For a basic 24/7 YouTube playlist stream, start with OBS using H.264, CBR, a 2-second keyframe interval, and YouTube’s bitrate recommendation for your chosen resolution and frame rate. Your bitrate must also fit your connection’s sustained upload capacity: YouTube recommends leaving 20% headroom. There is no single bitrate that works across India; ISP performance, location, shared network use, and time of day all matter.
Recommended OBS settings for a YouTube playlist
These are YouTube-wide recommendations for standard SDR streaming over RTMP or RTMPS, not India-specific network measurements. Use the current YouTube encoder settings and bitrates as the final reference before publishing, since platform guidance can change.
Video encoder and bitrate
- Rate control: CBR.
- Keyframe interval: 2 seconds; YouTube says not to exceed 4 seconds.
- Codec: H.264 for a straightforward, widely supported setup.
- Bitrate: Choose a value suited to the output resolution and frame rate, then verify that your upload connection can sustain it.
| Output | YouTube-recommended H.264 video bitrate |
|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps |
In OBS, open Settings → Output, select Advanced output mode if needed, and configure the streaming encoder’s rate control and bitrate. Under Settings → Video, set the output resolution and frame rate. The exact encoder labels available can vary with OBS version and hardware. YouTube transcodes incoming live streams for playback formats, so you do not need to encode separate viewer resolutions yourself.
Audio and color
- Audio codec: AAC or MP3 for RTMP/RTMPS.
- Stereo audio bitrate: 128 Kbps.
- Sample rate: 44.1 kHz stereo.
- SDR color: Rec. 709, 8-bit.
Keep the workflow in SDR unless you have a specific HDR production path. YouTube HDR uses a distinct HLS workflow and is outside this ordinary playlist setup.

Choose a bitrate your India connection can sustain
The encoder’s video bitrate is not the only network demand: audio and other traffic also use bandwidth. YouTube recommends that the stream’s total bitrate fit within available upload bandwidth and that you leave 20% headroom. Run an upload speed test on the actual connection you will stream from, and account for other devices or users sharing it.
For example, the 10 Mbps video recommendation for 1080p30 is not a promise that a connection measuring 10 Mbps upload is sufficient: total stream bitrate and headroom still matter. A speed test is a snapshot, not proof that capacity will remain stable overnight. In India, performance can vary by ISP, area, time of day, and network load. Prefer a reliable wired connection where available and choose a setting that works under ordinary, not just ideal, conditions.

720p or 1080p, 30 or 60 fps?
Use the highest combination your system and connection can maintain reliably, not simply the largest available bitrate. If the playlist has relatively little motion, 30 fps and a lower bitrate may be a sensible starting point, but treat that as a practical hypothesis and test it with the actual material. If 1080p60 at 17 Mbps is unstable, step down to a lower resolution or frame rate and retest rather than accepting sustained dropped frames.
Set up and test the playlist before leaving it unattended
- Enable YouTube live streaming early. First-time live streaming enablement may take up to 24 hours. Confirm that the channel is enabled before the planned start. See YouTube’s live streaming setup guidance.
- Prepare the YouTube live event and stream key. In YouTube Studio, create or select the live stream and obtain its stream key. In OBS, open Settings → Stream, choose YouTube as the service, and connect the account or enter the stream key as appropriate. Treat the key like a password: anyone who has it may be able to send video to the channel.
- Build the playlist in OBS. Add the video files as media sources in a scene, enable looping for the source or use a playlist workflow that repeats the intended files, and verify transitions and audio levels. OBS workflows can differ depending on whether you use individual Media Sources or a playlist-capable source/plugin.
- Set the output and network settings. Apply the H.264, CBR, keyframe, bitrate, audio, and SDR settings above. Select RTMPS when available for encrypted transport. Use the chosen output resolution and frame rate consistently with the bitrate table.
- Run a representative test. Use the same type of audio and video movement as the real playlist. Start the encoder, inspect the Live Control Room preview, check stream health and messages, and verify that viewers can access the event.
- Check local recording and monitoring. If you are recording locally, verify the file opens and that its size continues to grow during the test. Assign someone or a monitoring method to notice encoder stoppage, network failure, playback errors, or low disk space before relying on an unattended run.
YouTube advises setting up ahead of time and checking the local archive file. A UPS is an optional reliability measure that may help through a brief power interruption affecting the computer or router; it is not an official YouTube or OBS requirement, nor is it established here as a tested solution.

Plan for the 12-hour archive and DVR limits
A 24-hour broadcast is not necessarily preserved as one complete YouTube replay. YouTube warns that if a stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all. DVR rewind may also be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. If replay or rewind matters, plan to end and restart sessions before they pass 12 hours and make a local recording as a backup. Do not assume YouTube will retain a complete 24-hour VOD.
Local recording needs disk space based on the recording bitrate and duration. Estimate storage from the settings and planned recording time you actually use; there is no universal drive-capacity figure without those values.

Copyright and live playlist permissions
Only include material you have the rights to use in a live broadcast. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content; detected material can cause a placeholder to replace the stream, a temporary interruption, or termination if it remains. YouTube’s Terms of Service require the provider to have the necessary rights for exploitation on Google services worldwide, including music licensing rights.
Being able to play a video on YouTube, owning a copy of a song, or having permission to upload a recording does not by itself establish permission for continuous live rebroadcast. For licensed third-party content, YouTube’s copyright guidance for live streams says to ask the owner to add your channel to their Content ID allowlist.

Troubleshoot common failures
Dropped frames keep increasing
OBS says dropped frames occur when the connection to the remote ingest server is unstable or cannot keep up with the selected bitrate. Reduce the bitrate or output demand, test the connection at the time you plan to stream, and try another ingest server if available. Check whether a VPN, firewall or security software, or bundled network software is interfering. OBS’s stream connection troubleshooting guide is dated 2024-09-30.
OBS offers dynamic bitrate adjustment, which can lower bitrate during congestion and may reduce frame drops. The trade-off is lower quality; it does not fix the underlying connection. Some advanced network controls are Windows-only.
Stream does not start or the preview is blank
- Confirm YouTube live streaming is enabled for the channel; a first-time enablement can take up to 24 hours.
- Check that OBS is connected to the intended YouTube service and that the stream key is current and entered correctly.
- Confirm the playlist source points to available files and that the selected scene is the one being sent.
- Read the Live Control Room preview and health messages for the specific reported issue before changing multiple settings at once.
Audio is missing, distorted, or out of sync
- Check that the media source’s audio is not muted and that OBS meters move during playback.
- Use a supported AAC or MP3 configuration, stereo at 44.1 kHz, and the recommended 128 Kbps audio bitrate.
- Test the actual playlist clips: an audio track may be absent, unusually quiet, or encoded differently from another clip.
The stream ends or the recording is incomplete
Investigate encoder stoppage, power loss, connectivity, file playback errors, and available storage. If replay matters, local recording and session breaks before the 12-hour threshold reduce dependence on YouTube’s automatic archive and DVR behavior.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you would rather not keep OBS, a computer, and a home connection running, StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos.
