Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallStart by checking the settings that define the outgoing stream—not by resetting all of OBS. Review the streaming encoder and codec, rate control, bitrate, keyframe interval, frame rate, YouTube service, and selected stream key. The timing makes a recent change worth investigating, but does not by itself prove which setting caused the disconnect.
First identify what failed
Before changing anything else, note your OBS version and operating system, the encoder setting you changed, the exact disconnect or error message, and whether OBS reports dropped frames. If the basic checks below do not resolve the issue, an OBS log can help distinguish an encoder problem from a connection or setup problem.
- Dropped frames or a changing connection indicator: investigate upload stability and bitrate first. OBS says dropped frames indicate a connection problem between your computer and the remote ingest server, or a connection that cannot sustain the selected bitrate; too many dropped frames can disconnect a stream. OBS Stream Connection Troubleshooting (published 2024-09-30).
- No dropped frames, but YouTube reports an ingest or format problem: compare the output format and encoder settings with YouTube’s requirements.
- OBS cannot connect, or YouTube is not receiving the intended broadcast: verify the service, stream key, and broadcast selection.
A disconnect after an encoder change is a useful clue, not proof that the encoder caused it. The exact fix depends on what changed and what OBS and YouTube report.
Check the encoder and output settings
In OBS, open Settings > Output and inspect the streaming encoder and its active settings. Compare them with YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate guidance. YouTube lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1; recommends CBR; recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds; and supports frame rates up to 60 fps. Its bitrate recommendations vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate, so there is no single suitable bitrate for every stream.

For one specific reference point, YouTube’s table recommends 6 Mbps minimum and 17 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps using H.264. For the same resolution and frame rate, its table gives 4 Mbps minimum and 12 Mbps for AV1 or H.265. These are YouTube platform recommendations, not a guarantee that your upload connection can sustain those rates.
Roll back only the changed setting
If the stream stopped working immediately after a change, restore that field to a previously working value or a configuration compatible with YouTube, then test before changing anything else. Change one setting at a time so you can tell which adjustment affects the result. Test with motion and audio, not just a static scene. YouTube recommends testing before going live and monitoring stream health.

Verify YouTube service, stream key, and broadcast
In OBS, confirm that the streaming service is YouTube RTMPS and that the intended stream key is selected. A compatible encoder configuration will not help if OBS is pointed at the wrong key or event. Check the stream’s status in YouTube Live Control Room for an ingest warning or confirmation that data is arriving.
The OBS guide How to stream to YouTube with OBS Studio describes selecting YouTube RTMPS, choosing a stream key, and checking the Live Control Room. Interface labels can change between versions, so use the current OBS and YouTube screens if a label differs.

If OBS shows dropped frames, test bitrate and connection
Lower the bitrate if your stable upload connection cannot sustain the current setting. OBS suggests 75% of total upload speed as a starting point, subject to the streaming service’s bitrate limits. This is a troubleshooting starting point from OBS, not a universal target: available upload speed can vary, and YouTube’s codec, resolution, and frame-rate recommendations still apply.
If reducing bitrate does not help, OBS also recommends checking the connection path, testing another server or service, and reviewing network settings or software that could affect the connection. Avoid treating dynamic bitrate as a root-cause fix: OBS describes it as a workaround when underlying connection issues cannot be resolved, and it can reduce stream quality.

Test the repaired configuration
- Keep the YouTube service and intended stream key selected.
- Use a compatible codec, CBR, a two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds), a supported frame rate, and a bitrate appropriate to the codec, resolution, frame rate, and stable upload connection.
- Make only one adjustment at a time, starting with the setting you changed most recently.
- Test the stream with motion and audio, and check both OBS’s connection status and YouTube Live Control Room before relying on it for a live broadcast.
Common symptoms and next steps
| Symptom | What to check | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| OBS reports dropped frames or a deteriorating connection indicator | Upload stability and whether the selected bitrate is sustainable | Reduce bitrate to a sustainable level; then review the connection path if drops continue. |
| OBS stays connected, but YouTube flags stream health or format | Codec, rate control, bitrate, keyframe interval, resolution, and frame rate | Compare each setting with YouTube’s current encoder guidance. |
| OBS fails to connect or YouTube does not receive the intended event | YouTube RTMPS service, selected stream key, and broadcast status | Confirm the key and event in OBS and check Live Control Room. |
| The problem persists after these checks | OBS version, operating system, exact changed field, error text, and OBS log | Use the log and error details to diagnose the specific failure rather than resetting unrelated preferences. |
