NVIDIA’s May 2022 announcement made the Linux kernel modules for its GPU driver available under dual MIT/GPLv2 licensing, starting with driver release R515. It did not open the full NVIDIA Linux driver: CUDA and other user-space components remained closed. NVIDIA also named Canonical, Red Hat, and SUSE as partners for packaging, deployment, and support—not as proof that NVIDIA’s driver had been merged into the Linux kernel.

What NVIDIA made open source

The release covers the Linux kernel-space modules: the part of the driver that runs in the operating-system kernel. NVIDIA’s announcement said the source publication began with R515 on May 19, 2022, under a dual MIT/GPLv2 license.

The kernel modules work with NVIDIA firmware and user-space driver components. Those other pieces—including CUDA—were not made open source by the announcement. NVIDIA’s source repository also requires the kernel modules, GSP firmware, and user-space components to be from corresponding driver versions.

What “partners for upstreaming” meant

NVIDIA named Canonical, Red Hat, and SUSE as partners on packaging, deployment, and support models. Their statements in the May 2022 announcement described collaboration and distribution plans; they do not mean those companies jointly authored or merged NVIDIA’s driver into the upstream Linux kernel.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

The announcement described future work, not a completed merge

NVIDIA said the then-current code did not follow Linux kernel design conventions and was “not a candidate for Linux upstream.” It said it planned to work with the kernel community and distribution partners on an upstream approach. That is a plan to collaborate, not evidence of mainline acceptance. The cited NVIDIA announcements and documentation do not establish that NVIDIA’s own kernel modules were subsequently accepted into mainline Linux.

A possible benefit for Nouveau is separate

NVIDIA also said the published source could help developers improve Nouveau, the in-tree Linux driver, for example by providing a reference for shared firmware functions such as clock and thermal management. That potential benefit does not amount to merging NVIDIA’s own driver into the kernel.

Which GPUs can use the open modules?

NVIDIA’s current repository says the open modules support Turing and later GPUs. Its July 17, 2024 transition post recommends them for Turing, Ampere, Ada Lovelace, and Hopper. The same post says Maxwell, Pascal, and Volta are incompatible with the open modules, and advises using the proprietary module flavor for those GPUs. It says Grace Hopper and Blackwell platforms require the open flavor because the proprietary modules are unsupported there.

GPU generation or platform NVIDIA guidance
Maxwell, Pascal, or Volta Use the proprietary kernel-module flavor; these generations are incompatible with the open flavor.
Turing, Ampere, Ada Lovelace, or Hopper NVIDIA recommends the open kernel-module flavor.
Grace Hopper or Blackwell The open flavor is required; NVIDIA says the proprietary modules are unsupported on these platforms.
Systems mixing older and newer GPU generations NVIDIA advises using the proprietary flavor for mixed-generation systems.

These recommendations distinguish GPU-generation compatibility from the quality labels NVIDIA used at launch. In May 2022, NVIDIA described support for data-center Turing and Ampere as production-ready, while GeForce and Workstation support was alpha quality. Those were launch-era labels, not a current blanket rating. Check NVIDIA’s documentation for the exact GPU model and feature support before choosing a module flavor.

Open versus proprietary kernel modules

The choice is between kernel-module flavors, not between an entirely open and entirely closed driver stack. NVIDIA says the user-space components are identical between the two flavors, and the flavors are mutually exclusive: a system uses one or the other.

Consideration Open kernel modules Proprietary kernel modules
GPU compatibility Turing and later; required for Grace Hopper and Blackwell according to NVIDIA. Needed for Maxwell, Pascal, and Volta; NVIDIA also advises this flavor for mixed old-and-new GPU systems.
Open-only features documented by NVIDIA Includes NVIDIA Confidential Computing, GPUDirect Storage, HMM, CPU affinity for GPU fault handlers, and DMABUF support for CUDA allocations in the documented driver release. The cited versioned documentation does not list these features as available in this flavor.
Firmware and user-space components Must match the kernel-module release version. User-space components are identical to those used with the open flavor, according to NVIDIA.
Compatibility between flavors Cannot be installed alongside the proprietary kernel-module flavor. Cannot be installed alongside the open kernel-module flavor.

The open-only feature list and the caveats below come from NVIDIA’s versioned driver documentation; they should not be read as independent benchmark results or as guarantees for every release.

Documented caveats

When GSP firmware mode is disabled, NVIDIA’s documentation lists slower GPU initialization, potentially longer entry and exit latencies for power-saving modes, and marginal power-consumption impacts in some scenarios. In the documented release, Run Time D3 is supported only on Ampere and newer GPUs.

Installing the open modules

NVIDIA’s current installation guide recommends using the Linux distribution’s package manager. Its guide, last updated September 23, 2026, lists these package commands for the specified distribution families:

Building from source is an advanced route

NVIDIA’s source repository documents make modules and make modules_install for building and installing modules. The interface layer must be built with the target kernel’s toolchain, and existing NVIDIA kernel modules must be removed first. Because the procedure depends on the target kernel and environment, follow NVIDIA’s current build instructions rather than treating those commands as a complete, universal installation recipe.

How the rollout changed after 2022

At launch in May 2022, NVIDIA said customers with Turing and Ampere data-center GPUs could choose between open and proprietary kernel modules, while users with pre-Turing GPUs would remain on the proprietary modules. The open modules were initially presented as production-ready for data-center Turing and Ampere, with GeForce and Workstation support at alpha quality.

On July 17, 2024, NVIDIA said R560 would make the open kernel-module flavor the default across its installation methods, while retaining ways to select proprietary modules where supported. NVIDIA described that transition as following work on HMM, confidential computing, and coherent memory for Grace platforms. Default selection did not change which parts of the driver were open source.

As of October 4, 2026, NVIDIA’s live source repository identifies its source snapshot as version 615.71.09. That is a dated repository snapshot, not a promise that every distribution offers that version or that it is the right package for every system.

What the announcement changed—and what it did not

The practical change was that developers and distributions could inspect and work with the Linux kernel-module source under MIT/GPLv2 terms, while NVIDIA continued to provide closed user-space components. Canonical, Red Hat, and SUSE were named as collaborators on distribution and support work. NVIDIA’s upstreaming language remained a stated direction of work, not confirmation that its driver had entered mainline Linux.
