Which OBS source fits your channel?
OBS has two sources that can be confused: Media Source plays an individual media file, while VLC Video Source can play a playlist of files. The right choice depends on whether you need to repeat one video or cycle through multiple videos. OBS documents their playback behavior, but does not establish that either source is more reliable for extended broadcasting. OBS Media Sources documentation.

Set up a repeating playlist in OBS
- Check channel eligibility first. YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. Its guidance identifies encoder software as one way to stream. See Get started with live streaming and Avoid restrictions on YouTube live streaming.
- Install VLC and match architectures. Install VLC before adding the source. Use 64-bit VLC with 64-bit OBS.
- Prepare and check the media files. Open each file locally and confirm that it plays as intended, including its audio and subtitles. Decide the desired playlist order before starting the stream.
- Add the source. In OBS, add a VLC Video Source and add the files to its playlist. The OBS documentation calls the playlist controls Loop Playlist and Shuffle Playlist.
- Choose sequence or shuffle. Leave Shuffle Playlist off to play in the listed order; turn it on if you want shuffled playback. Confirm Loop Playlist is on so playback returns to the start of the list when it ends.
- Review source properties. Check playlist contents and order, audio track, subtitles, network caching, and visibility behavior. OBS documents a 400 ms default for network caching. VLC Video Source’s default visibility behavior is to stop when the source is not visible and restart when it becomes visible; check that against your scene setup.
- Connect OBS to YouTube and verify playback. Configure the broadcast in YouTube and use its stream key in OBS. Keep the key private. Before relying on the setup, confirm that the intended scene is active and that video and audio play as expected.
Use Media Source when one file is enough
If the channel will repeat a single video, add an OBS Media Source and enable its Loop property. The documented default is off, so check it rather than assuming the video will repeat. If you need to cycle through multiple files, use VLC Video Source instead of treating a single Media Source as a playlist.
Kids’ channel settings and YouTube restrictions
If the audience is children and the content is designated made for kids, expect important YouTube features to be unavailable or limited. YouTube says live chat, chat replay, and Super Chat are disabled; comments on live archives and upcoming streams and reminder notifications are also disabled. Personalized ads are disabled, though contextual ads may appear. Details are in YouTube’s live-streaming policy guidance.

The YouTube Live Streaming API has a selfDeclaredMadeForKids field for the owner’s designation and a read-only madeForKids value indicating the designation. Those fields do not decide whether a particular channel legally or factually qualifies as made for kids; creators must make that determination for their channel and content. See the LiveBroadcasts API reference. Live content remains subject to YouTube’s Community Guidelines and Terms of Service.
What looping does—and does not—keep online
Looping controls what happens when media playback reaches the end of a file or playlist. It does not, by itself, prevent an OBS, computer, internet connection, encoder, or YouTube interruption. OBS’s source documentation does not provide comparative 24/7 uptime or recovery testing for Media Source and VLC Video Source. Do not treat a looping setting as an uptime guarantee.

Troubleshooting the common setup problems
- VLC Video Source is unavailable or does not load: confirm VLC is installed and that its architecture matches OBS; 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.
- The playlist stops after one pass: open the source properties and check Loop Playlist.
- The same order plays every time: that is the documented default because Shuffle Playlist is off. Enable it only if shuffled playback is desired.
- A source stops when you change scenes: review the VLC source’s visibility behavior. Its documented default is to stop when not visible and restart when visible; verify the behavior in the scene arrangement you actually use.
- A single video ends instead of repeating: check that Media Source’s Loop property is enabled.
- YouTube will not allow the channel to go live: check that the channel is verified and has no live-streaming restriction from the prior 90 days.
