Streaks are tied to finishing on time in your local time zone, while signing in helps preserve progress and stats across devices. Here are the practical answers to common questions about hints, mistakes, streak resets, and older puzzles.
Is NYT Connections free to play?
Yes. The New York Times lists Connections among its daily games available without a Games subscription. A subscription is relevant if you want the full archive and broader Games features, not to play the current daily puzzle. See the NYT Games subscription information for current access details.
How do I get a hint for Connections?
Connections does not have a separately verified official hint feature in the available NYT help information. If you want help without seeing a full solution, try sorting the words by a shared theme, then check whether a tempting word could fit more than one possible group. Third-party hint and answer sites are separate from NYT; they may reveal answers, so use them only if you are comfortable with spoilers.
What counts as a mistake?
NYT’s Connections stats describe a histogram of completed puzzles with zero through four mistakes. The available official help information does not establish the exact submission limit or the precise feedback given for a near-miss guess, so those mechanics should not be confused with a separate hint system. Your stats can show how many mistakes you made on completed puzzles.

Why did my Connections streak reset?
Finishing after midnight
NYT says completing a puzzle after midnight in your local time breaks the streak and starts a new one. The cutoff is local, not one universal time for all players. If you begin near midnight, finish before your local day changes to avoid a timing-related reset.
Playing while signed out
NYT says progress for a logged-out player is stored locally and may be lost. When you log in, saved progress, statistics, and streaks can be available across devices. To keep progress associated with your account, sign in before playing and use that account when switching devices.

Why is there no archive, and how can I play older puzzles?
The official Connections Help Center says eligible NYT All Access and Games subscribers can play the archive back to June 12, 2023. This is the stated archive start date; access may not be identical for every account or platform. The daily puzzle remains free, but the full archive is a subscriber feature.
In the NYT Games app for iOS and Android, archive games and special features are available under the Games tab. NYT says subscribers receive full access, while non-subscribers have limited access. Subscription plans are billed every 28 days or annually and renew automatically unless canceled; check NYT’s subscription page for current prices and terms.

Can I track Connections stats or play with friends?
NYT’s Games apps for iOS and Android include Connections statistics and streaks, plus a Friends leaderboard that tracks Connections matches. Signing in also makes saved progress and stats available across devices. Features can depend on subscription status and platform.

NYT describes Connections: Sports Edition as a sports-themed version of the word game and says it uses the same solving rules. The available official information does not establish its availability on every platform, so check the NYT Games app or site for current access.
