For a cautious starting point, configure OBS for 720p at 30 fps, H.264, CBR, and a 2-second keyframe interval, then test the stream from the exact location and Jio 5G setup you plan to use. YouTube lists 3 Mbps as the minimum and 8 Mbps as the recommended H.264 bitrate for 720p30, but those figures describe YouTube’s ingest settings—not what your Jio connection can sustain. There is no bitrate that can be guaranteed for every Jio 5G location or plan.
Start with this OBS configuration
Use this as a test configuration, not a promise of 24/7 stability. YouTube recommends RTMPS, CBR, and a 2-second keyframe interval for encoder streams. Begin at the lower end of the bitrate range that fits your measured, sustained upload; increase only after a realistic test remains stable.

See YouTube’s live encoder settings for current format and bitrate guidance. YouTube also supports H.265/HEVC and AV1 ingestion, but whether OBS offers those encoders depends on your system and YouTube workflow. For those codecs, YouTube lists 2 Mbps minimum and 6 Mbps recommended for 720p30; use them only if you can select and test them reliably.
Measure Jio 5G upload before choosing a bitrate
A 5G indicator, good download result, or one speed test does not show that the outbound path to YouTube will remain stable. YouTube says total stream bitrate must fit available upload bandwidth, recommends leaving 20% headroom, and notes that shared connections can reduce the bandwidth available to an individual user. Measure upload at the computer’s actual streaming location, not just download. The 20% reserve is a guideline, not a guarantee of uninterrupted streaming.

- Test at the streaming location. Use the same phone hotspot or router, computer, and placement you intend to use for the broadcast. Run upload tests at different times, including the busier periods when you expect to stream.
- Choose a bitrate below reliably sustained upload. YouTube’s 20% headroom guidance is a useful minimum reserve. OBS also describes 75% of total upload speed as a useful starting point when reducing bitrate; neither percentage replaces repeated tests.
- Run an unlisted test broadcast. Use the intended scene, motion, audio, encoder, and bitrate. Check YouTube stream health and OBS’s dropped-frame indicators throughout the test, not only at startup.
- Change one thing at a time. If the test is stable, you can cautiously increase bitrate or resolution. If it is unstable, reduce bitrate first and repeat the test.
For H.264, YouTube lists 5 Mbps minimum and 14 Mbps recommended for 1080p30, and 6 Mbps minimum and 17 Mbps recommended for 1080p60. Those are platform ingest targets, not evidence that a particular Jio 5G connection can sustain them. The greater the required bitrate, the more upload margin your connection needs.
Set up OBS and connect it to YouTube
- Create or prepare the YouTube live stream. In YouTube Studio, set up the broadcast and obtain its stream key. YouTube’s live-streaming setup guide covers account and broadcast prerequisites. Availability and exact controls can depend on your account and current Studio interface.
- Connect OBS to YouTube. In OBS, open Settings → Stream, select YouTube RTMPS (or use the available YouTube account integration), and select or enter the stream key created in YouTube Studio. OBS’s community guide for this workflow was last updated in 2021, so rely on the current YouTube Studio and OBS controls if labels differ: OBS community guide to streaming to YouTube.
- Configure the encoder. Open Settings → Output → Streaming. Select an encoder supported by your computer and YouTube setup. Set rate control to CBR, the bitrate to your tested value, and the keyframe interval to 2 seconds.
- Check video and audio output. Confirm the intended resolution and frame rate, then use SDR Rec. 709, 8-bit progressive video where applicable. Set stereo audio to AAC at 44.1 kHz and 128 Kbps if those controls are available.
- Protect the stream key. Treat it like a password: do not publish it, show it on-screen, or share it. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update OBS.
- Test before going public. Start with an unlisted test, confirm the correct YouTube destination, inspect stream health and dropped frames, and only then begin the intended broadcast.
Keep the stream stable—and know what OBS cannot fix
OBS can encode and send the stream, but it cannot make a fluctuating mobile uplink consistent. If the connection is shared or changes with network load, the bandwidth available to OBS can change even when the video settings stay fixed.

- Dropped frames or YouTube stream-health errors: Lower the video bitrate and test again. OBS also recommends trying another available ingest server and checking whether a VPN or network-optimization software is interfering. Dynamic bitrate can reduce quality to adapt to changing bandwidth; it does not repair the underlying connection. See OBS connection troubleshooting.
- Download is fast but the stream struggles: Measure outbound upload at the streaming location and retest during busy periods. Download speed does not determine the encoder bitrate the connection can reliably upload.
- The stream looks worse after reducing bitrate: That is the quality trade-off for fitting a constrained uplink. Keep the lower setting if it stabilizes delivery; do not raise it again until a realistic test supports the change.
- Mobile viewers ask for a lower quality: YouTube transcodes live streams into multiple viewer formats, so creators generally do not need to send a separate low-resolution copy just for mobile viewers. Transcoding does not protect the incoming stream from upload instability. See OBS’s explanation of transcoding.
Plan around YouTube’s archive and DVR limits
A 24/7 broadcast is not the same as a guaranteed 24-hour YouTube archive. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, and warns that a stream over 12 hours may not be captured at all. For a more dependable archive, schedule sessions under 12 hours, keep a local recording backup, confirm the local file continues to grow, and verify it after each session. Check Jio plan terms separately
The Jio help page on managing video-streaming data explains how to change playback quality in apps to manage data use. It does not establish a current Jio 5G plan’s upload speed, hotspot terms, fair-use limit, or treatment of continuous encoder traffic. Check the exact terms for your plan and test the specific device and location; do not infer sustained upload performance from download claims, a “true 5G” label, or third-party results.
