For a mostly static kids’ learning playlist, start with OBS’s Auto-Configuration Wizard, then test a 720p or 1080p, 30 fps stream using YouTube’s recommended bitrate, CBR, and a two-second keyframe interval. The right settings depend on what your computer can encode and what your internet connection can sustain; no preset guarantees an uninterrupted 24/7 broadcast. Set the audience accurately as made for kids if the playlist is directed at children, and make a separate archive plan: a YouTube stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured.

Recommended starting settings

For a learning playlist with slides, demonstrations, or other modest motion, 30 fps is a sensible starting point when the source is 30 fps or lower. Choose a resolution your computer can encode and your measured upload connection can sustain. YouTube accepts up to 60 fps, but the higher frame rate can increase encoding and system load; use it when the source has motion that benefits from it and testing shows the computer can handle it.

Output H.264 bitrate recommended by YouTube AV1 or H.265 bitrate recommended by YouTube
720p30 8 Mbps 6 Mbps
720p60 8 Mbps 6 Mbps
1080p30 14 Mbps 10 Mbps
1080p60 17 Mbps 12 Mbps

These are YouTube’s encoder bitrate recommendations, not a promise that an internet connection in India—or anywhere else—can sustain them continuously. YouTube recommends CBR and a two-second keyframe interval, and says not to exceed four seconds. Encoder availability for H.264, H.265, or AV1 depends on your OBS build and hardware. Use YouTube’s live encoder settings and bitrate guidance for the current table.

Configure OBS for the playlist

1. Start with the Auto-Configuration Wizard

  1. Open OBS and use Tools > Auto-Configuration Wizard to get a starting configuration based on your hardware and network conditions.
  2. Create a scene and add the media source or sources needed for the playlist. Check that the video displays correctly and the audio meters move when sound is playing.
  3. Run a short test with representative video and audio before scheduling a long broadcast. The wizard is a starting point, not a guarantee of continuous operation. See the OBS quick start guide.

2. Connect OBS to YouTube

  1. In OBS’s streaming settings, select the streaming service and server, then enter the stream key provided by YouTube.
  2. Make sure the key in OBS matches the stream you intend to run. Treat it like a password: do not share it or show it in a recording or screenshot.
  3. Use YouTube’s production guidance to confirm the stream setup and that you have rights for the playlist’s video, music, images, and any other materials in both the live stream and any retained archive.

OBS identifies the service, server, and stream key as streaming configuration fields; YouTube’s production guide explains the matching key requirement. See OBS streaming settings and YouTube’s live production guidance.

3. Set resolution, frame rate, and encoder output

  1. In OBS’s video settings, choose a base canvas and output resolution appropriate to the source and the computer. If the playlist is mainly slides or low-motion lessons, 720p or 1080p at 30 fps is often a practical place to test.
  2. In the output settings, select an encoder supported by your OBS installation and hardware. H.264 is a broadly available choice; if using H.265 or AV1, use the matching bitrate recommendation in the table above.
  3. Set the bitrate according to the selected resolution and frame rate, then select CBR and a two-second keyframe interval. If the upload connection varies or OBS reports dropped frames, lower the output resolution or bitrate and test again.
  4. Try 60 fps only when the source’s motion warrants it and the computer can encode it reliably. YouTube accepts up to 60 fps, but that is not a requirement for educational slides or other mostly static content.

4. Test the complete stream

  1. Measure the actual upload connection you plan to use. YouTube says, “We recommend running a speed test to test your upload bitrate.” Choose a setting with room for normal variation rather than assuming a speed-test peak will remain available.
  2. Test several minutes of the actual playlist, including representative motion and audio. Check that the correct source is playing, sound is audible, and the stream is not unintentionally silent between clips.
  3. Watch OBS’s output status and YouTube’s stream health during the test. YouTube says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” Resolve dropped frames, encoding overload, or audio problems before relying on a long run. Guidance: YouTube live encoder settings and testing.

Set the audience accurately for children’s content

YouTube requires creators to designate videos as made for kids or not, regardless of location. Its audience guidance includes preschool educational content among the factors to consider. A playlist deliberately made for children is likely made for kids, but classify it according to its actual intended audience and content rather than treating the setting as an optimization choice. YouTube notes that its guidance is not legal advice. See YouTube’s made-for-kids guidance.

When a stream is designated made for kids, YouTube disables live chat, chat replay, Super Chat, comments on upcoming streams and archives, and reminder notifications. Personalized ads are also disabled, although contextual ads may be shown. Plan the broadcast without relying on chat, donations, comments, reminders, or personalized-ad revenue. Details: features restricted on made-for-kids content.

Check livestream eligibility before scheduling

YouTube’s live-stream eligibility guidance says a channel must be verified, must have had no live-stream restrictions in the previous 90 days, and the streamer must be at least 16. YouTube also warns about restrictions for streams featuring 13–15-year-olds without a visibly accompanying adult. This is a separate issue from whether the playlist is aimed at children. Check YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility requirements before planning the broadcast.

Plan for recovery and a separate archive

Reconnect helps, but is not a 24/7 guarantee

OBS includes automatic reconnect among its advanced options. It can help recover from a dropped connection, but it does not establish that the computer, internet connection, or stream will run indefinitely without supervision. Test recovery as part of your setup and plan how you will notice and respond if the stream stops. The available guidance does not establish a guaranteed 24/7 OBS configuration.

Do not rely on YouTube to archive one continuous day-long stream

YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, while a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. As YouTube puts it: “If your stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all.” A single uninterrupted 24/7 broadcast is therefore not a reliable way to preserve a complete replay. If an archive matters, arrange and verify a separate workflow, such as a local recording, and make sure you have enough storage and a plan for recording failures. YouTube recommends a local archive backup. See YouTube’s archive guidance.

Common problems and what to check

  • Stream health is poor or frames are dropped: test the upload connection again and reduce bitrate or output resolution. A recommended bitrate is not suitable if the connection cannot sustain it.
  • OBS reports encoding overload: lower the resolution or frame rate, or try an encoder the computer can handle. 60 fps can impose more load than 30 fps.
  • YouTube does not receive the stream: verify that the service, server, and stream key are correct and that the key belongs to the intended stream.
  • The video plays but there is no sound: check the media source’s audio behavior and OBS audio meters, then repeat the test with representative playlist content.
  • The live stream ends or reconnects: check OBS’s reconnect option and investigate the computer and network connection. Reconnect is a recovery aid, not a substitute for monitoring.
  • The replay is missing or incomplete: a broadcast longer than 12 hours may not be archived by YouTube. Use and verify a separate archive workflow if you need a complete copy.
  • Chat or comments are unavailable: check whether the stream is correctly designated made for kids; YouTube disables these features for that setting.

Or let it run in the cloud

If keeping a computer and home connection running is the difficult part, StreamNeo keeps a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos in the cloud. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams the uploaded video as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot regardless of quality, and it can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. The monthly option is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos rather than going live from a camera, and its stream destination is YouTube. For a child-directed channel, you are still responsible for audience designation and content rights.
