements can change, so check YouTube’s current live encoder settings before configuring a production stream.

Use the same ingest targets with either encoder

OBS configuration approach

  1. In YouTube Live Control Room, create or select the live stream and copy its stream key. Keep the key private; anyone who obtains it may be able to broadcast to the channel.
  2. In OBS, open Settings → Stream, choose YouTube as the service, and enter or select the stream key. OBS labels can vary by version and service integration; confirm the selected destination is YouTube.
  3. Open Settings → Output and configure the streaming encoder, codec and rate control to match the YouTube guidance above. Use CBR and set the keyframe interval to 2 seconds, ensuring it does not exceed 4 seconds. The exact codec and bitrate available depend on the selected encoder and system.
  4. Open Settings → Video, set the output resolution to 3840 × 2160 and frame rate to 60 fps if the source and system can sustain them. Avoid upscaling lower-resolution material as a substitute for native 4K detail.
  5. Set audio to AAC or MP3 and check the output audio stream. YouTube’s guidance also calls for square pixels, progressive scan and two B-frames; verify what the selected encoder actually emits.
  6. Start with a private or unlisted test where appropriate. Watch OBS statistics and YouTube Live Control Room for dropped frames, ingest warnings and stream health before relying on the setup unattended.

FFmpeg configuration approach

There is no one safe universal FFmpeg command for a 24/7 channel: the right command depends on source type, stream layout, installed build and chosen encoder. Treat this as a configuration checklist rather than a copy-paste command.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Identify the input and its video and audio streams. Use -map explicitly when stream selection should be deterministic; do not assume the first audio or video stream is the intended one.
  2. Choose an encoder supported by the installed FFmpeg build and hardware. Set the output to 3840 × 2160 at 60 fps only if the source and encoding system can sustain that format.
  3. Configure the chosen codec to follow YouTube’s current requirements: CBR, a 2-second keyframe interval (never over 4 seconds), the codec-specific bitrate target, supported audio and the applicable picture-format requirements. Encoder option names and behavior differ, so check the installed version’s documentation.
  4. Use YouTube’s recommended RTMPS endpoint and the stream key from Live Control Room. Protect the key; avoid putting it in a publicly readable script or log.
  5. For a process running in the background, FFmpeg’s FAQ recommends -nostdin or redirecting standard input so the process does not suspend while checking for console input. This only addresses one background-process hazard; it does not restart the process or detect a failed stream.
  6. Test the output in YouTube Live Control Room and inspect logs and stream health. Add a separate process supervisor, alerts and restart policy if unattended operation is required.

Plan for the whole 24/7 chain

A stream that runs all day depends on more than its encoder. The source must remain available; the machine must have enough encoding capacity; the network path, power and YouTube ingest must hold; and the process must be monitored and recover after faults. An encoder setting or background flag is not a failover plan.

  • Source: Confirm that the media or capture source remains available and that loops or transitions behave as intended.
  • Capacity: Test the actual resolution, frame rate, codec and source on the target machine. Hardware-encoding guidance is not a performance guarantee for a particular GPU.
  • Network and power: Assess the connection and power continuity where the encoder runs. A working encoder cannot compensate for a lost network or power.
  • Monitoring and recovery: Decide how you will detect a frozen input, process exit, dropped connection or YouTube ingest problem, and who or what will restart or investigate it.
  • Stream policy: Use material you have rights to broadcast and check YouTube’s copyright and monetization policies. A technically valid continuous stream does not itself establish permission to use the content or eligibility for monetization.

RTMPS or HLS?

YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension to RTMP; FFmpeg defines RTMPS as RTMP carried over a secure SSL connection. Use the current YouTube-provided RTMPS ingest details unless your workflow has a reason to assess another supported route.

Google’s separate HLS ingest guidance specifies an M2TS container, H.264 or HEVC video, AAC audio, closed GOPs and frame rates up to 60 fps; it also describes HDR support using HEVC. HLS is a distinct route to evaluate when encoder or delivery requirements call for it, not a blanket replacement for YouTube’s RTMPS recommendation. See Google’s HLS ingestion guide.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does using FFmpeg in the background make a stream self-restarting?

No. The documented -nostdin advice prevents a background process from waiting on console input; a separate supervisor or restart mechanism is needed.

Can either setup guarantee 24/7 uptime?

No. The encoder is only one part of the production chain, and the cited official material does not establish comparative 24/7 uptime.
