To mix portrait and landscape videos in OBS without distortion, preserve each source’s aspect ratio: fit it inside the canvas when the whole image must remain visible, or crop and zoom when filling the frame matters more than keeping the edges. Do not stretch a mismatched source to fill. OBS’s canvas and output resolution are separate settings, and YouTube’s optional vertical presentation is a separate layout from your OBS scene.
Choose the canvas for the composition you want
OBS’s Base (Canvas) Resolution is the workspace where you arrange sources. Output (Scaled) Resolution determines the resolution sent to the stream or recording. Changing the canvas can require you to reposition or resize sources; changing output resolution does not rearrange the scene.
For one conventional horizontal YouTube stream, a 16:9 canvas is a common choice. OBS describes 16:9 as the most common device aspect ratio and says major platforms, including YouTube, expect it. It is general guidance, not a requirement for every stream. Choose a portrait canvas if the intended composition is vertical, or plan separate layouts if you need both orientations.
Fit, crop, or fill: choose per source
| Choice | What happens | Use it when |
|---|---|---|
| Fit | The entire source remains visible and its proportions stay intact. Empty canvas space may remain around it. | Important content reaches the edges, or viewers need to see the full portrait or landscape image. |
| Crop or zoom | The source keeps its proportions but extends beyond the frame; parts outside the frame are hidden. | Filling the frame matters more than retaining every edge, and the cropped area contains no essential content. |
| Stretch | The source is forced into the frame’s proportions and becomes distorted. | Avoid this for mismatched portrait and landscape footage. OBS warns that stretching warps and distorts a source and is generally not recommended. |
Fit and fill are composition choices, not competing quality settings: fitting preserves the full image, while filling by cropping sacrifices some of it. Decide what may be lost before enlarging a source beyond the canvas.

Set up mixed sources in OBS
- Set the scene’s canvas and output separately. In OBS, open Settings > Video and choose the Base (Canvas) Resolution for your intended composition and the Output (Scaled) Resolution for the delivered stream. Pick the canvas orientation first; changing it later can mean realigning sources.
- Add each video as its own source. Arrange and resize each source in the preview. For a portrait clip on a landscape canvas, fit it if all of the portrait image matters. Use the side space deliberately—for example, with a background or companion content—instead of widening the portrait image. For landscape footage in a portrait composition, fitting may leave space above and below; use a crop or zoom only if losing the edges is acceptable.
- Crop only after choosing what can disappear. Hold Alt while dragging a source’s bounding-box edge in the preview to crop it. For precise crop values, use Edit Transform. Enlarging a source past the frame is a pan-and-scan crop, not a full-image fit.
- Use the transform shortcuts carefully. OBS provides Ctrl+F to fit a source to the preview and Ctrl+S to stretch it. Fit is useful for keeping the full image visible; do not use stretch to solve an aspect-ratio mismatch.
- Check softness at the intended output size. If a scaled image looks soft, review its source scale filtering. OBS’s aspect-ratio guidance suggests bicubic as an option for blurry sources; point or area filtering can retain a sharper, pixelated appearance for retro or pixel-art material.
When one scene is not enough: YouTube horizontal and vertical layouts
Correctly scaling sources in one OBS canvas does not create a second composition. YouTube describes simultaneous horizontal 16:9 and vertical 9:16 live formats. Its default vertical version is a center crop, which can cut off subjects placed near the sides of a horizontal frame. YouTube lists center crop, fit to phone width, and stacked as vertical layout choices.
If the audience needs distinct compositions, use YouTube’s vertical layout editor for a scheduled stream, or configure a third-party encoder for dual streaming. YouTube’s encoder approach uses RTMP(S) and a second stream key for the vertical output; send the appropriate format to each key. Set this up before going live: YouTube says the vertical format cannot be added after a stream has started. Check the current YouTube and OBS interface labels when configuring a stream, since product interfaces and availability can change.

Choose a stream bitrate your connection can sustain
Resolution and frame rate affect the recommended upload bitrate. YouTube’s encoder recommendations, accessed in 2026, include these H.264, AV1, and H.265 values:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →| Output | H.264 recommendation | AV1/H.265 recommendation |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps | 6 Mbps | 10 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps | 12 Mbps |
These are YouTube recommendations, not guaranteed outcomes or measured results. YouTube advises choosing a quality your internet connection can sustain. A higher resolution or frame rate is not useful if the upload cannot reliably carry the stream.

Preflight both the picture and the stream
Before an event, test representative movement and audio, inspect each composition at the intended output size, and check OBS performance and the YouTube preview or stream health. Where appropriate, use a private or unlisted test stream as a practical preflight; that is a workflow suggestion, not a platform requirement. For a dual-format stream, verify both outputs and ensure the vertical layout preserves the subjects and text viewers need to see.
Troubleshoot common scaling problems
- The portrait clip looks wide or the landscape clip looks tall: It has likely been stretched. Fit it to the canvas or restore its proportions, then use intentional crop or background space to complete the layout.
- Part of a subject or text disappears: The source is cropped, zoomed, or center-cropped for vertical output. Reduce the zoom, reposition the source, choose a different vertical layout, or build a separate composition.
- There are blank bars or empty areas: The source is fitted while its aspect ratio differs from the canvas. This is expected when preserving the full image. Fill the space with a designed background or companion content, or accept edge loss from a deliberate crop.
- A source moved or changed size after a canvas adjustment: Reposition or resize it in the preview; the canvas defines the arrangement workspace, while output scaling does not perform that rearrangement.
- The image appears soft after resizing: Review the source scale filter and inspect at the actual output size. Bicubic is one option OBS suggests for blurry material; point or area may better suit pixel-art or retro visuals.
- The stream stutters or fails at the selected quality: Select a resolution, frame rate, and bitrate your upload can sustain, then test before the event. Use YouTube’s recommendations as guidance rather than a substitute for checking the actual connection and stream.
- The vertical version is missing after going live: YouTube says vertical format cannot be added once the stream has started. Configure the vertical layout or encoder output before starting the stream.
Or let it run in the cloud
For uploaded, pre-recorded videos that should loop on YouTube around the clock, StreamNeo is a different option from building an OBS scene for a live camera or mixing clips for an event.
