If an OBS update broke your 24/7 YouTube stream, preserve your current settings and scenes before changing versions. Export the active OBS Profile and Scene Collection separately, choose the older build from OBS’s official releases page, and validate the setup before reconnecting it to production. A rollback can help isolate an OBS-version problem, but it cannot guarantee uninterrupted YouTube playback.
1. Back up the Profile and Scene Collection separately
If OBS still opens, protect the configuration before installing another version. OBS Profiles contain stream, video, and output settings; they can be exported to JSON for backup or imported into another installation. Profiles do not contain your scenes. OBS’s guide explicitly says, “Profiles do NOT store your Scenes — use Scene Collections.” (OBS Profiles guide, published January 14, 2022.)
- Export the Profile: In OBS, open the Profile menu and choose Import/Export, then export the active Profile. Keep the resulting JSON file somewhere outside the OBS installation folder.
- Export the Scene Collection: Open the Scene Collection menu and use its export option to save the active collection separately. Store it alongside, but not in place of, the Profile backup.
- Record dependencies: Note any plugins your production needs and the locations of media files used by scenes. The exports do not establish that plugins, media files, or every credential will be preserved by a downgrade.
If OBS will not open, do not assume reinstalling will preserve or restore everything. The exact manual configuration-file recovery steps vary by operating system and require platform-specific instructions beyond the official sources cited here. Avoid deleting or overwriting the existing configuration while seeking that guidance.
2. Choose the intended OBS release and matching package
Use the official OBS Studio releases history to locate the version you want to try, then confirm that its package is for your operating system. The archive changes over time: when checked on October 3, 2026, it listed stable OBS Studio 32.2.2 and prerelease 33.0.0-beta4. Those are dated observations, not a recommendation to install either version; check the release page again when choosing a build.

- Download from the OBS project’s official release page or official download route, and match the package to Windows, macOS, or Linux as applicable.
- Do not use a Windows installer as a general downgrade method for macOS or Linux.
- Where practical, try the older build with copies of the exported configuration first. The sources do not establish how a downgrade will handle configuration or plugins changed or migrated by a newer build.
The OBS Help Portal is the project’s support entry point, but it does not provide a rollback-specific universal procedure.
3. Choose a recovery route

OBS’s portable-mode guide, published July 23, 2024, describes a ZIP-based Windows setup that stores configuration alongside the application. This can be useful for checking a second version without sharing the usual configuration. Follow the current guide’s instructions for setting it up; portable mode is not supported there for macOS or Linux.

Portable mode does not automatically bring along all media used by scenes. Verify that each file path resolves in the test setup; moving the portable folder does not guarantee that relative or external media paths will still work.
4. Validate before returning to production
Once the selected build opens, check the configuration before relying on it for a continuous broadcast. These are operational checks based on the distinct Profile and Scene Collection settings—not a claim that a rollback has been tested.

- Scenes and sources: Check scene order, source visibility, and whether media files resolve at their expected paths.
- Stream connection: Confirm the streaming service and account or stream-key configuration. Do not expose a stream key while sharing screenshots or logs.
- Output: Check output resolution, frame rate, and the settings your working stream requires.
- Audio and encoder: Verify audio routing and that the encoder your setup depends on is available.
- Plugins: Confirm that required plugins load and behave as expected with the selected OBS version; preservation or compatibility is not guaranteed.
5. Decide carefully if the encoder is already disconnected
If OBS is down, inspect the actual broadcast state in YouTube Studio’s live control room before reconnecting, restarting the encoder, or creating a new event. The cited sources do not establish whether a particular YouTube event will remain live, retain its URL or archive, or avoid an interruption to viewer playback after an encoder disconnect. Treat each action as a decision based on the live control room—not as a guaranteed continuity fix.
Neither reinstalling OBS nor testing a portable build guarantees that a 24/7 stream will stay online. If continuous operation matters, account for the possibility that changing encoders interrupts the broadcast.
