For a Punjabi Gurbani playlist with a static or slowly changing visual, start with OBS at 720p, 30 fps, H.264, CBR, a 2-second keyframe interval, and RTMPS. YouTube recommends 8 Mbps for H.264 video at 720p30. If your sustained upload capacity and encoder can handle more, 1080p30 is a reasonable upgrade; YouTube recommends 14 Mbps for H.264 at that setting. Treat these as platform recommendations, not a guarantee that your connection or computer can sustain them.
Recommended OBS settings for a Gurbani playlist
An audio-led stream usually gains little from 60 fps when the visual is album art, text, or a slow animation. A stable 30 fps stream with legible artwork and clean audio is a practical starting point. Choose the output resolution according to the artwork or text you need viewers to read, and the upload and encoding capacity you can sustain.
| Output | YouTube H.264 video bitrate recommendation | When it makes sense |
|---|---|---|
| 720p30 | 8 Mbps | Conservative starting point for static or slow visuals, particularly when upload capacity is limited. |
| 1080p30 | 14 Mbps | Use when higher-resolution artwork or text matters and upload and encoding are reliable. |
| 720p60 | 8 Mbps | Consider only if the visual has motion that benefits from 60 fps. |
| 1080p60 | 17 Mbps | Use only when motion benefits from 60 fps and both the computer and network can sustain it. |
These are YouTube’s H.264 recommendations. YouTube’s bitrate table gives different values for H.265/HEVC and AV1, so do not apply the H.264 figures to another codec. Use an encoder and ingestion configuration supported by your OBS setup and test alternatives before relying on them. See YouTube’s encoder settings guidance.
- Rate control: CBR.
- Keyframe interval: 2 seconds; YouTube says not to exceed 4 seconds.
- Video codec: H.264 is a broadly compatible starting choice.
- Ingestion: RTMPS if offered for the YouTube service integration, or use the server URL provided in YouTube Live Control Room.
- Stereo audio: 44.1 kHz sample rate and 128 kbps are YouTube’s listed guidance.
- Frame rate: 30 fps for static or slow visuals; reserve 60 fps for motion that benefits from it and systems that can support it.
Choose resolution and bitrate from real upload capacity
YouTube recommends keeping 20% room above the full stream bitrate and using a reliable network. The video bitrate is not the whole stream: audio and other stream overhead also consume capacity. Measure sustained upload under conditions similar to the actual broadcast, including other household or venue traffic; the internet plan’s headline speed is not necessarily what the streaming computer has available.

If your connection fluctuates or does not leave adequate headroom, reduce resolution or bitrate before going live. Repeated dropped frames are not fixed by selecting a larger bitrate. A wired connection may help avoid local Wi-Fi variability, but it cannot increase the upstream capacity provided by your internet service or guarantee stability. See YouTube’s encoder guidance and YouTube’s network recommendations.
Set up the YouTube stream and OBS
- In YouTube Studio, open Go Live and create or schedule an encoder stream.
- In the Live Control Room, copy the server URL and stream key. In OBS, open Settings > Stream, select YouTube/YouTube RTMPS if available, or enter the server URL and key using the service’s custom configuration fields. Treat the key as a password: do not share it, and reset it if it is exposed. YouTube explains that the key identifies where the encoder sends the feed and lets YouTube accept it; see YouTube’s stream setup instructions.
- In OBS, set the output resolution and frame rate to your chosen profile. In the output or streaming encoder settings, choose H.264, CBR, the bitrate matching that output, and a 2-second keyframe interval.
- Set stereo audio to 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps as a platform starting point. In OBS, confirm the intended playlist playback is captured by the correct desktop or application audio source. Keep the playback chain configured consistently, watch the audio meters, and avoid clipping.
- Start the OBS stream and check the Live Control Room preview before promoting or depending on the broadcast. Test ahead of time with audio and movement similar to the real stream; monitor stream health and audio/video quality during the broadcast.
Check recording rights before broadcasting Gurbani music
A devotional purpose or a Gurbani text does not automatically make a commercial recording free to rebroadcast. Rights can differ between the underlying composition and a particular sound recording. Confirm that you have permission for the exact recording, territories, live-stream use, and any archived replay. YouTube’s livestream terms place responsibility on the provider to have necessary rights, including music licensing rights from artists, record labels, publishers, and other royalty participants.

YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. If it identifies a match, it may replace the stream with a placeholder and warn the streamer; if the content remains, the broadcast can be interrupted or terminated. YouTube notes that even a licensed channel may need the rights owner to add it to a Content ID allowlist to avoid interruption. An archived live stream can also receive a Content ID claim after the broadcast. See YouTube’s live-stream copyright guidance.
- Keep written permission or license records for the specific recording and each intended use.
- Ask the rights holder whether the YouTube channel needs Content ID allowlisting.
- Do not treat attribution, a “free” label, or purchase of a track as proof of live and archive rights; check the license terms for that recording.
Troubleshoot before and during the stream
| Symptom | Likely issue | What to check or change |
|---|---|---|
| Dropped frames or an unstable stream | Upload capacity is insufficient or fluctuating, or competing traffic is using the connection. | Check sustained upload in realistic conditions, leave YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom above the full stream bitrate, and lower the output resolution or bitrate if needed. |
| YouTube does not receive the encoder feed | The selected server URL or stream key may not match the encoder stream. | Compare OBS’s stream settings with the current values in the Live Control Room. Keep the key private and reset it if compromised. |
| Preview has no playlist audio | OBS may be capturing the wrong desktop or application source, or the playback route may differ from the one being monitored. | Check the OBS audio meters while the playlist plays, select the intended capture source, and listen to a test stream. |
| Audio sounds distorted | The signal may be clipping somewhere in the playback or capture chain. | Watch OBS meters, reduce levels that peak into clipping, and listen to a test before the live broadcast. |
| Live stream is interrupted or replaced | A third-party content match can trigger a warning, placeholder, interruption, or termination. | Verify rights for the exact recording and intended uses, and ask the rights holder about allowlisting the channel. |
