To make progress in NYT Strands, use the daily clue to build a small set of likely word categories, trace plausible letter paths, and let each confirmed answer narrow the theme. The spangram is especially useful: it runs between opposite sides of the board and names the theme. If you get stuck, three valid non-theme words unlock an in-game hint that highlights a theme word.

How to play NYT Strands

Strands is a themed word-search puzzle. You trace letters on a grid to find answers connected to the daily theme, including one special answer called the spangram. The theme changes from puzzle to puzzle, so a solution for a particular day is not a dependable guide to another day’s board.

For a gameplay overview of the word-search, spangram, and hint mechanics, see Tom’s Guide’s Strands guide. The precise wording of the rules can vary by presentation, so follow the instructions shown in the live game.

How to find Strands theme words

  1. Read the clue literally, then broaden it. Think of several categories, synonyms, examples, or phrases the clue could point to. Keep the possibilities tied to what the clue actually suggests.
  2. Scan for paths, not single letters. Look for adjacent letters that could form a word in one of your likely categories. When a candidate fits, submit it; a confirmed answer can help you refine what the theme includes.
  3. Build a word family from each discovery. Consider related objects, examples, actions, or members of the same category. Avoid accepting a traceable word just because it appears on the grid; it should fit the theme.
  4. Re-scan the board as your interpretation changes. A clearer idea of the theme can make a previously overlooked path easier to recognize.

What is a spangram?

The spangram is the special answer that crosses from one side of the board to the opposite side and describes the puzzle’s theme. Its meaning can reveal the connection among the other answers, so it is worth considering as both a word to find and a clue to the rest of the board. Tom’s Guide’s daily Strands coverage and TechRadar’s daily coverage also describe the spangram’s cross-board and thematic role; their day-specific clues and answers change with each puzzle.

How to find the spangram in Strands

  1. Use the theme clue to think of a unifying phrase. Look for a phrase or compound that could summarize the category containing the other themed answers.
  2. Check for a path across the board. A spangram must travel between opposite sides, so prioritize plausible long paths that also fit the theme.
  3. Use its meaning to guide the remaining search. Once you identify it, revisit the grid with its theme in mind and look for related answers.

The spangram can be difficult to spot before the theme is clear. You do not need to solve it first: a confirmed theme word may suggest the category, while the spangram may clarify how the answers fit together.

How do Strands hints work?

When you find three valid words that are not part of the theme, the game unlocks a hint that highlights the letters of one theme word. The hint reduces the search area, but you still trace the answer yourself. Save it for when your category ideas and board scans are no longer producing a likely theme word.

Optional practice beyond the daily puzzle

A word-search puzzle book can offer extra practice spotting letter paths, but it does not teach Strands’ changing themes, spangram, or in-game hint rules. If you choose one, compare puzzle variety, difficulty, print readability, and whether solutions are included. A book is optional; the daily game is playable without one.
