It is designed to support the 2.4, 5 and 6 GHz bands, with a published peak PHY rate of 4.8 Gbps and support for 160 MHz channels. Those are vendor specifications, not independent measurements of real-world Wi‑Fi speed.
What is the NXP CW641?
The CW641 is an access-point and gateway component, not a finished Wi‑Fi router for consumers to plug in. NXP positioned it as a tri-band Wi‑Fi 6E SoC: it supports operation in the 2.4, 5 and newly available 6 GHz bands. The company announced it on January 18, 2021.
Adding 6 GHz gives compatible Wi‑Fi 6E clients another band to use. NXP’s stated rationale is to put bandwidth-hungry, latency-sensitive traffic—such as mesh backhaul or cloud gaming—on 6 GHz where possible, while other devices continue using 2.4 or 5 GHz. That is a network-design goal, not a guarantee that every device or workload will automatically move to 6 GHz.
What do the CW641 speed figures mean?
NXP specified a peak PHY rate of 4.8 Gbps and more than 4 Gbps of user data throughput, along with support for 160 MHz channels. These are published specifications from NXP’s 2021 announcement, also reported by EE Times—not independent test results or a promise of the speed a single client will see.

PHY rate is the theoretical link rate at the Wi‑Fi radio layer. It is not the same as useful application throughput: protocol overhead, signal conditions, client capability, interference, channel availability and the wired internet or backhaul connection all affect delivered performance. The quoted figures should therefore be read as peak component specifications, not as a speed guarantee for a home network.
How CW641 compares with NXP’s IW623
The IW623 is a separate NXP product, not another name for CW641. NXP’s current IW623 documentation describes a 2×2 tri-band Wi‑Fi 6E and Bluetooth/BLE SoC. Its fact sheet also lists MU‑MIMO, OFDMA, target wake time, Bluetooth LE Audio, integrated amplifiers, coexistence arbitration and hardware-backed security. NXP positions the IW623 for high-concurrency industrial and commercial networks.

What can a 6 GHz tri-band access point help with?
NXP names home mesh networking, high-resolution music and video streaming, online gaming, video calls, digital downloads and large web content as target use cases. The potential benefit is additional capacity for compatible Wi‑Fi 6E clients, particularly when 2.4 and 5 GHz networks are busy. Whether it improves a particular connection depends on the client device, regional spectrum rules, available channels, backhaul capacity and the access point’s overall design.

- A device must support Wi‑Fi 6E to use the 6 GHz band; tri-band capability in an access point alone does not make older clients 6 GHz-capable.
- Mesh performance depends on the mesh system’s backhaul and topology as well as its radio bands.
- Local regulations affect which 6 GHz channels and operating conditions are available, so support should be checked for the intended country.
Which 6 GHz access point should you buy?
The CW641 announcement describes silicon for manufacturers, not a consumer product recommendation. The announcement and cited product details do not identify a specific retail access point using CW641, so the chip name alone cannot tell a buyer which device to purchase.
For a finished product, search for a “Wi‑Fi 6E tri-band access point” and check the manufacturer’s specifications for the details that affect your network:

- The XE3-4 is fully backward compatible with existing Wi-Fi technology, enabling simultaneous support of new high speed clients, legacy clients, low-bitrate IoT devices, and more in a single wireless infrastructure.
- Band and regional support: Confirm 2.4, 5 and 6 GHz operation is supported in your country and that your clients can use 6 GHz.
- Streams and channel width: Compare the access point’s client-facing radio specifications, rather than relying on a SoC peak PHY rate alone.
- Capacity and coexistence: Look for information about simultaneous-client performance and how the design manages interference among radios and other devices.
- Network fit: Check wired ports, internet service, mesh backhaul and placement; a fast radio cannot exceed the limits of its wired connection or network layout.
- Security and support: Verify the finished product’s security features, software support and update policy. A chip-level feature is not proof that a particular access point implements or exposes it.
Unless an access-point maker publishes its component list, do not assume a product contains CW641. NXP’s SoC is an engineering component typically sourced through electronics distribution, while consumers shop for complete access points or gateways.
