For most AI-inference systems, buy a proven enterprise NVMe SSD first. It offers mature drivers, predictable latency, broad software compatibility and strong throughput for model loading, checkpoints, retrieval data and ordinary KV-cache tiers. A computational-storage drive (CSD) becomes compelling when measurements show that host-CPU work, PCIe or network traffic, compression, filtering, metadata processing or storage-backed context reuse is limiting inference. A CSD moves selected processing closer to flash; it does not replace the GPU that runs neural-network layers.
What the two drive types actually do
Conventional enterprise NVMe SSD
An enterprise NVMe SSD is a storage device accessed through the standard NVMe protocol and operating-system drivers. The host CPU, GPU, network adapters and application software perform preprocessing, decompression, filtering, metadata work and orchestration. The drive supplies blocks or files quickly and consistently, while the rest of the inference stack decides what to do with them.
That arrangement is usually the safest baseline for serving systems. It supports model loading, tokenizer and vocabulary files, vector indexes, retrieval documents, checkpoints, logs and temporary data without requiring a special programming model. NVIDIA’s 2023 guidance describes submillisecond storage and GPUDirect Storage paths between GPU memory and local NVMe or NVMe-over-Fabrics storage as useful for real-time inference, provided the complete path is engineered correctly.

A CSD combines flash with processors or accelerators that execute selected operations near the data. Instead of transferring every byte to the host before processing, a supported function can run inside the drive and return a smaller or transformed result. Examples may include compression and decompression, filtering, metadata handling or other I/O-heavy operations exposed by the drive’s firmware and APIs.

Samsung’s 2024 SmartSSD brief characterizes its platform as programmable and lists AI/ML inference as an application. ScaleFlux describes its CSD3000 as an NVMe computational-storage SSD with dedicated engines for storage processing. Those descriptions establish the architecture, not a universal speedup: acceleration depends on the exact operation, data format, software integration and concurrency your application uses.
Which one is better? Use the bottleneck, not the interface label
The drive’s PCIe generation or headline bandwidth cannot answer the buying question by itself. Measure the entire path from storage to GPU and back through any network or fabric. A faster SSD cannot fix a saturated CPU, an undersized PCIe link, a congested network, a cache-miss-heavy retrieval pipeline or a GPU that is already busy with model execution.
| Inference requirement | Conventional NVMe SSD | Computational-storage drive |
|---|---|---|
| Loading model weights and tokenizer files | Strong default; standard sequential reads and mature tooling | Usually unnecessary unless loading includes supported transformation work |
| Large sequential reads and checkpoint writes | Broad compatibility and predictable sustained throughput | Can help when compression or data reduction is part of the supported path |
| Vector or retrieval reads | Works with ordinary databases and index formats | Potential benefit when filtering or metadata processing is demonstrably CPU-bound |
| KV-cache storage tier | Suitable when latency, bandwidth and host paths meet the reuse pattern | Worth a pilot only when cache movement or processing is the measured bottleneck |
| Host-CPU utilization | All preprocessing remains on host or another accelerator | May reduce CPU work for functions implemented by the drive |
| Software and driver compatibility | Standard NVMe stack; widest support | Often uses NVMe drivers, but accelerated functions require vendor APIs or supported formats |
| Procurement and qualification | Large, familiar enterprise market | Smaller specialist pool and more workload-specific validation |
Choose NVMe when your dominant work is ordinary reading and writing and the host path is not saturated. Choose or pilot a CSD when profiling identifies a supported near-data operation that consumes enough CPU, PCIe, network capacity or power to justify the added qualification effort.

Where a normal NVMe SSD is the better engineering choice
Model loading and cold starts
Large language models and other neural networks often read many gigabytes of weights during process startup, model replacement or autoscaling. Enterprise NVMe provides high sustained reads, predictable queue behavior and standard filesystem and direct-I/O support. If the GPU is waiting because the storage link or network is slow, improving the entire read path can reduce time to first token; replacing a healthy SSD with a CSD does not automatically do so.

Checkpoints and ordinary data pipelines
Training-adjacent inference services may write checkpoints, adapters, logs or intermediate artifacts. Standard NVMe is straightforward to monitor, replicate and replace. It is also a sensible tier for retrieval corpora and indexes when indexing and filtering already run efficiently on the host or database accelerator.
Broad compatibility and predictable operations
Conventional drives work with the standard NVMe driver stack, common monitoring tools and established RAID, namespace and failure-replacement procedures. This matters when a service must run across several server generations, operating systems or orchestration environments. The larger qualification pool can lower integration and spares risk even when a CSD has attractive specifications.
When computational storage can improve inference
CPU-bound preprocessing
If decompression, deduplication, filtering, metadata parsing or format conversion consumes host cores while GPUs are idle, moving a supported operation into the storage device can reduce CPU contention. The gain is workload-specific: unsupported codecs, custom kernels or arbitrary model layers still execute elsewhere.

Excessive data movement
A CSD can return only the records or transformed data needed by the next stage, reducing transfers over PCIe or a storage network. This is most useful when raw data is much larger than the selected result and the drive’s engines understand the relevant layout. If nearly every byte must reach the GPU unchanged, near-data processing has little to remove.

Power and density objectives
Reducing host processing or network traffic may improve energy efficiency and rack-level density. ScaleFlux’s 2026 product page claims more than 20-times the capacity density per rack unit versus 3.5-inch hard drives, four-times the performance per watt versus other PCIe 5 SSDs and six-times the endurance versus similar-capacity SSDs. These are vendor comparisons, not independent, apples-to-apples results for every inference workload; validate them under your own duty cycle.
Why a CSD is not a GPU replacement
Storage-side processors are designed for selected data-movement and storage-processing functions. They do not execute arbitrary transformer layers at GPU performance, provide equivalent high-bandwidth memory or replace CUDA-style model acceleration. A CSD can shorten the path to a GPU or reduce work around the model, but the GPU (or another model accelerator) still performs the neural-network computation.
Specialized hardware also narrows the set of qualified servers, firmware versions, APIs and support procedures. Treat a CSD as a coprocessor for specific pipeline stages, not as a general-purpose accelerator that makes every inference operation faster.
KV-cache offload: when it is worth evaluating
What offload changes
The key-value cache stores attention state from earlier tokens so later decoding steps do not recompute the same context. GPU-attached memory is limited and expensive, so a serving system may move selected cache data to host memory, local NVMe or networked storage. Offload can permit longer contexts, more concurrent sessions or better GPU utilization, but every miss or transfer adds latency.

Why access size and topology matter
Samsung’s 2026 PM1753 evaluation describes storage-backed inference and explains that reusable KV-cache data can be moved beyond constrained GPU-attached memory. It notes that large chunks may move as sessions shift across GPUs. Therefore, do not assume that every cache access is a tiny random read. Benchmark the actual chunk size, reuse distance, concurrency, cache-hit rate, GPU topology, PCIe layout and network path.
Signals that justify a pilot
- GPU memory pressure causes eviction or prevents the desired context length.
- Sessions revisit context often enough for a cache hit to repay storage-transfer latency.
- GPU utilization falls while CPUs or storage-network links are busy moving cache data.
- Measurements show that cache traffic, rather than model execution, dominates tail latency or cost.
If the cache is rarely reused, sessions are short or the model is already compute-bound, offload usually adds complexity without improving user-visible latency. A conventional NVMe tier can be entirely adequate when its latency and bandwidth meet the measured cache pattern.
How to benchmark the decision correctly
Run both drive types through the same server, GPU, software build, data set and network topology. A synthetic sequential-read result is not an inference benchmark. NVIDIA’s certified-storage program evaluates storage for training, fine-tuning, inference and KV-cache workloads, including throughput, latency, reliability, scaling and GPU-utilization behavior. Use that whole-system approach for your own acceptance test.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Define the serving scenarios. Include cold model load, warm start, retrieval-augmented prompts, long-context requests, concurrent sessions, checkpoint activity and failover or drive replacement.
- Instrument every boundary. Record time to first token, inter-token latency, tokens per second, p50/p95/p99 latency, GPU utilization and memory pressure, host CPU utilization, PCIe throughput, network bytes, storage queue depth and power.
- Measure cache behavior. For KV-cache tests, vary cache-hit rate, chunk size, reuse distance, context length, number of GPUs and session migration pattern. Report misses separately from hits.
- Test supported CSD functions explicitly. Confirm which compression, filtering, metadata or transformation operations are executed on the drive, which data formats are accepted and what happens when a function is unsupported.
- Stress endurance and recovery. Run the intended write rate, mixed read/write load, firmware update path, namespace behavior, power-loss protection and drive-failure recovery. Record performance after the device is full or heavily fragmented.
- Compare cost per useful output. Include drive price, host CPU savings, network capacity, power, licensing, engineering time, spares and operational support. Divide by delivered tokens per second or completed requests at the required tail-latency target.
Specifications that matter more than headline bandwidth
- End-to-end latency: Measure storage-to-GPU completion time, not only the device’s internal read latency.
- Sustained throughput: Verify performance over the full model load or cache-transfer interval, including thermal throttling and mixed workloads.
- Small-I/O behavior: Use the request sizes generated by your runtime; a large-block result may not predict metadata or cache performance.
- CPU and GPU utilization: A drive is helping only if it reduces a bottleneck without starving the GPU elsewhere.
- Data movement: Count PCIe and network bytes before and after any near-data function.
- Supported functions and APIs: List exact codecs, filters, formats, SDKs and fallback behavior.
- Endurance and power: Match write ratings and power-loss protection to cache churn, checkpoint frequency and service-level objectives.
- Capacity and expansion: Account for model versions, replicas, indexes, cache headroom and rebuild time.
- Reliability and recovery: Verify telemetry, firmware support, replacement procedures and behavior during a failed drive or interrupted operation.
Software, driver and integration considerations
ScaleFlux states that its drives are natively NVMe and use standard NVMe drivers available with common operating systems. That lowers basic attachment friction, but transparent attachment does not mean every application receives acceleration automatically. The application must issue supported operations, use compatible data layouts or invoke the vendor’s software interface where required.
Best Value
- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
Before deployment, document the minimum operating-system and kernel versions, firmware requirements, SDK or runtime dependencies, container access, orchestration support, observability hooks and fallback path. A production service should continue operating—possibly at lower efficiency—if the accelerated function is unavailable or a drive is replaced with a standard NVMe device.
Common failure modes and fixes
“The new drive has higher PCIe bandwidth, but tokens per second did not improve.”
Check whether model execution, CPU preprocessing, network transfer or synchronization is the actual limiter. Compare GPU utilization and end-to-end stage timings before changing storage again.
“The CSD helps a microbenchmark but not production traffic.”
Verify that production data uses the accelerated format and operation. Measure mixed reads and writes, realistic queue depth, concurrent sessions and cache misses; unsupported requests may silently fall back to host processing.
“KV-cache offload raises tail latency.”
Inspect cache-hit rate, chunk size, session migration and network hops. Increase locality, reserve more GPU or host memory, change chunking or restrict offload to cold or low-priority sessions if the transfer cost exceeds the recomputation cost.
“The host CPU remains saturated after deploying a CSD.”
Profile decompression, parsing, scheduling and unsupported filters separately. Only the functions implemented and invoked on the drive can move off the CPU; custom preprocessing may require a different accelerator or software redesign.
“Operations cannot replace or monitor the specialized drive.”
Require standard health telemetry, documented firmware procedures, spare availability and a tested fallback. If those controls are weaker than your service-level requirements, the operational risk can outweigh a measured performance gain.
Practical decision framework
Buy conventional enterprise NVMe when
- The workload is dominated by model loading, large sequential reads, ordinary checkpointing or general-purpose retrieval.
- Host CPU, PCIe and network utilization are below the point of contention.
- You need the broadest compatibility and simplest replacement process.
- KV-cache storage is a tiering requirement, but profiling shows no storage-processing bottleneck.
Pilot a CSD when
- Profiling identifies CPU, PCIe, network or storage-processing overhead that matches a documented drive function.
- Data reduction or filtering can happen before transfer without changing model quality.
- KV-cache reuse is high and cache movement is measurable in latency or capacity limits.
- You can run workload-level tests and maintain a standard-NVMe fallback.
Reject a CSD for this deployment when
- The proposed benefit is only a higher interface-speed number.
- The workload requires arbitrary model computation rather than supported near-data operations.
- The team cannot instrument GPU starvation, cache hits, CPU time and tail latency.
- Specialized software, firmware or support requirements exceed the value of the measured gain.
Bottom line for an AI-inference purchase
Start with an enterprise NVMe SSD and validate the complete GPU, host, PCIe, network and storage path. It is the right answer for most model loads, checkpoints, retrieval data and straightforward cache tiers. Move to a computational-storage drive only after profiling proves that a supported near-data function removes a real bottleneck. For KV-cache offload, benchmark reuse, chunk size, concurrency, GPU placement and network topology rather than assuming that storage alone will reduce latency. The winning device is the one that delivers the required tail latency and throughput at acceptable CPU use, power, endurance, recovery risk and total cost—not the one with the most impressive interface specification.
