For a 24/7 YouTube stream of nature footage with ambient audio, use YouTube’s recommended settings for your chosen codec, resolution, and frame rate: set rate control to CBR, use a 2-second keyframe interval (never more than 4 seconds), and use RTMPS when supported. For H.264, YouTube recommends 10 Mbps at 1080p30 or 17 Mbps at 1080p60. These are ingest recommendations, not guarantees that your computer or connection can sustain a continuous stream. Test the actual footage and audio, leave upload headroom, monitor stream health, and record locally if you need a dependable replay.
Choose resolution, frame rate, and codec first
Set OBS to the format you actually want to send to YouTube before selecting a bitrate. Higher resolution and frame rate can improve detail and motion, but they also increase encoding and network demands. YouTube supports H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS ingest, and supports up to 60 fps. Use a codec your encoder and YouTube ingest setup support; consult YouTube’s current codec-specific bitrate table rather than carrying a bitrate over from a different format.

The bitrate figures are YouTube recommendations for H.264 ingest, not measured requirements for a particular PC, network, or video. OBS notes that 60 fps can tax a system more than 30 fps. For mostly static scenery, 30 fps may be a practical starting point; test a representative clip with moving water, leaves, rain, or other motion before leaving the stream unattended.
Set the OBS output and audio
- In OBS, open Settings and select Video. Set the output resolution to the resolution you intend YouTube viewers to receive, then set the frame rate to 30 or 60 fps as appropriate. Confirm that the machine can sustain the choice during representative playback and encoding.
- Open Settings > Output, select the streaming output controls, and choose an encoder available on your system that matches your intended codec. Set rate control to CBR and enter the bitrate recommended by YouTube for that codec, resolution, and frame rate. OBS labels can differ between versions and encoder types, so verify the resulting stream in YouTube’s stream health view.
- Set Keyframe Interval to 2 seconds. YouTube recommends two seconds and says not to exceed four seconds.
- Use RTMPS as the server protocol where supported. In YouTube’s live control room, create or select the stream and copy its stream key into OBS’s stream settings. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it or include it in a recording or screenshot. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube before streaming again.
- For RTMP/RTMPS audio, use stereo AAC or MP3 as appropriate for your setup. YouTube’s advanced guidance lists stereo at 44.1 kHz and 128 Kbps. Check that OBS is sending the intended ambient track and that no desktop or microphone audio is unintentionally mixed in.
Check upload capacity and stream health
YouTube recommends about 20% spare upload bandwidth beyond the total streaming bitrate. For example, a 10 Mbps video stream needs roughly 12 Mbps of available upload capacity as headroom before accounting for other simultaneous traffic. The spare capacity is not a guarantee against interruptions: congestion, Wi-Fi instability, router problems, or other household uploads can still disrupt a long-running stream.

- Test with the actual video playback, audio mix, encoder, and network connection you intend to use.
- Prefer a stable wired network if available; avoid saturating the connection with backups, uploads, or other streams.
- Watch YouTube’s stream health indicators during the test for bitrate or connection warnings, and check OBS for dropped frames or encoder overload.
- If warnings appear, reduce the output demand—such as bitrate, resolution, or frame rate—and test again rather than assuming a brief successful start proves 24/7 stability.
Configure reconnect and protect the recording
OBS includes an automatic reconnect option in its advanced settings. It can help OBS reconnect after a connection loss, but it does not fix unstable internet, interrupted power, encoder overload, or a YouTube-side issue. OBS’s overview guidance advises leaving advanced defaults alone unless you have a reason to change them; test reconnect behavior before relying on it.
Do not treat YouTube’s live archive as a guaranteed full recording for a continuous 24/7 stream. YouTube says a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all, and DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable on streams longer than 12 hours. If a complete copy matters, enable local recording in OBS, ensure the destination drive has room for the intended retention period, and verify during the stream that the recording file exists and continues to grow. Required storage depends on your recording settings and how long you keep the files.

Clear rights for both the footage and ambient sound
Before going live, confirm that you have permission for every video and audio element. A license should explicitly permit live streaming and, if you want one, an archived replay or later reuse. Rights to the visual footage do not automatically cover the sound, and permission to use a track in an ordinary video may not cover live transmission or continued availability as a replay.
