For a 24/7 YouTube stream over BSNL, start with OBS using H.264, CBR, and a two-second keyframe interval, then set the bitrate only as high as your connection can sustain at the streaming computer’s location. Do not use your plan’s advertised download speed as a guide to upload capacity. Run a realistic test stream and check OBS dropped frames, YouTube stream health, and your BSNL circle’s current fair-usage policy (FUP) before relying on continuous operation.

Recommended OBS and YouTube settings

YouTube accepts RTMP and RTMPS; it recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport. Its encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 video, but H.264 with CBR is a conservative choice for broad compatibility. Set the keyframe interval to two seconds; YouTube says not to exceed four seconds. YouTube lists AAC or MP3 audio and recommends stereo AAC at 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps for stereo audio. See YouTube’s encoder settings guidance.

Output format YouTube H.264 bitrate minimum YouTube H.264 bitrate recommendation
480p30 0.4 Mbps 4 Mbps
720p30 3 Mbps 8 Mbps
720p60 3 Mbps 8 Mbps
1080p30 5 Mbps 14 Mbps
1080p60 6 Mbps 17 Mbps

These are YouTube’s published H.264 guidance figures, not estimates of what a particular BSNL connection can sustain. A 60 fps output can preserve more motion detail; for static or slow-moving programming, 30 fps may be adequate and permits a lower bitrate target. Choose a resolution, frame rate, and bitrate together, based on tested upload headroom and the data allowance on your plan.

Set the bitrate for the connection you actually have

Test upload speed from the computer and location where OBS will run, preferably at several times of day. A single speed test is a snapshot, not proof of a stable all-day rate. OBS says dropped frames can mean the connection to the remote server is unstable or cannot keep up with the configured bitrate. Its troubleshooting guidance suggests 75% of total upload speed as a starting point, not a guarantee. For a long stream, leave room for normal variation and other household traffic rather than setting OBS at that ceiling. See OBS stream connection troubleshooting.

If you cannot sustain YouTube’s recommended rate, try a lower resolution or frame rate and test at a lower bitrate. The bitrate table’s minimums are platform guidance, not a promise that a stream below the recommended rate will look suitable for your content. Use a private or unlisted preflight, with movement and audio similar to the planned stream. YouTube specifically advises testing with representative movement and audio, then monitoring stream health and reviewing messages during the event.

Check your BSNL circle, plan, and FUP

BSNL plans and terms vary by circle and plan. The available Chennai Circle plan sheet, marked updated 2025-10-01, lists these examples; they should not be treated as nationwide or necessarily current terms. Confirm the current plan details for your own connection with BSNL.

Chennai Circle plan example Listed speed Listed FUP Listed speed after FUP
Fibre Basic 60 Mbps Up to 3,300 GB 4 Mbps
Fibre Basic Plus 100 Mbps Up to 4,000 GB 4 Mbps
Fibre Value Plus 150 Mbps Up to 5,000 GB 10 Mbps

Continuous streaming can use substantial data. Video payload alone at a steady 1 Mbps is approximately 10.8 decimal GB per 24 hours (1 megabit per second × 86,400 seconds ÷ 8 ÷ 1,000); at 5 Mbps, it is about 54 GB per day. These are unit calculations, before protocol overhead or additional audio, not figures published by BSNL. Compare projected usage with your current FUP and confirm what happens once it is reached.

Preflight checklist for a 24/7 stream

  1. Measure sustained upload where the streaming computer will operate, and repeat the test at different times. Do not infer upload capacity from advertised download speed.
  2. Choose a conservative resolution, frame rate, and bitrate that leave headroom below the stable upload rate.
  3. Configure H.264, CBR, and a two-second keyframe interval; use a YouTube-supported audio encoder and suitable audio settings.
  4. Run a private or unlisted stream with representative motion and audio. Watch OBS statistics for dropped frames and YouTube’s stream-health indicators and messages.
  5. If the connection is unstable or frames drop, reduce the bitrate and test again. Change one setting at a time so you can tell what helped.
  6. Check the current BSNL plan, circle-specific FUP, and post-FUP speed before estimating whether continuous streaming is practical.

Troubleshoot dropped frames and interruptions

OBS reports dropped frames or YouTube stream health is poor

Reduce the video bitrate to a rate the connection can sustain reliably, then repeat the preflight. OBS identifies an unstable connection to the remote server or a bitrate beyond available capacity as possible explanations. If the problem continues, OBS suggests trying another server and checking whether network software is deprioritizing OBS. Its troubleshooting page also discusses IPv4/IPv6 configuration. Change one variable at a time and restore defaults if the change does not help.

The stream works initially but fails after extended operation

Check whether the connection has reached its plan’s FUP and whether the post-FUP speed can sustain your chosen bitrate. Also account for local contingencies such as Wi-Fi problems, router or computer restarts, power interruptions, encoder overload, or a platform-side interruption. The available sources do not establish a BSNL-wide uptime guarantee or a universal upload speed, so test your own line and plan for interruptions rather than assuming a 24/7 label ensures uninterrupted availability.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you want a YouTube channel to keep looping uploaded videos without leaving a computer or home connection on, StreamNeo runs the stream in the cloud. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It streams uploaded videos to YouTube, not a live camera feed.

  • Nothing has to stay on at home; StreamNeo keeps the stream running from the cloud.
  • Videos stream as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot regardless of quality; there are no quality tiers.
  • Automatic recovery is included if YouTube drops the stream.
  • The first day is free with no card, once per account.

The monthly option is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo plans and pricing, or start your free first day.
