To balance looped videos in OBS, add each video as its own Media Source, enable Loop in its properties, and adjust that source’s fader in the Audio Mixer. Play the clips, listen to them, and check a test recording: meter readings alone cannot tell you whether different clips will sound equally loud.

Set up looped videos with independent volume controls

  1. In your OBS scene, add each local video as a separate Media Source. Give each source a recognizable name so you can match it to its mixer entry.
  2. Open a source’s properties and enable Loop. OBS will replay that file when playback reaches the end. See the OBS Media Sources guide for source options and supported media formats.
  3. Repeat for every clip that needs its own volume adjustment. Each source then has its own Audio Mixer meter and fader.
  4. Start playback and adjust each source’s fader in the Audio Mixer. Make small changes, listen to the result, and record a representative test before publishing.

The fader changes the output level of its source. It does not repair a poor original recording or automatically balance individual clips inside one combined file. If several clips are combined into a single source, that source has one mixer fader; use separate sources or edit the clip levels before importing if you need per-clip control.

Choose the right OBS source for one video or a playlist

One local video

Use a Media Source with Loop enabled. This is the straightforward choice when one file should repeat.

A playlist of local videos

Use VLC Video, add the clips to its playlist, and use Loop Playlist. OBS documents this option as enabled by default. VLC must be installed for the VLC Video source to be available. The playlist is one source, so it does not provide separate mixer faders for each item; prepare clip levels in an editor if they need different levels.

Balance by listening, not by chasing a number

OBS’s Audio Mixer shows each source name, a level meter, a volume fader with a decibel reading, and controls such as mute and monitoring. Start playback for each clip and adjust its fader while comparing how the clips sound. Equal-looking meter readings do not guarantee equal perceived loudness: OBS warns that a sound that appears equally loud on a meter may sound louder to viewers.

OBS’s mixer guidance treats meter colors as practical guidance, not a universal mastering target: speech should reach the lower end of red and sit in the upper yellow range; gameplay or similar content should sit lower in yellow; and background music and alert effects should remain in green. Red is near clipping, where distortion can occur. These are qualitative OBS recommendations, not a YouTube loudness specification or a single ideal level for every video.

Behringer XENYX 802S Premium Analog 8-Input Mixer with USB Streaming Interface
  • Analog mixing and equalization for pure sound
  • Direct mixing of PC/gaming sounds into the streaming output
  • Ultra-low noise analog mixer for streaming, podcasting and recording
  • Stereo USB audio interface to connect your computer or mobile device

Use Audio Monitoring in Advanced Audio Properties to listen to the signal reaching OBS, then make a normal test recording and listen to it from beginning to end before publishing. If the source is a microphone or another input device, check its level at the device or application first, then make any needed adjustment in OBS. OBS defaults to stereo and downmixes surround sound to stereo unless configured otherwise, so check channel behavior if the recording sounds different from the source.

If the videos play in another application

Loading files as Media Sources is different from capturing audio from a browser or another program. OBS documents Application Audio Capture for Windows 10 version 2004 or later and Windows 11; OBS Studio 30.1 can also include audio with Window Capture or Game Capture. These are Windows-specific instructions, not cross-platform guidance.

  • Plug-and-play connectivity to computer or mobile device (no special drivers required)

  • Equipped with a single mic input (XLR or ¼"), two LINE inputs for guitar and keyboard, and USB-C input for connecting to a computer

When using separate Application Audio Capture sources, disable global Desktop Audio if capturing both paths causes echo or doubled sound. If an application is incompatible with Application Audio Capture, OBS describes virtual-cable routing, including VB-Cable, as an optional Windows workaround. A virtual cable is not needed for local files loaded as Media Sources.

Recording tracks: live mix versus later editing

Separate recording tracks let you preserve audio sources for post-production; they are not separate live volume faders. Standard video players generally play only one track at a time. For a recording intended to go directly to YouTube without editing, OBS recommends putting all required sources on track 1. If you need isolated tracks for editing, assign and enable the tracks you need, then verify them in your editor and in the exported file. See the OBS Multiple Audio Track Recording Guide.

Common problems and fixes

  • One clip is much louder than another: Confirm each clip has its own source and adjust its own mixer fader while listening. If they share one combined source, separate or edit the clips to gain individual control.
  • The meter looks similar, but one clip sounds louder: Trust a listening comparison and test recording over meter appearance alone; perceived loudness can differ.
  • The audio distorts: Check whether the meter is reaching red, which OBS describes as near clipping. Reduce the source level and listen to another recording.
  • The playlist does not loop: Check Loop Playlist in the VLC Video source properties and confirm VLC is installed.
  • Captured application audio echoes: If using Application Audio Capture, check for duplicate capture through global Desktop Audio and disable Desktop Audio when appropriate.
  • A YouTube upload has no expected audio: For direct playback without editing, ensure the audio is on track 1. If using isolated tracks, verify the intended track is enabled and present in the exported file.
