OBS hotkeys can give you quick keyboard control over a YouTube playlist stream, but they do not make a broadcast self-running or guarantee 24/7 uptime. Set up the right playback source, assign and test hotkeys in OBS, and check how the media behaves when its source is hidden before relying on the setup unattended.
Choose the right OBS source for your playlist
OBS offers two relevant playback approaches, depending on whether you want to repeat one clip or play several files. Their settings control playback; neither choice by itself monitors the stream or restores it after a failure.

Set what happens when the playlist source is hidden
In a scene-based setup, changing scenes may hide the playlist source. VLC Video has visibility behavior options that determine whether playback stops and restarts, pauses and resumes, or continues while hidden. Choose the behavior that matches your scene transitions and test it; do not assume hidden media keeps playing.
Assign hotkeys in OBS
Open Settings > Hotkeys in OBS Studio. Find the action you want and assign a distinct key or combination. The available actions depend on the installed OBS version and source types, so use the labels shown in your own Hotkeys panel.

Useful actions to consider
- Start Streaming and Stop Streaming for broadcast control.
- Start Recording and Stop Recording if you also record locally.
- Show and Hide for the playlist source, if you need to control its visibility.
- Switch to Scene for scenes you use during the broadcast.
- Audio push-to-talk or push-to-mute and replay-buffer controls, if those features are part of your setup.
- A playlist-next action, if it appears for your VLC Video source and OBS build. The OBS project registers a playlist-next hotkey for that source, but the available media actions and labels can vary; check your Hotkeys panel and the OBS VLC video source implementation.
OBS’s Overview Guide describes configurable hotkeys for common controls, including streaming, recording, sources, and scenes. These configurable actions are different from the editing and preview commands covered by the Keyboard Shortcuts page. Do not assume a familiar editing shortcut controls playlist playback.
Check for conflicts and test safely
- In Settings > Hotkeys, assign distinct combinations to the actions you need. Avoid combinations you might press accidentally while using another application.
- Check the panel for conflicts and confirm that each intended action has the correct assignment.
- Rehearse the keys with the intended scene and source setup. Verify that a show/hide key does what you expect to the media, and that scene changes do not interrupt playlist playback unexpectedly.
- Before broadcasting publicly, test the stream and scenes in a private or otherwise safe rehearsal. Confirm picture, audio, and the playlist transition you intend to use.

Use remote controls only if you need them
Keyboard hotkeys are sufficient for basic local control. If you want a phone, control deck, or external application to operate OBS, OBS WebSocket is included by default with OBS Studio 28 and later, according to the OBS Project’s Remote Control Guide. That guide lists clients including Macro Deck, Touch Portal, Streamer.bot, and Bitfocus Companion.
Enable authentication and set a password before connecting remote controls. Do not expose an unauthenticated control endpoint. WebSocket is an optional control path, not an uptime monitor or a recovery guarantee.

What hotkeys cannot automate for 24/7 operation
A hotkey runs an action when someone or something presses it. It does not independently check whether YouTube is still receiving the stream, restart OBS after a crash, restore power or internet, or guarantee that the playlist will continue without interruption. A long-running OBS broadcast still relies on the host computer, its power and network connection, the media source, and the streaming platform.
The OBS materials cited here do not establish guaranteed 24/7 uptime or YouTube archive availability. They also do not establish current YouTube limits for continuous livestream length or archiving, so check current YouTube Help guidance for those platform rules rather than relying on an assumed duration.
