For an AI agent, use OAuth-based delegated access rather than giving the agent a password. OAuth can limit access by resource, operation, audience and time, then let you rotate or revoke that access without changing a person’s account password. It is not automatically safe: an OAuth bearer token can be replayed by anyone who steals it, and a broad or poorly enforced scope can still permit harmful actions. The secure design is a short-lived, narrowly scoped, policy-checked token with protected storage and audit records that identify both the agent and the human or service that delegated the work.
OAuth and passwords at a glance
| Security or operations concern | Password shared with an agent | OAuth access token |
|---|---|---|
| Credential type | Primary, reusable account credential | Delegated credential issued for a defined authorization context |
| Blast radius after theft | Potential reuse anywhere the account password is accepted | Bound by the issued scope, audience, lifetime and any sender constraint |
| Least privilege | Usually inherits account-level authority | Can be limited to resources, tools or operations |
| Expiry | Normally remains valid until changed or disabled | Can be short-lived; RFC 6750 recommends one hour or less in leakage-prone environments |
| Revocation | Password reset affects every use of the account and can disrupt people and services | Token expiry, refresh-token rotation and targeted revocation can isolate one delegation |
| Audit trail | Downstream systems often see only the shared account | Gateway and services can preserve subject, agent, delegation and task metadata |
| Operational effort | Easy to replay, but exposes a highly privileged secret | Requires an authorization server or broker, policy enforcement and secret-handling controls |
The comparison is not between a harmless password and a magical token. It is between two credential-management models. OAuth gives you control points that a password does not, while introducing token storage, policy and lifecycle work that must be implemented correctly.
Why a password is the wrong primitive for an AI agent
A password is reusable and account-wide
A password is a primary credential. Whoever has it can usually authenticate wherever that account is accepted, with the same authority a person receives after signing in. The password does not express which tool the agent may call, which records it may read, or whether a particular operation was delegated for a single task. Any reduction in authority has to be created elsewhere, such as by making a separate account and manually limiting it.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesPasswords also tend to spread. An agent may place them in prompts, memory, configuration files, tool arguments, traces or logs. NIST’s agent-identity guidance specifically warns that credentials are often left in configuration files, markdown files and logs. A copied password can remain useful long after the original task has ended, and finding every copy is difficult.

The password-credentials grant preserves the anti-pattern
OAuth 2.0’s resource owner password credentials grant asks a client to collect the user’s password and exchange it for an access token. RFC 6749 says this grant carries a higher risk because it maintains the password anti-pattern the protocol seeks to avoid, and warns that a password could be disclosed through log files or other records kept by the client. RFC 9700 is unambiguous: the resource owner password credentials grant MUST NOT be used. Do not build a new agent integration around it, even if it appears simpler than redirecting a user to an authorization server.
Password reset is a blunt recovery mechanism
If a shared password leaks, the normal response is to reset it. That invalidates every legitimate use that depends on the password and still leaves uncertainty about copies stored in old agents, scripts or logs. You must identify all applications that used the account, update them, and investigate whether the attacker created sessions or changed data before the reset.
What OAuth changes—and what it does not
Delegation can be made specific
An authorization server can issue an access token for a particular resource server, audience, scope and time window. For an agent, that might mean read-only access to a single project, permission to create a draft but not publish it, or the ability to call one data-retrieval tool without access to administrative endpoints. The token represents a delegation rather than the user’s reusable login secret.
RFC 9700 recommends minimum privileges and audience restriction. A token issued for one API should not be accepted by another API merely because both use the same identity system. Scope should describe the smallest useful capability, and the resource server must enforce it on every request.
Bearer tokens are still replayable
Most OAuth access tokens are bearer tokens. RFC 6819 defines a bearer token as one that can be used by any party that possesses it. If an attacker copies a valid token from a trace, environment variable, memory dump or compromised tool, the attacker can present it until the token expires or is revoked. The token does not prove that the caller is the original agent.

TLS protects the token while it travels between components, but it does not protect a token that is deliberately written to a log or exposed to a compromised process. RFC 6750 recommends TLS, short-lived bearer tokens, scoped tokens and audience restriction. In environments where leakage is a serious concern, it recommends an access-token lifetime of one hour or less; that is guidance for the deployment’s risk conditions, not a universal timer.
Sender-constrained tokens reduce replay
Where the deployment supports it, prefer sender-constrained access tokens using mechanisms such as Demonstration of Proof of Possession (DPoP) or mutual TLS. The resource server can require the caller to prove possession of a key associated with the token, so a copied token is less useful by itself. This control adds key provisioning and verification complexity; it complements rather than replaces short lifetimes, narrow scopes and secure storage.
Compare the security properties that matter
Blast radius after theft
A stolen password may work against every service that accepts the account and can remain effective until the password changes. A stolen OAuth token is limited only if the issuer and resource server actually enforce its scope, audience and expiry. A token with broad write permissions and a long lifetime can still produce a large incident. Design each token so that the worst plausible misuse affects one resource and one task, not an entire account.
Least privilege for tools and operations
Agent permissions should be finer than “can use the application.” OWASP’s AI controls recommend per-tool and per-operation allowlists, narrowly typed schemas, separate read and write credentials and per-call capability tokens. A read credential should not be accepted by a write endpoint. A publishing operation should require a distinct capability from drafting, and a tool should reject parameters outside its schema before making a downstream request.
Scopes alone are not an instruction to the model. Enforce policy at a gateway or tool boundary. The gateway should map the requested operation to an allowlist, verify the token’s audience and scope, validate resource ownership, and deny calls that fall outside the delegation. Prompt instructions such as “never delete data” are not an authorization control.

Lifecycle and revocation
Access tokens should expire quickly enough that a leak has a bounded window. If the agent needs to continue, use a refresh credential protected in a vault and rotate refresh tokens. RFC 9700 recommends sender-constrained or rotated refresh tokens for public clients. Rotation lets the authorization server detect reuse of an older refresh token and terminate the token family.

Auditability: proving what the agent did
Why shared credentials destroy attribution
When several agents or people use one password, a downstream log can usually identify only the account. The same ambiguity occurs when a service receives a token but discards the delegation context. You may know that an account changed a record, but not which agent initiated the call, which human approved it, or which task required it.
Fields an auditable request should carry
At the gateway and in downstream service logs, record the human or service subject, the agent identity, the delegation or task identifier, the requested tool, the target resource, the authorization decision, the timestamp and the result. Preserve these fields across service-to-service calls rather than replacing them with a generic service account. Log denials as well as successful actions so an investigation can distinguish attempted misuse from completed changes.
Delegation metadata must be integrity-protected and correlated with the token or request. Do not put raw access or refresh tokens in logs, traces or error messages. Redact authorization headers and review telemetry exporters that may copy request context to third parties.

Audit records do not make an action safe
A complete log tells you what happened; it does not prevent a harmful call. OAuth is an authorization framework, not evidence that an agent is trustworthy. Prompt injection can cause an agent to request an operation that its valid token permits. Combine identity records with tool allowlists, human approval for high-impact actions, input validation and anomaly detection.
A secure implementation pattern
- Keep passwords out of the agent. Never place a user password in prompts, model context, agent memory, tool arguments, source code or configuration supplied to the model. Have the user authenticate directly with the authorization server instead of handing the password to the agent.
- Issue a task-specific delegation. Use an authorization server or broker to request a token for the exact resource, audience, operation and time window. Request the minimum scopes needed for the current task. If the task needs both reading and writing, obtain separate credentials or separate capabilities rather than one broad token.
- Enforce policy outside the model. Put a gateway or tool boundary between the agent and each resource server. Verify issuer, signature, audience, expiry and scope; apply per-tool and per-operation allowlists; validate narrowly typed parameters; and deny calls that do not match the delegation.
- Protect refresh credentials. Store refresh tokens and client keys in a protected vault with access controls, rotation and monitoring. Keep short-lived access tokens in memory only as long as practical. Redact tokens from application logs, traces, crash reports and support bundles.
- Constrain the sender where possible. Use DPoP or mutual TLS when the platform can securely manage the associated key. If sender constraint is unavailable, compensate with shorter access-token lifetimes, narrower scopes, strict audience checks and isolation of the agent runtime.
- Write identity-rich audit events. Include subject, agent, delegation or task ID, tool, resource, decision, timestamp and result in every authorization and execution event. Propagate the correlation data to downstream services and protect the logs from unauthorized alteration.
- Operate revocation and review. Give operators a way to revoke one token, delegation or agent identity, plus a kill switch for a compromised deployment. Rotate refresh tokens, review active delegations on a defined cadence and investigate unusual denied or successful operations.
Architecture choices for common agent deployments
Personal assistant acting for one user
Use an interactive authorization flow in which the user signs in at the authorization server and grants a narrowly defined delegation. The agent receives tokens, not the password. Separate read capabilities from actions that modify or publish data, and require an explicit confirmation step for high-impact operations.
Background service acting for an organization
Represent the service or workload as a distinct agent identity and issue credentials for the service subject and approved resources. Do not reuse a human password or a shared account. Bind each run to a task identifier so an audit reviewer can connect automated calls to the initiating workflow and approval.
Public or distributed agent client
Assume the client cannot keep a long-term secret reliably. Use short-lived access tokens, rotate refresh tokens and prefer sender-constrained tokens where feasible. Keep policy enforcement at a trusted gateway rather than in code or prompts delivered to the client.
Recommended Free Tools
Multiple tools behind one orchestrator
Do not give the orchestrator one universal token. Issue per-tool or per-operation capabilities, with distinct audiences for distinct resource servers. A compromise of a search connector should not automatically grant write access to a billing or production system.

Failure modes and recovery actions
An access token appears in a log
Treat the token as compromised. Revoke it if the authorization server supports targeted revocation, block the related agent identity at the gateway, inspect audit events for use during the token’s validity window, and remove the logging path that exposed it. Rotate any refresh token that could have been exposed and issue a new delegation with reduced lifetime or scope.
The agent requests an operation outside its task
Deny the call at the policy gateway, record the attempted tool, resource and reason, and require a new delegation or human approval for a legitimate change in purpose. Do not expand the existing token simply because the model asked for a broader scope.
Logs show only a service account
Pause high-impact automation until identity propagation is fixed. Add agent, subject and delegation identifiers to the gateway event and carry them to downstream services. Retrospective records that lack those fields cannot reliably establish which agent performed an action.

Do not replace the password with the deprecated resource owner password credentials grant.
How to decide for a new integration
- Choose delegated OAuth access when the agent acts on a user’s or organization’s behalf, needs different permissions for different tools, or must be revoked without disrupting unrelated applications.
- Use a separate machine identity and narrowly scoped token for unattended workloads; never encode a person’s password as the workload credential.
- Reject an OAuth design that issues one long-lived, all-purpose bearer token, accepts tokens at multiple audiences, or relies on the model to enforce its own scopes.
- Require sender constraint when the deployment can support secure key management; otherwise reduce lifetime and scope and harden the runtime and vault.
- Make audit requirements part of the design: if you cannot identify the subject, agent, delegation, operation, resource, decision and result, you cannot reliably investigate agent behavior.
Verdict
OAuth tokens are generally safer and substantially more auditable than passwords for AI agents because they can express limited, expiring delegation and preserve agent identity. The security gain comes from implementation: minimum privilege, audience restriction, short lifetimes, refresh-token rotation, sender constraint where available, protected storage, gateway-enforced policy and identity-rich logs. A bearer token that is broad, long-lived or exposed in telemetry simply replaces one reusable secret with another. Never give a new agent integration a password or use the resource owner password credentials grant; issue and govern a narrowly scoped delegation instead.
