First, find out where the video freezes: in the OBS preview, in an OBS local recording, or only on YouTube. A freeze in OBS or the recording points toward local playback, rendering, or encoding; if both are healthy but YouTube is not, check stream health and the outbound connection. Then verify the Media Source’s loop settings and test one change at a time.

1. Check whether the file reached its end or froze mid-playback

Watch the OBS preview and note whether the clip stopped at its natural end or stalled partway through. Also note whether the problem began after changing scenes or hiding the source. These details distinguish a loop-setting issue from a playback or performance problem.

  • Stops at the end: check the Media Source’s Loop setting.
  • Stops when changing scenes: check how the source behaves when it becomes active or inactive.
  • Freezes mid-file: check local playback and OBS performance before changing YouTube bitrate or network settings.

2. Verify the OBS Media Source settings

Enable looping for a single file

  1. In OBS, find the local video under Sources and open the Media Source’s Properties.
  2. Enable Loop if the file should restart when playback reaches its end. OBS documents this setting as replaying the file after playback completes. OBS Media Sources documentation.
  3. Check Restart playback when source becomes active separately if the video should start over when it becomes visible in the current scene. This setting is not the same as looping.
  4. Review Show nothing when playback ends if the source goes blank at the end. That setting controls what appears after playback ends; it does not make the file loop.

Check what happens when the source is hidden

Close file when inactive unloads the file when the source is hidden or off the current scene. If the freeze reliably follows a scene change or period when the source is inactive, test with this setting disabled and observe whether the behavior changes. An older OBS issue report describes looped sources unloading after inactivity in a particular configuration, but it does not establish a universal current bug: OBS issue #3192.

Test hardware decoding only as a controlled comparison

Hardware decoding is an optional Media Source property and is off by default in OBS’s documented properties. If the file still hangs, change this setting, test playback, and note the result. Revert it if playback becomes less stable; the documentation does not say that enabling it always fixes freezes. OBS lists supported file extensions, but does not prescribe one conversion or codec that resolves every case. OBS Media Sources documentation.

If a single Media Source remains problematic, a VLC Video Source can serve as a comparison for media files or playlists, but it is available only when VLC is installed and is not a guaranteed fix. Change one variable at a time and test before a critical broadcast.

3. See whether OBS itself is falling behind

Compare the preview with a local recording

Make a short local recording while the issue occurs, if practical. If the OBS preview and recording both freeze, focus on local playback or OBS’s rendering and encoding path. If both look healthy, move on to YouTube’s stream-health information and the connection. This comparison is a diagnostic guide, not a guarantee about every setup.

Reduce load when there is evidence of a performance bottleneck

OBS needs GPU resources to composite and render scenes. Rendering or encoding can fall behind if the system is overloaded. If OBS indicates overload or other evidence points to a resource bottleneck, try these focused checks from OBS’s encoding performance troubleshooting guide:

  • Simplify the scene and remove or limit expensive sources that are not needed.
  • Use media sized appropriately for the stream output rather than rendering unnecessarily large video.
  • Close other GPU-intensive applications you know are safe to close.
  • On Windows, try running OBS as administrator as a quick GPU-overload check.

These steps address possible OBS performance strain; they are not guaranteed cures for a file-decoder or source-specific freeze. Keep a note of original settings and test one adjustment at a time so you can identify which change affected the result.

4. If OBS looks fine, check YouTube’s view of the stream

Open YouTube Live Control Room and inspect stream-health status and any displayed error messages. YouTube recommends checking the encoder output, encoder errors, CPU load, and local archive to separate a source or encoder issue from a connection problem. If the encoder output and local archive look healthy, test the outbound internet connection. Follow YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guidance and stream metrics guidance.

YouTube’s preflight guidance recommends testing with representative audio and video motion, checking the Live Control Room preview before going live, and monitoring stream health during the event. Its streaming tips advise leaving 20% upload headroom; the reviewed page does not state a publication year for that figure. Headroom can help with connection capacity, but it will not repair a file that is already frozen in OBS. See YouTube streaming tips.

Change bitrate only when the evidence points to an ingest-setting issue

YouTube’s encoder-settings table lists 10 Mbps recommended for 1080p at 30 fps with AV1 or H.265, and 14 Mbps recommended for 1080p at 30 fps with H.264. The reviewed page does not state a publication year for these recommendations. They are ingest recommendations for the specified codec, resolution, and frame rate—not fixes for a locally frozen Media Source. Check YouTube’s current encoder settings guidance before changing settings because recommendations may change.

5. Troubleshoot by symptom

What you see Where to investigate Next check
Video stops at the end of the file Media Source playback behavior Confirm Loop is enabled.
Video stops after a scene change or after being hidden Source activation and inactivity Review Restart playback when source becomes active and Close file when inactive.
Preview and local recording freeze Local playback, rendering, or encoding Check source properties and look for evidence of OBS performance strain.
Preview and local recording are healthy, but YouTube playback is not Encoder output, stream health, or outbound connection Check YouTube Live Control Room messages and test the outbound connection if local outputs are healthy.
Only captured browser playback freezes Capture path rather than necessarily the local Media Source Do not assume this is the same issue. A June 2026 OBS issue report concerns Chrome/Brave playback under Window or Display Capture on a particular Windows 11 system after a resize or focus change; it is not evidence for a universal Media Source fix. OBS issue #13553.
