If an OBS video source stops when a playlist item ends, first identify which source you are using. In the built-in VLC Video source, enable Loop Playlist to restart after the last file. For a single-file Media Source, enable Loop to replay that file. If you use the separate Media Playlist Source plugin, check that its version matches your OBS version. These sources have different controls, so the right fix depends on the source type.
Identify which OBS source is freezing
In OBS, select the source and open its properties. Check the source type before changing settings:
- VLC Video: OBS’s built-in source for playing a playlist of media files.
- Media Source: OBS’s built-in source for an individual media file.
- Media Playlist Source: a separate third-party plugin, not the built-in VLC Video source.
Decide what should happen at the end: replay the same file, restart a playlist after its final item, move on to the next item, or hide the completed video. That distinction determines which setting to use.
Fix the built-in VLC Video playlist
Enable Loop Playlist
- In OBS, select the VLC Video source and open Properties.
- Enable Loop Playlist.
- Apply the setting and test the playlist through its final item. With looping enabled, the playlist should restart after it runs out of media files.
OBS documents Loop Playlist as the control for whether a source restarts after it has run out of media files. It is different from the single-file Loop setting. See the OBS Project’s Media Sources documentation.

Check that VLC is installed and matches OBS
The VLC Video source requires VLC to be installed. OBS specifies that 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. If VLC Video is unavailable or the playlist does not behave as expected, verify the installation and bitness before moving on to plugin troubleshooting.
Fix a single-file Media Source that stops at the end
Use Loop to replay the file
- Open the single-file Media Source properties.
- Enable Loop if you want the same file to repeat.
- Apply the setting and test playback through the end of the file.
Hide the last frame when playback ends
If the problem is that the completed video’s final frame stays visible, enable Show nothing when playback ends in the Media Source properties. This hides the source after playback completes; it does not restart the file or enable playlist looping.

Troubleshoot the Media Playlist Source plugin
The Media Playlist Source is a third-party alternative to VLC Video. Check its OBS compatibility and update history rather than assuming its settings or behavior match the built-in source.
- The plugin resource lists OBS 31 as the minimum version for plugin versions 0.1.0 and later. Confirm your OBS version meets the requirement for the plugin version you have installed.
- The plugin’s update history describes fixes for playback not continuing after a transition and when the same video path appears again in a playlist. Those changelog notes concern specific defects; they do not guarantee that every end-of-item freeze is fixed.
Check the Media Playlist Source forum resource for its requirements and the plugin update history for relevant fixes.

Check visibility automation if the source is hidden and shown at the end
If a scene or automation hides and immediately shows the source as playback ends, test once without that visibility change. An OBS issue report describes a restart failure in a specific fast hide/show case at playback end in OBS 30.2.0; the issue is marked closed as not planned. It is a narrow report, not proof that visibility automation causes other playlist freezes. See OBS issue #11040.
When the settings do not explain the freeze
The documented controls and plugin notes do not establish one universal cause for a source freezing at the end of an item. Before changing more settings or replacing a source, collect details that distinguish a loop-setting issue from a transition, compatibility, or playback problem:

- OBS version and operating system.
- Exact source type: Media Source, VLC Video, or Media Playlist Source.
- Whether the playlist item is a local file or network-based.
- Whether the next item starts, the playlist restarts, or the last frame simply remains visible.
- Whether the symptom occurs after a transition, when a file path repeats, or when visibility automation runs.
- A current OBS log that covers a reproduction of the issue.
