For a 24/7 ocean-waves stream, start in OBS with YouTube over RTMPS, H.264, CBR, a 2-second keyframe interval, and a bitrate matched to your resolution and upload connection. YouTube recommends 10 Mbps for 1080p30, 6 Mbps for 720p60, or 4 Mbps for 720p30. These are encoder recommendations—not a guarantee that your computer or internet connection can sustain a stream without interruption. Test the complete video and audio before going public, then monitor stream health.
Recommended OBS settings for ocean waves
In OBS, select YouTube as the streaming service and use RTMPS when available. YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists RTMP and RTMPS; it recommends RTMPS for secure delivery. Use the following as a starting point, then verify the preview and stream health in YouTube Live Control Room.

Choose a resolution, frame rate, and bitrate

For a mostly static ocean view, 30 fps may be adequate; that is a content-based starting judgment, not a YouTube requirement. Use 60 fps only if the movement benefits from it and the encoder and network remain stable. Compare the actual source resolution, visible detail, available encoding capacity, and sustainable upload rate rather than choosing a setting just because it is higher.
YouTube transcodes live video into multiple playback formats, so you generally do not need to send separate encodes for every viewer resolution. Your incoming stream still needs to be stable, and a higher output setting cannot restore detail absent from the original footage.

Set up the loop and test the complete scene
There is no single OBS loop-control recipe established here for every source type or OBS version. Configure the source so the ocean video repeats as intended in your own scene, and confirm the result by watching the transition rather than assuming the loop is seamless.
- Check the picture: Confirm the footage is present, fills the intended canvas, and repeats without an unwanted blank frame, abrupt cut, or unexpected overlay.
- Check the sound: Listen through a loop transition for gaps, clicks, clipping, silence, or audio that drifts out of sync. Make sure OBS is not also capturing an unintended microphone or desktop-audio source.
- Check the connection: Run a speed test, as YouTube recommends, and select a bitrate your upload connection can sustain. The cited guidance does not set a universal bandwidth-headroom percentage; leave practical capacity for connection variation rather than treating the recommended video bitrate as a guaranteed safe limit.
- Test privately or unlisted: Send a test using similar video motion and audio. Review the Live Control Room preview, stream-health status, and any warnings before making the stream public.
- Verify playback and any local recording: Open the channel’s watch page on a separate device, including a mobile device. If you are also recording an archive locally, confirm the file is growing and inspect its integrity.
- Arrange ongoing checks: Enable OBS automatic reconnect and plan how you will notice a computer, power, internet, audio, or YouTube interruption. Reconnect attempts are helpful, but they do not replace monitoring.
YouTube’s encoder tips recommend setting up an encoder at least two hours before a scheduled event and starting it 15 minutes beforehand. For a continuous ambient stream, the practical point is to allow enough time for a full preview and troubleshooting before relying on the public broadcast.

Protect your YouTube stream key
A stream key is a credential that lets the encoder send video to the associated YouTube stream. Do not publish it, share screenshots containing it, or include it in public support posts. If it is exposed, YouTube documents resetting the key in Live Control Room; update OBS with the replacement key before reconnecting.
What OBS settings cannot guarantee
A 24/7 label does not make the broadcast immune to interruptions. The computer, power, upload connection, source media, OBS, and YouTube can all affect continuity. Automatic reconnect can help with some dropped connections, but the settings above are not an uptime guarantee.

The available YouTube guidance cited here does not establish a maximum continuous-stream duration, how long YouTube retains an archive of a continuous broadcast, or a restart interval that preserves recordings. Do not assume an archive will be retained indefinitely or that a particular restart schedule is required. Check YouTube’s current live-stream and archive guidance for your intended setup.
Copyright and monetization for repeated ambient video
Use footage and audio you own or have permission to stream and monetize. The fact that a clip is ambient, looped, or available online does not by itself establish that you have the necessary rights. Keep license records for both the ocean footage and sound, and check the license terms for live streaming, repeated use, and monetization.

The guidance cited here does not establish whether a particular channel or repeated prerecorded stream qualifies for monetization. Review YouTube’s current copyright and monetization policies and assess your channel and content against them; do not assume that a technically valid stream is automatically eligible.
