The RTX 5090 uses a revised 12V-2×6 power connector, and NVIDIA said it expected the connector-melting problem associated with some RTX 4090 setups not to recur. That is a confidence claim, not a guarantee: the RTX 5090 is rated at 575 W, close to the connector’s 600 W sustained rating, and installation, cabling and power delivery still matter.

What did NVIDIA promise about the RTX 5090?

On January 22, 2025, PCWorld reported NVIDIA representatives saying that changes to the connector were expected to prevent the RTX 4090-era phenomenon. Their statement was: “It is expected that such a phenomenon will not occur in the RTX 50 series. We made some changes to the connector to respond to the issue at the time, and now, about two years later, I understand that such problems do not occur.” Tom’s Hardware reported the same exchange at an RTX AI Day and identified NVIDIA participants Jeff Yen, Sean Cleveland and Sunwook Kim.

The wording matters: NVIDIA said the problem was not expected to happen, rather than guaranteeing that no connector could ever overheat. The RTX 5090 also draws more board power than the RTX 4090: 575 W versus 450 W, as reported by Tom’s Hardware. A revised connector addresses design changes; it does not make a high-current connection immune to poor seating, cable strain or a faulty connection.

What changed, and why can overheating still happen?

The RTX 50 series uses 12V-2×6

The RTX 50 generation uses the revised 16-pin 12V-2×6 connector. The change was made in response to concerns about the earlier connector, but the connector still has to carry substantial current safely. Tom’s Hardware describes its sustained rating as 600 W; at the RTX 5090’s 575 W board power, the difference is only 25 W.

Connection quality still matters

Reported contributors to overheating include a plug that is not fully inserted, sharp bending or strain close to the connector, and current becoming concentrated on individual pins. Tom’s Hardware notes that many graphics cards monitor the overall 12 V signal but do not actively rebalance current between individual pins. A problem affecting one contact therefore may not be corrected simply because the card monitors the supply as a whole.

What power supply and cable does an RTX 5090 need?

NVIDIA’s GeForce RTX 5090 User Guide specifies a 1000 W minimum system power supply. It lists two supported ways to power the card:

Connection method What NVIDIA specifies Important qualification
Direct PCIe Gen 5 16-pin cable One cable rated for 600 W or more Use a cable explicitly compatible with the PSU and GPU.
Included adapter At least four independent 8-pin PCIe cables connected to the adapter For the Founders Edition, NVIDIA says to use only the included adapter. Do not treat a single cable with multiple plugs as four independent cables.

The 1000 W figure is NVIDIA’s stated minimum system PSU rating, not a promise that every 1000 W unit or cable arrangement is suitable. Check the PSU maker’s compatibility information as well as the GPU guide. For replacement cables, use one supplied by the PSU manufacturer or a reputable third-party cable explicitly listed as compatible with the exact PSU model; modular PSU cables are not universally interchangeable.

How should you install the RTX 5090 power connector?

  1. Choose a supported power path. Use a single 600 W-or-greater PCIe Gen 5 16-pin cable, or the included adapter with at least four independent 8-pin PCIe cables, as specified in NVIDIA’s GeForce RTX 5090 User Guide.
  2. Connect the adapter to the card first if using it. NVIDIA specifies connecting the adapter to the card before attaching its PCIe power cables. Founders Edition owners should use the adapter included with the card.
  3. Push the 16-pin plug fully into the socket. Check that it is completely inserted and seated flush, as NVIDIA instructs. Do not rely on a quick visual glance if the plug still feels loose or sits unevenly.
  4. Route the cable without pulling or sharply bending it at the plug. Tom’s Hardware relays Seasonic guidance to keep bends at least 35 mm from the connector. Make sure the case side panel does not press against the plug or force the cable sideways.
  5. Check the connection again after routing. Cable management can shift a plug that was seated before the cable was bent or the panel was fitted. Confirm it remains flush and unstressed.

Does a yellow-tipped 12V-2×6 cable mean it is safe?

No appearance alone can establish that a connection is safe. A yellow-tipped cable is not a substitute for checking compatibility, full insertion and cable routing. TechSpot reported on April 30, 2025, that an MSI RTX 5090 owner’s yellow-tipped 12V-2×6 cable appeared burned and slightly melted. The card was powered by a Super Flower 1300 W ATX 3.1 PSU; the report said the owner had played Black Desert at about 400 W for roughly two hours. TechSpot also cautioned that incorrect seating could not be ruled out.

That report is a case, not a controlled test or a measurement of how often failures occur. It shows that the revised connector is not proof against every incident; it does not show that RTX 5090 connectors generally fail or identify a population-level failure rate.

Can you monitor connector temperature or pin current?

Optional devices such as the Thermal Grizzly WireView Pro can report current and temperature for individual pins and sound an alarm. That information may help identify an abnormal condition, but the device adds another component to the power path. It does not replace a compatible PSU and cable, careful installation or an undisturbed connection.

  • 【Important Tips】For RTX 50 series mid-to-high-end graphics cards, which can experience extreme power spikes under load, we recommend using a PSU compliant with ATX 3.0/3.1 standards and provide sufficient wattage. This ensures greater stability and helps avoid issues such as over-current protection triggers or voltage drops, which may lead to black screens or system restarts. (Note: For recommended PSU wattage by 50-series model, see the purchase guide images below)

What should you do if the connector looks damaged?

If you see burning, melting or other visible damage, stop using the affected power connection rather than continuing to test it under load. Do not reuse a visibly damaged cable or plug. Contact the graphics-card or PSU manufacturer for guidance on inspection and replacement, and use only a cable confirmed compatible with the PSU model. The reported case does not establish a single cause, so a visual symptom alone cannot tell you whether the cable, seating or another part of the connection was responsible.
