For one video, use OBS’s Media Source and turn on Loop. For several videos in one playlist—or a shuffled playlist—use VLC Video. VLC Video requires VLC to be installed, with its architecture matching OBS. These source choices control playback inside OBS; they do not determine YouTube’s account, stream-key, or policy requirements.

Which OBS source should you choose?

Your goal Starting choice Why
Repeat one local video Media Source It has a dedicated Loop control that restarts the file after playback completes.
Play several local videos in sequence VLC Video It supports a playlist in one source.
Shuffle a group of videos VLC Video It has a separate Shuffle Playlist setting.
Avoid installing VLC Media Source It is OBS’s built-in alternative for adding a media file.
Decide what happens when a source is hidden by a scene change Review VLC Video’s visibility behavior Its behavior options can stop and restart, pause and resume, or keep playback going while hidden.

These are documented feature differences, not a performance comparison. OBS documentation does not establish that either source gives a more seamless loop, uses less CPU, or keeps audio better synchronized on every system. If a clean loop boundary matters, test the actual file in the scene where you intend to use it.

How to loop one video with Media Source

  1. Add the source: in OBS, select the scene where the video should appear, then use the Sources panel’s add control and choose Media Source. Create a new source or select an existing one.
  2. Select the file: in the source properties, enable Local File if needed and browse to the video. OBS documents support for formats including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM, as well as common audio formats.
  3. Enable repeat: turn on Loop. OBS lists Loop as off by default; when enabled, the file starts again after playback completes.
  4. Apply and check playback: confirm the source properties and watch the end-to-start transition in the scene. A setting that repeats the file does not by itself guarantee that a particular file will have a visually or audibly seamless boundary.

OBS defines scenes and sources as the elements that make up a stream layout; Media Source adds media files to a scene. See the OBS Sources Guide and the OBS Media Sources documentation.

How to loop a playlist with VLC Video

  1. Install VLC first: VLC Video relies on VLC libraries and does not appear as an available source unless VLC is installed. OBS states that 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.
  2. Add VLC Video: in the scene’s Sources panel, add VLC Video, then add the local video files you want in its playlist.
  3. Choose playlist behavior: leave Loop Playlist enabled to repeat the playlist. OBS lists it as on by default. Enable Shuffle Playlist only if you want randomized playback; it is off by default.
  4. Set hidden-source behavior: decide what should happen when another scene is selected and this source becomes hidden. The VLC source implementation provides stop/restart, pause/unpause, and always-play behavior. Choose according to whether playback should resume, restart, or continue out of view.
  5. Test the complete sequence: play through the end of the list and a scene change. Confirm the order, repeat behavior, visibility behavior, and transitions with the files you will actually use.

For a playlist, OBS describes VLC Video as letting you add video and other media files to the source for playback in scenes. Its available formats can be extended through VLC libraries. See the OBS Media Sources documentation and the VLC video source implementation.

What looping in OBS does—and does not—cover for YouTube

Media Source and VLC Video determine how media plays inside an OBS scene. The OBS documentation cited here does not establish current YouTube Live account eligibility, stream-key setup, ingestion settings, or platform-policy requirements. Check YouTube’s current guidance for those matters rather than treating a looping source as proof that a channel is ready or permitted to stream.

Also make sure you have the rights needed to use the video and audio. Repeating a file does not change the underlying content or remove copyright considerations. The source documentation does not establish YouTube’s current rules for copyrighted or reused material.

VLC for Fire
  • VLC for Kindle plays most local video and audio files, as well as network streams (including adaptive streaming), like the desktop version of VLC.
  • VLC for Kindle has a media library for audio and video files, and allows to browse folders directly.
  • VLC has support for multi-track audio and subtitles. It supports auto-rotation, aspect-ratio adjustments, hardware acceleration and gestures to control volume.
  • It also includes a widget for audio control, supports audio headsets control, cover art and a complete audio media library.

Troubleshooting

  • VLC Video is missing from the source menu: install VLC. If OBS is 64-bit, use 64-bit VLC, as specified by OBS.
  • A single video stops at the end: open Media Source properties and enable Loop; its documented default is off.
  • The playlist ends instead of starting over: check that Loop Playlist is on in VLC Video properties.
  • The playlist does not play in a random order: enable Shuffle Playlist. It is a separate control and is off by default.
  • Playback changes when switching scenes: inspect the VLC source’s visibility behavior and choose whether it should stop and restart, pause and resume, or always play while hidden.
  • The end-to-start transition has a gap or audio issue: test the file and setup directly. The documented Loop option restarts playback, but the cited documentation does not promise a seamless boundary or universal audio-sync behavior.
