You can add HDR-style output to many SDR games with NVIDIA’s official RTX HDR feature, or with the earlier unofficial NVTrueHDR utility. RTX HDR uses AI to infer HDR information from an SDR image; it does not turn a game into a native HDR title. You need an HDR-capable display, Windows 11, and a GeForce RTX 20-series-or-newer GPU for the setup documented in February 2024.

What RTX HDR does—and what it does not do

Games with no HDR option can still be displayed with HDR processing applied to their SDR image. NVIDIA’s RTX HDR is an AI filter that generates HDR information from that image. The result depends on what the game outputs and how the filter handles it; it is not the same as a game rendering directly through a native HDR pipeline.

The original workaround was NVTrueHDR, an unofficial Nexus Mods utility. PC Gamer reported in 2024 that it toggled hidden “trueHDR” profile settings in NVIDIA’s GeForce drivers after RTX Video HDR version 551.23. NVIDIA later made the capability available as RTX HDR in the NVIDIA App, so most readers looking for the feature should start with NVIDIA’s app rather than an unofficial utility.

What you need

PC Gamer’s February 22, 2024 setup checklist specified the following requirements. These are publication-era details, not confirmation that every version number or menu label remains current in 2026.

  • Shadow Boost Technology: Enhances image details in dark areas, brightening scenes without over-exposing bright areas for better visibility during gameplay
  • Package Contents: Includes DisplayPort cable, L-shaped Screwdriver, Power cord, Quick start guide, and Warranty Card
  • An HDR-capable monitor or display.
  • A GeForce RTX 20-series-or-newer GPU.
  • Windows 11, with HDR enabled in Windows display settings.
  • The NVIDIA App and GeForce driver 551.52, as specified in that 2024 checklist.
  • Windows Auto HDR turned off while using RTX HDR.

How to enable RTX HDR

  1. Prepare Windows: In Windows 11 display settings, enable HDR for the display you will use. Turn off Windows Auto HDR, because the documented RTX HDR setup requires it to be disabled.
  2. Open NVIDIA App settings: Go to the Graphics tab. The 2024 setup article describes enabling RTX HDR globally or for an individual game. Choose per-game control if you want to limit the filter to selected titles.
  3. Launch the game in a supported display mode: Use fullscreen mode as directed by the February 2024 instructions. PCGamingWiki’s Windows 11 compatibility reference lists fullscreen-exclusive or borderless presentation for the RTX HDR path.
  4. Apply the setting in the overlay: Open the in-game NVIDIA overlay and apply RTX HDR. Menu names and locations can change between NVIDIA App releases, so the 2024 instructions should not be treated as a guarantee of the current interface.
  5. Check the result in the game: Look at bright highlights, dark areas, and the interface. If the picture appears washed out, clipped, or otherwise wrong, disable RTX HDR for that game and compare with its normal SDR output.

The driver numbers above explain the setup reported at the time; they are not a recommendation to install an old driver in 2026. Use a currently supported NVIDIA App and driver, and consult NVIDIA’s current release information for present-day requirements.

Compatibility and alternatives

Compatibility depends on the rendering API and how a game presents its image. The following comparison reflects the documented descriptions from the 2024 PC Gamer report and PCGamingWiki; unsupported details are marked rather than inferred.

Method GPU and Windows Graphics APIs and presentation How it works and setup Online-game, maintenance, and safety notes
NVIDIA RTX HDR The February 2024 setup lists an RTX 20-series-or-newer GeForce GPU and Windows 11. PC Gamer describes DirectX 9 or newer and Vulkan. PCGamingWiki lists DX9, DX10, DX11, DX12, Vulkan, and OpenGL on Windows 11, with fullscreen-exclusive or borderless presentation. An AI post-process applied to an SDR image. The NVIDIA App’s Graphics tab provides global or per-game enablement; the documented setup applies it through the in-game overlay. Anti-cheat compatibility is not stated in the cited coverage. NVIDIA’s app is the official route, but current version support and interface details should be checked against NVIDIA’s current documentation.
NVTrueHDR Uses NVIDIA driver profiles; the cited account ties the hidden settings to GeForce driver 551.23 and RTX Video HDR. A separate current Windows requirement is not stated by PC Gamer. Its reported function is to toggle the same hidden profile settings used by the HDR feature. A separate API and presentation-mode matrix is not stated by PC Gamer. An unofficial utility that changes driver profile settings; it is not NVIDIA’s app feature. Anti-cheat compatibility and current maintenance status are not stated by PC Gamer. The article records positive user reports as well as browser executable-file flags; it does not provide an independent security audit.
Special K HDR Retrofit GPU dependence and Windows version are not stated in PCGamingWiki’s cited description. PCGamingWiki describes it for most DirectX 11–12 games. A separate modding route that retrofits the HDR pipeline and can require game-specific configuration; it is not the same simple driver-level filter as RTX HDR. Anti-cheat compatibility and current maintenance or safety status are not stated in PCGamingWiki’s cited description. Check the specific game and mod documentation before using it online.
Windows Auto HDR The cited sources do not establish a GPU requirement or a complete Windows-version compatibility matrix for this comparison. API coverage is not stated in the cited sources. A Windows alternative for supported SDR games, rather than NVIDIA’s RTX HDR filter. It must be disabled for the documented RTX HDR setup. Anti-cheat compatibility and current maintenance or safety details are not stated in the cited sources.

Choosing the right method

Use RTX HDR first if you have compatible NVIDIA hardware

It is the clearest starting point when you have an RTX 20-series-or-newer GeForce card, Windows 11, and an HDR display. It is NVIDIA’s supported app-based route in the cited coverage, and its listed API coverage is broader than the cited Special K HDR Retrofit description.

Consider Special K for a specific DirectX 11 or 12 game

Special K is a separate, more game-specific retrofit route. Its configuration may suit a title where a simple post-process is unsatisfactory, but the cited compatibility description covers most DirectX 11–12 games rather than every game or API.

Treat NVTrueHDR downloads cautiously

NVTrueHDR was an unofficial way to expose the hidden driver setting. PC Gamer noted browser flags on the executable and the author’s effort to prevent further flags, but the article did not include an independent security audit. Those reports are not proof that a file is malicious or safe. Prefer the NVIDIA App’s official RTX HDR feature when available, and do not run an unofficial executable unless you can establish its provenance and accept the risk.

What can go wrong

  • No HDR effect or option: Confirm the display supports HDR, Windows HDR is enabled, the game is in a supported presentation mode, and RTX HDR is enabled for the correct profile or game.
  • Conflicting HDR processing: Turn off Windows Auto HDR when using RTX HDR, as required by the documented setup.
  • Unexpected image quality: Because the filter infers HDR from SDR, it may not handle every game’s interface, tone mapping, or image presentation well. Disable it for titles where highlights, shadows, or UI elements look worse.
  • Unclear current support: The cited driver versions and setup steps date to February 2024. They do not establish current 2026 driver requirements, NVIDIA App labels, or support status; do not assume those historical versions are current.

Does RTX HDR work in every game?

No. The cited descriptions cover a range of APIs and fullscreen or borderless modes, not universal compatibility. A game can render through a listed API and still produce unsatisfactory results because RTX HDR processes the image after it has been rendered.

Is NVTrueHDR safe?

The available account is not an independent security assessment. PC Gamer reported browser executable-file flags and user reports, but that does not establish whether a particular download is safe. The official RTX HDR feature in NVIDIA App is the lower-risk choice when it is available to you.
