Use OBS’s built-in Media Source for a single file. VLC Video Source requires VLC to be installed, and 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. Neither source gives you permission to broadcast the music; clear the recording and composition rights and any required Content ID allowlisting before you go live.
Which OBS source should you choose?
| Your need | Source | What it supports |
|---|---|---|
| Play one local audio or video file | Media Source | OBS’s built-in source for an individual media file, with playback controls including looping. |
| Play several local files as a playlist | VLC Video Source | A playlist of media items, with controls to loop or shuffle the list. |
| Avoid installing another application | Media Source, if it supports your file and playback needs | VLC Video Source depends on VLC being installed and detected by OBS. |
| Use VLC Video Source with 64-bit OBS | VLC Video Source | Install 64-bit VLC to match 64-bit OBS. |
These are input-source choices, not a quality ranking. OBS does not establish that either source is inherently more reliable or higher quality in every setup. VLC is the practical choice when you need a multi-file playlist and playlist-level loop or shuffle controls; the built-in Media Source avoids the VLC dependency for a single file. See the OBS Project’s Media Sources documentation.
Set up a local music playlist in OBS
- Install OBS Studio and VLC. If your OBS installation is 64-bit, install 64-bit VLC. If VLC Video Source does not appear in the source list, check that VLC is installed and that its architecture matches OBS.
- Add the source to your scene. In OBS, select or create the scene for the stream. In the Sources panel, choose +, select VLC Video Source, and create or select a source.
- Add the files to the playlist. Use the source’s playlist controls to add local audio or video files you have the right to stream. An OBS media playlist is not the same as a playlist hosted on YouTube; the cited OBS documentation does not establish that a YouTube playlist URL can be imported as a local playlist.
- Set playback behavior. Choose whether to loop the playlist or shuffle it. OBS documents loop enabled and shuffle disabled as defaults; these are defaults, not universal performance recommendations. Review the source’s visibility behavior, audio track and subtitle controls as relevant to your files.
- Check sound and picture in OBS. Play the playlist in the preview, confirm the expected files advance, and check audio levels and video framing if the files include visuals. Confirm the scene does not unintentionally crop or obscure the picture.
- Connect OBS to YouTube using current instructions. Enable streaming for your channel and configure the encoder stream using YouTube’s current live-stream setup guidance. Follow the current YouTube Studio flow for the stream key and event; interface labels can change. Do not share the stream key.
- Preview before going live. Check the encoder preview, audio, visuals and stream health before starting the public broadcast. Keep a separate record of rights and any allowlisting confirmation for the exact tracks.
The OBS source documentation describes configuration options such as visibility behavior (stop/restart, pause/unpause or always play), network caching, audio track and subtitles. It lists 400 ms as the default network-cache value. Treat that as a documented default, not a recommended value for every network or media file. The sequence above describes the documented source workflow; it is not a claim of a live test.
Clear music rights before broadcasting
Using VLC or Media Source only controls how OBS plays a file. It does not grant broadcast rights. For each track, confirm permissions for the specific sound recording and underlying composition, the territories reached by the stream, and both live and archived use if you plan to keep a replay. Check the actual license terms for monetization and attribution too. The available official platform guidance does not establish a complete India-specific legal checklist or determine which permissions apply to a particular Indian song or use; seek qualified rights advice for your repertoire and circumstances.

- Check Content ID arrangements. YouTube scans live streams for third-party material. If you have permission, ask the rights holder whether your channel must be added to its Content ID allowlist. A license by itself may not prevent an interruption when the channel is not allowlisted.
- Understand possible enforcement. YouTube says that when third-party content is detected, it may replace the stream with a placeholder and warn the streamer; continued use can lead to temporary interruption or termination. Its guidance states: “All live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content, including copyrighted content in the form of another live broadcast.” See YouTube’s live-stream copyright guidance.
- Do not assume “free” or “royalty-free” means cleared. YouTube warns that a “free” label does not prevent a Content ID claim. Its safe-music guidance points to public-domain music, music used with permission, original music and the Audio Library; still verify terms for your intended live and archived use.
- Do not use Creator Music tracks as a livestream solution. YouTube’s current Creator Music usage details say its licensed and revenue-sharing tracks cannot be used in livestreams. That guidance also says Creator Music is available to U.S. creators in the YouTube Partner Program, with expansion outside the U.S. pending; it is not an established solution for an India-based music livestream.
YouTube’s livestream terms say providers represent that they have the necessary rights for live content on Google services worldwide, including relevant music rights, and have met applicable requirements in the stream territory. This is a platform contract statement, not a ruling about what Indian law requires for a specific broadcast.
Check YouTube eligibility for an encoder stream
YouTube’s general live-stream guidance says a channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days; a person must be at least 16 to live stream. Use the current YouTube eligibility and setup guidance to confirm requirements before scheduling. Requirements for mobile streaming are not the right basis for this OBS computer/encoder workflow.
Troubleshoot common source and stream problems
- VLC Video Source is missing: Install VLC, restart OBS, and verify matching architecture. For 64-bit OBS, use 64-bit VLC.
- Playlist will not advance or repeat as expected: Reopen the VLC Video Source properties and check the playlist contents and loop/shuffle selections. Confirm the current item is not paused.
- File plays but has no sound: Check the source’s audio-track selection, OBS mixer activity, and output routing. Make sure the source is not muted and that the selected scene is the one being sent to the stream.
- Video appears cropped or missing: Inspect the source in the scene preview and adjust its framing or transform so the content fits the canvas.
- Stream is interrupted after music starts: Check YouTube Studio alerts and the live-stream copyright page. A rights license may not be enough if Content ID allowlisting is required; contact the rights holder and resolve the claim before restarting.
- YouTube does not accept the stream: Confirm channel verification and eligibility, then follow YouTube’s current encoder setup flow and verify the stream key. Avoid relying on older interface screenshots for labels that may have changed.
