Outdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down

Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallFor a long prerecorded YouTube stream, set OBS to use YouTube’s recommended RTMPS connection, constant bitrate (CBR), and a 2-second keyframe interval; choose a bitrate for your resolution and frame rate that your connection can sustain. Test the entire playback path before going public, leave upload headroom, and record locally. One important limit: YouTube says a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured as a replay.
Choose settings that match your video and connection
YouTube’s live-encoder guidance—not its separate video-upload recommendations—is the right reference for your livestream bitrate. Its recommendations vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate. For H.264, YouTube recommends 5 Mbps at 1080p30 and 8 Mbps at 720p60; the listed minimum for 720p60 is 3 Mbps. At 1080p60, the listed minimum is 6 Mbps and the recommended bitrate is 17 Mbps. These are YouTube ingestion recommendations, not guarantees of picture quality or uninterrupted streaming. See YouTube’s live encoder settings for the full table.
| Target (H.264) | YouTube bitrate guidance | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p30 | 5 Mbps recommended | A practical target if the source is 30 fps and your sustained upload capacity has headroom. |
| 720p60 | 3 Mbps minimum; 8 Mbps recommended | Use the recommended figure only if your network can sustain it reliably. |
| 1080p60 | 6 Mbps minimum; 17 Mbps recommended | This target needs substantially more upload capacity than 1080p30. |
Those figures are examples from YouTube’s H.264 livestream table. If you select HEVC (H.265) or AV1, consult the matching codec row rather than reusing H.264 figures. YouTube supports H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS ingestion, with frame rates up to 60 fps. OBS’s available encoder choices depend on your installed version and hardware; use a compatible encoder and test it on the machine that will run the session.
Set the core encoder values
- Protocol: RTMPS is YouTube’s recommended secure ingestion protocol.
- Rate control: CBR (constant bitrate).
- Keyframe interval: 2 seconds recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds.
- Bitrate: Choose the value for your target codec, resolution, and frame rate from YouTube’s live-encoder guidance, then confirm your connection can sustain it.
OBS labels and encoder options can differ by version and hardware, so treat these as target values rather than a universal OBS preset. YouTube says it detects encoder settings and transcodes the stream for different viewer devices.

Set up YouTube Studio and OBS
- Check livestream eligibility. YouTube says the channel must be verified and must not have had a livestreaming restriction in the past 90 days. Review YouTube’s livestreaming tips if streaming is unavailable.
- Create or schedule the event in YouTube Studio. Use YouTube’s encoder setup guidance at Set up a live stream with an encoder. Studio provides the server URL and stream key for the event.
- Enter the connection details in OBS. Open OBS settings and use the Stream section to select YouTube or the compatible RTMPS/custom-server option available in your version. Enter the server URL and stream key from Studio. Do not share the key: YouTube describes it as password-like, and you can reset it if it is exposed. See YouTube’s stream settings guidance.
- Set video and output targets. In OBS, configure the output resolution and frame rate to match the content you intend to send, then set the encoder, CBR, keyframe interval, and bitrate to the compatible values above. Avoid increasing resolution or frame rate beyond what the prerecorded source and machine can handle reliably.
- Build the prerecorded playback scene. Add the video playback source you intend to use in OBS, configure its playback or repeat behavior for your planned session, and confirm that both picture and audio reach the preview. The exact source controls depend on the source type and OBS version; do not assume a loop option is available on every source.
- Start a private or unlisted test before the public session. YouTube recommends testing with audio and movement similar to the planned content. Check the Live Control Room preview and stream health before making the event public.
Prepare the connection for a long session
YouTube recommends approximately 20% upload-bandwidth headroom beyond the stream’s outgoing bitrate. If you use primary and backup feeds, account for both. Test under conditions like the ones expected during the real stream: a shared home or office connection may have less usable outbound capacity than its advertised headline speed. Details are in YouTube’s streaming tips.
- Check OBS for dropped frames and encoding warnings while the test is running.
- Watch YouTube’s stream-health indicators and listen to the preview for missing, distorted, or unexpectedly quiet audio.
- Confirm the intended video, transitions, audio, and repeat behavior work through a full representative test segment.
- If you are recording locally, confirm the recording file is growing and can be opened. A local recording can be important if the YouTube replay is incomplete or unavailable.
A computer and connection running for hours are operational dependencies, not something an encoder preset can guarantee. Monitor the system during the session and stop OBS after ending the YouTube event.

Plan for the 12-hour replay risk
YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but warns: “If your stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all.” That makes a local recording especially important if you need a complete replay of a long session. YouTube recommends keeping a local archive as a backup; confirm the recording is progressing and that you have enough storage for the duration and recording format. Read YouTube’s archive live streams guidance.
Copyright, policy, and monetization still apply
Prerecorded material is still livestream content for rights and policy purposes. YouTube’s livestream terms require compliance with Community Guidelines and say the provider must have the necessary worldwide exploitation rights, including music licensing rights. Review YouTube’s livestream terms and make sure you have permission for every video, audio track, and other included material.

YouTube provides monetization controls for eligible channels, but that does not establish that a specific channel or repetitive 24/7 format will qualify. Do not assume a loop is automatically approved, prohibited, or monetizable; check the rules and your channel’s Studio status.
Common problems and fixes
- OBS connects, but YouTube reports poor stream health: Lower the bitrate or target format to one your connection can sustain, then test again with the recommended upload headroom.
- Stream drops or frames are missed: Check OBS’s dropped-frame and encoding indicators, then check YouTube stream health. A network that cannot sustain the outgoing bitrate or an overloaded encoder can undermine a long session; reduce the target or address the bottleneck before restarting.
- No preview or the event does not receive video: Recheck that OBS is using the server URL and stream key for the correct Studio event, and confirm the intended scene and playback source are active.
- Audio is absent, clipped, or out of sync: Verify the source’s audio reaches the OBS meters and the Live Control Room preview. Test the same content and transitions you plan to use before going public.
- The video stops instead of repeating: Check the playback controls for the source type you selected and test the end-of-file behavior. Do not rely on a long public session until the repeat behavior has been confirmed.
- The replay is missing or incomplete: For sessions longer than 12 hours, YouTube says capture may not happen at all. Use a verified local recording when a complete archive matters.
- The stream key may have been exposed: Reset it in YouTube Studio’s stream settings, then update OBS with the replacement key.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is to keep uploaded prerecorded videos playing on YouTube without leaving OBS, a computer, or a home connection running, StreamNeo runs the loop from the cloud. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It plays uploaded videos to YouTube; it does not stream from a camera.
