In VLC Video Source properties, confirm every intended video is listed, then set Loop Playlist and Shuffle Playlist to match the playback you want. Looping repeats only the items actually in the playlist; it cannot add missing files.
1. Confirm you are using a playlist-capable source
OBS has separate source types for individual media and playlists. Media Source is configured around one local file. If that is the source you added, repeatedly seeing the same video is expected: changing a loop option there will not turn it into a folder playlist.
For multiple media items, add or edit a VLC Video Source. OBS requires VLC to be installed for this source type to appear. If you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC as well.
2. Check which files are actually in the playlist
- Open the VLC Video Source properties.
- Inspect the playlist shown in the source.
- Confirm that each video you want to play appears as its own entry. Add any missing media files as separate items.
- If you see a playlist document such as an
.xspffile rather than the intended video entries, check that the source contains the media items you expect, not just a playlist document being repeated.
A folder on disk is not proof that all its contents are represented as separate playlist entries. In OBS issue #6513, a report described one .xspf file repeating after a directory of .xspf files was added. The report concerned OBS 27.2.4 on Windows 10 and was closed as not planned; it is a specific case, not evidence that OBS folders generally fail.

3. Set the end behavior and playback order
Once the playlist contains the intended files, choose whether it should restart and whether the order should change.
| Setting | What it controls | Choose it when |
|---|---|---|
| Loop Playlist | Whether playback starts again after the source runs out of media files. | Enable it to repeat the full listed playlist; disable it to let playback finish. |
| Shuffle Playlist | Whether the files play in randomized order instead of listed order. | Enable it for randomized playback; disable it to keep the listed order. |
OBS documentation lists Loop Playlist enabled and Shuffle Playlist disabled as implementation defaults. These settings affect end behavior and order, not playlist membership: neither can supply entries that are absent from the list.

4. If the same video still repeats
- The source is Media Source: replace it with, or add, a VLC Video Source and put each intended video in that source’s playlist.
- The playlist shows only one video: add the missing videos as separate entries. Looping a one-item list will repeat that one item.
- The playlist shows an .xspf file: check whether you added playlist documents where you meant to add the videos or a playlist containing those videos.
- VLC Video Source is unavailable: install VLC, matching the architecture of OBS; for 64-bit OBS, use 64-bit VLC.
- You suspect a software issue: record your OBS version, operating system, exact source type, and the entries shown in the playlist. The documented XSPF report does not establish a general fault across other versions or setups.
