Yes—OBS can play MKV, MOV, and MP4 files, but for a playlist of local clips you should use OBS’s VLC Video source, not its single-file Media Source. VLC must be installed, and its 32- or 64-bit version must match OBS. A file extension alone cannot guarantee playback: the codecs inside the file and your system’s support for them matter too. YouTube receives the encoded stream OBS sends, not the original playlist files.
Which OBS source should you use?

OBS describes VLC Video as supporting a playlist, unlike Media Source. VLC Video also has playback controls such as loop and shuffle. In its properties, playlist looping is on by default and shuffle is off by default; check these settings rather than assuming they match the broadcast you intend to run. How to add an MKV, MOV, or MP4 playlist in OBS
- Install VLC. Download and install a VLC build with the same architecture as OBS. If VLC Video is unavailable in OBS, check that VLC is installed and that the 32-/64-bit versions match.
- Add the playlist source. In your scene, choose Sources → + → VLC Video. Name the source, then add the files to its playlist in the order you want them to play.
- Set playback behavior. In the VLC Video properties, decide whether to enable Loop Playlist or Shuffle Playlist. Confirm that the order and looping behavior are intentional.
- Check every file in the actual setup. Play the full playlist in OBS and watch for black video, missing audio, playback errors, or transitions that behave differently than expected. A file may work in one player but fail in the OBS/VLC and operating-system combination you are using.
- Preview audio and picture before going live. Check OBS’s preview and audio meters, then run a YouTube test stream. YouTube recommends testing with audio and video movement similar to the planned broadcast; check stream health before the real event.
Why a supported extension may still fail
MKV, MOV, and MP4 are container formats: they package encoded video and audio, but do not specify one universal codec. OBS’s supported-extension list is not a promise that every file bearing one of those suffixes will decode. Codec, profile, file integrity, and the software and operating-system setup can all affect playback. If one playlist item fails while others work, inspect that file’s audio and video codecs rather than focusing only on its extension. Test the exact files on the machine and OBS installation you will use for the broadcast. If a file fails, try playing it in VLC, verify that it is intact, and check its codecs against OBS’s format guidance. Do not assume converting every file is necessary: first identify what is actually unsupported.

Local playlist files and YouTube’s incoming stream are separate
With either source, OBS decodes and plays the local media into the scene, then its encoder sends a live stream to YouTube. YouTube does not receive the original MKV, MOV, or MP4 playlist files. Consequently, the playlist’s file container does not have to match YouTube’s ingest protocol or outgoing stream codec.
Configure OBS’s stream output for the YouTube ingest path you choose. YouTube’s live encoder settings guidance covers RTMP/RTMPS, video codecs, frame rate, keyframe frequency, audio, and bitrate; it recommends RTMPS. The guidance includes up to 60 fps and recommends a two-second keyframe frequency, not exceeding four seconds. YouTube may update its specifications, so check the current page when configuring a stream. YouTube says it automatically detects the encoder settings chosen.

YouTube also documents HLS ingestion separately. Its HLS setup guidance specifies TS segments lasting one to four seconds, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, HTTPS POST/PUT, and no encryption other than HTTPS. This transport playlist is not an OBS playlist of local video files. Follow the requirements for the ingest protocol you actually select; do not apply HLS segment rules to the VLC Video source.
Troubleshoot a failed OBS playlist
- VLC Video does not appear: Install VLC and make sure its architecture matches OBS (32-bit or 64-bit).
- One item shows a black screen or will not play: Check the item’s codecs and profile, file integrity, and playback in the target VLC/OBS setup. The extension by itself does not establish compatibility.
- Video plays but sound is missing: Check that the file contains an audio track and that OBS’s audio meters respond during playback. Review the VLC Video source’s audio-track settings.
- The playlist stops or plays in an unexpected order: Review the VLC Video properties for loop and shuffle settings, and confirm the playlist order.
- OBS preview works but YouTube’s stream has a problem: Check OBS’s outgoing encoder and ingest configuration, then inspect YouTube stream health in a test broadcast. Local file compatibility and YouTube ingest compatibility are different troubleshooting steps.
