If OBS stays on “Connecting” when you start a YouTube stream, the status alone does not identify the cause. First check YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room for a health message, then check OBS’s connection and performance indicators. Those clues help separate a channel or stream-key problem from an ingest/network problem or an overloaded encoder.

Start with the evidence, not a random setting change

Before changing anything, note the exact message and time shown in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Also check OBS for dropped frames and rendering or encoding lag. YouTube’s dashboard checks the incoming feed and reports errors; red errors are critical and may prevent a stream from starting, while yellow warnings can affect the event. See YouTube’s live streaming error messages.

  • If YouTube reports an eligibility, stream-key, format, or daily-limit error, start with the channel and stream setup.
  • If OBS’s dropped-frame count rises, investigate the connection to the ingest server and whether the configured bitrate is sustainable.
  • If rendering or encoding lag appears without a corresponding connection issue, investigate computer load separately.
  • If YouTube is receiving a feed but its audio or video is poor, that is different from YouTube receiving no feed at all.

“Connecting” is a symptom, not a diagnosis. Official OBS and YouTube guidance does not identify it as a single condition with one universal fix.

Check channel eligibility, destination, and stream key

Confirm the channel can go live

YouTube says a channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. If you have only just enabled live streaming, activation may still be pending; changing OBS settings will not bypass YouTube’s channel enablement process. See YouTube live streaming tips.

Verify the service and current key in OBS

  1. Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room for the intended stream.
  2. Copy the current stream key from the stream settings. YouTube describes stream keys as the stream’s “password and address.”
  3. In OBS, open Settings > Stream. Confirm the service and server/destination are for the intended YouTube stream, then enter the current key using the method configured for that service.
  4. If the key was reset or replaced in YouTube, update OBS with the new one and retry.

Keep the key secret. Do not include it in screenshots, public logs, forum posts, or support messages. YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guidance specifically recommends retrieving the key from Live Control Room and pasting it into a third-party encoder when resolving startup errors.

Review settings for a continuous broadcast

In the event’s YouTube settings, check Auto-start and Auto-stop against the way you intend to start and stop a 24/7 broadcast. These settings affect broadcast workflow; the available guidance does not establish either as a universal cause of OBS remaining on “Connecting.” For details, see Manage live stream settings.

Diagnose connection trouble separately from encoder load

If OBS shows dropped frames

OBS explains: “Dropped frames means that your connection to remote server isn’t stable or you can’t keep up with your set bitrate.” The relevant path includes your computer, local network, internet connection, and YouTube ingest—not just the OBS setting. Follow the reversible checks in the OBS stream connection troubleshooting guide.

  1. Try a different server or ingest option. If OBS exposes a server choice for the selected service, test another available option and compare the result.
  2. Temporarily reduce video bitrate. If dropped frames stop, the configured bitrate or available path capacity may be involved. This is a diagnostic test, not proof of a specific fault.
  3. Check network software. Temporarily test without a VPN or network “optimization” utility, and check whether security software is interfering. Restore protections after testing and use appropriate exclusions rather than leaving security disabled.
  4. Check the network interface binding. In OBS’s advanced network settings, leave Bind to IP at Default first. OBS suggests IPv4-only as a test when dual-stack connectivity may be the issue; if it does not help, return to the default IPv4/IPv6 setting.
  5. Test a wired connection. OBS recommends Ethernet because Wi-Fi can be unstable for streaming. If the connection changes when wired, investigate Wi-Fi or the local network before replacing equipment.

OBS’s troubleshooting guide gives 75% of total upload speed as an initial bitrate heuristic. It is not a YouTube requirement or a guarantee: available upload speed fluctuates, and the route to the ingest server matters. YouTube also recommends testing upload capacity and choosing a bitrate for the codec, resolution, and frame rate in its encoder settings guidance.

OBS lists possible hardware and network causes including a modem or router, cable, network card, switch, extender, or outdated network driver. Test one component at a time. If you are unsure whether equipment needs replacing, OBS advises contacting your ISP rather than buying parts speculatively.

If rendering or encoding lag appears

Rendering or encoding overload is a separate problem from dropped frames. If OBS reports lag in this area, check GPU load and close other GPU-heavy applications. On Windows, OBS recommends trying Run as administrator. You can also simplify scenes or reduce output resolution or frame rate. The OBS encoding performance troubleshooting guide covers this path.

Check YouTube’s encoder requirements and test settings

Use YouTube’s requirements as a compatibility check, not as a reason to copy one bitrate into every stream. Its current encoder guidance covers RTMP/RTMPS, video codecs H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1, CBR bitrate encoding, up to 60 fps, and AAC or MP3 audio. Supported modes and bitrate ranges vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate.

  • Keyframes: YouTube recommends a 2-second interval and says not to exceed 4 seconds.
  • Example only: In YouTube’s current table, H.264 at 1080p60 has a 6 Mbps minimum and 12 Mbps recommended bitrate. That value is not a universal target for other codecs or modes.
  • Format errors: If Live Control Room reports an incorrect stream format, follow that specific message. YouTube’s error reference specifies H.264 video and AAC audio for the listed incorrect-format error.
  • Representative test: Test with audio and motion similar to the real broadcast, then monitor stream health. YouTube says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.”

For a 24/7 feed, a brief test with a static image may not reveal problems that appear during the actual video or audio content. Use the stream’s intended output settings and representative material when checking stability.

Use a low-risk troubleshooting sequence

  1. Record the exact YouTube health message and timestamp, plus OBS’s dropped-frame and rendering/encoding-lag indicators.
  2. Resolve any channel eligibility, key, destination, daily-limit, or format error reported by YouTube.
  3. If OBS shows dropped frames, test a different ingest option, reduce bitrate temporarily, check network software, and try wired networking.
  4. If OBS shows rendering or encoding lag, reduce computer load or simplify output rather than treating it as an internet fault.
  5. After each change, start another representative test and compare the same indicators. Change one thing at a time so the result is useful.

When the connection still will not start

Collect the details that distinguish a channel, network, and performance issue before contacting support:

  • OBS version and operating system
  • The exact YouTube Live Control Room message and its timestamp
  • Whether OBS reports dropped frames, rendering lag, or encoding lag
  • The selected destination/server, but never the stream key
  • An upload-speed result and whether a wired or alternate-network test changed the behavior
  • Whether a VPN or security/network utility is active

If internet testing points to a connection problem, YouTube and OBS both direct users toward their ISP. YouTube also provides a support path for ongoing live-stream issues in its troubleshooting guidance.

Or let it run in the cloud
