There is no universal winner. Energy efficiency depends on the exact model, precision, latency target, concurrency, software stack, accelerator count and the power boundary you measure. NVIDIA says a GB200 NVL72 rack can deliver 25× more performance at the same power as H100 air-cooled infrastructure, but that is a vendor, workload-specific comparison—not a neutral GB200-versus-AMD Instinct joules-per-token result. AMD’s MI350X and MI355X instead emphasize 288 GB of HBM3E, 8 TB/s memory bandwidth and MXFP4/MXFP6 support, features that can reduce memory traffic or model sharding in suitable workloads.

For a defensible buying decision, measure the same model and quality target on both platforms and report output tokens per joule with identical precision, latency, concurrency, software versions and whole-system power accounting.

What is actually being compared?

“Grace Blackwell” and “AMD Instinct” are not single chips with one fixed efficiency rating. GB200 NVL72 is a rack-scale system combining Grace CPUs with Blackwell GPUs. NVIDIA’s DGX GB200 configuration contains 72 Blackwell GPUs and 36 Grace CPUs, with a listed 1,440 PFLOPS of FP4 Tensor Core performance. AMD’s Instinct name covers several generations and system designs, including MI325X, MI350X and MI355X accelerators that may be installed in eight-GPU servers or larger clusters.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That difference in scope matters. A rack-level GB200 result includes CPU, GPU, NVLink-domain communication and the infrastructure needed to operate 72 GPUs. An MI355X result could describe one accelerator, an eight-GPU node or a multi-node deployment. Comparing a rack platform with an individual accelerator, or comparing a low-precision result on one side with a higher-precision result on the other, can produce a precise-looking but meaningless energy number.

The useful question is therefore not “Which architecture is most efficient?” It is “Which complete configuration produces the required quality and latency for my workload with the fewest joules?”

Why NVIDIA’s “25× at the same power” claim is not an AMD verdict

NVIDIA states that, compared with H100 air-cooled infrastructure, GB200 delivers “25x more performance at the same power, while reducing water consumption.” The claim is useful for understanding the intended generational gain over an H100 deployment, but it does not establish that GB200 uses less electricity than MI355X.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Several variables are embedded in that statement: the workload, the definition of performance, the H100 system being used as the baseline, the software release, the number of accelerators and the measured power boundary. “Same power” does not mean the same number of GPUs, the same rack design or the same output quality. A vendor claim can be accurate within its stated test while still being unsuitable for cross-vendor purchasing.

Use the 25× figure as a cited NVIDIA product claim and a signal that rack-scale design can change the performance-per-watt equation. Do not turn it into “Blackwell is 25× more energy-efficient than AMD Instinct.” No neutral publication in the available evidence reports matched GB200 and current-Instinct joules per token under identical conditions.

What AMD’s MI350X and MI355X design contributes

Large HBM capacity

AMD lists 288 GB of HBM3E and 8 TB/s of memory bandwidth for MI350X and MI355X. Capacity is an energy variable because a model that fits on fewer accelerators may require fewer interconnect transfers, fewer host links and less synchronization. Keeping a model on one device or one node can also simplify serving and reduce idle power in additional devices.

Capacity is not automatically efficiency. If a workload is compute-bound, extra HBM may not improve tokens per joule. If the server’s memory, networking or cooling overhead dominates, a large-memory accelerator can still consume more total energy than a smaller system that finishes the same request faster.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

MXFP4 and MXFP6 support

AMD says the MI350 series supports MXFP6 and MXFP4, low-precision formats intended to improve efficiency, bandwidth use and energy consumption. Lower precision can reduce the bytes moved and increase arithmetic throughput, but only if the model and quality target tolerate it. Accuracy, calibration, outlier handling, accumulation precision and kernel support must be held constant when comparing with Blackwell.

A low-precision throughput figure is not interchangeable with an FP8 or FP16 figure. AMD’s cited material reports 100,282 tokens per second for MI355X FP4 versus 32,028 tokens per second for MI325X FP8. Those numbers differ in both accelerator generation and precision, so they demonstrate the effect of a particular configuration rather than prove that MI355X delivers a specific joules-per-token advantage over Blackwell.

MI325X’s 1,000 W design point

AMD’s MI300 information lists a 1,000 W accelerator design point for MI325X and publishes theoretical precision figures while warning that actual performance varies with system configuration. Treat 1,000 W as an accelerator design target, not the electricity drawn by a complete server. Fans, CPUs, memory, storage, network adapters, voltage-conversion losses and cooling infrastructure all add to the facility load.

How to measure energy efficiency fairly

The most useful primary metric for language-model inference is output tokens per joule. NVIDIA defines inference energy efficiency as output tokens divided by GPU energy during profiling. For procurement, broaden the boundary so that the comparison reflects the electricity your facility must supply, then publish both GPU-only and whole-system figures.

  1. Choose one model and quality target. Use the same model weights, prompt set, output length, context length and acceptance criteria. If one platform uses a quantized checkpoint or a different calibration, document that difference rather than presenting the runs as equivalent.
  2. Fix precision and numerical behavior. Select FP4, FP6, FP8 or FP16 as appropriate, and keep it constant. Record accumulation precision, quantization scheme, sparsity and any outlier or calibration method.
  3. Set the same service objective. Define time to first token, inter-token latency, maximum tail latency and completion length. A system that produces more tokens per second by violating the latency target is not a fair replacement.
  4. Match concurrency and batching. Run the same request arrival pattern, batch limits and sequence-length distribution. Measure both single-stream and production-like concurrent serving because utilization changes power and efficiency.
  5. Use the same power boundary. At minimum, log accelerator power. For a deployment decision, also measure host CPUs, HBM and other memory, networking, storage, power supplies and cooling. State whether power is instantaneous, averaged over a run or converted from facility telemetry.
  6. Record software and firmware. Capture driver, runtime, compiler, kernel library, model server, operating-system and firmware versions. A kernel optimization or a different graph compiler can change both throughput and power.
  7. Report accelerator count and topology. State whether the result uses one device, an eight-GPU node, several nodes or a full GB200 NVL72 rack. Include interconnect type, link utilization and any communication overlap.
  8. Repeat and publish uncertainty. Warm up the model, run enough requests to reach steady state and report averages together with variation. Include idle and startup behavior if the service is lightly loaded.

MLPerf Power is a useful model for this discipline because it combines benchmark performance with measured power. MLPerf Inference is architecture-neutral and reproducible, but a reader must still inspect the exact scenario and submission details rather than comparing a headline score from one row with another.

Metrics that belong beside tokens per joule

Energy to train

Training efficiency is not the same as inference efficiency. Measure total energy to reach a specified validation loss or quality level, including checkpointing, evaluation and failed or restarted jobs. A platform that serves efficiently may have a different training profile because optimizer states, collective communication and scaling efficiency dominate.

Memory and communication energy

For large models, moving data can consume a substantial share of energy. Record whether weights, key-value caches and activations fit locally. GB200’s Grace-and-Blackwell design and NVLink domain may reduce communication overhead in a tightly coupled rack, while MI355X’s 288 GB HBM3E can reduce the number of devices needed for a model. These are plausible architectural advantages, not guaranteed energy wins; only a measured workload can quantify them.

Rack and facility power

Compare the complete deployment, not just a board’s thermal design point. Include rack power limits, power-distribution losses, fan power, liquid or air cooling and the facility overhead factor used by your data center. A dense rack can finish work quickly yet be unusable where electrical capacity or cooling is constrained.

Throughput at the required latency

Peak tokens per second can reward aggressive batching that is unsuitable for interactive applications. Plot tokens per joule at the concurrency and latency your users actually need. For offline summarization, high-throughput batching may be ideal; for a chat service, tail latency and time to first token can make a lower-peak system more efficient in practice.

Where each platform may have an advantage

When GB200 NVL72 is a strong candidate

  • You need a rack-scale system with tightly coupled CPU-GPU operation and a large NVLink communication domain.
  • Your model benefits from Blackwell’s supported low-precision and tensor-core execution paths, and the production software stack is already optimized for them.
  • You can use the rack’s density and cooling design, and your workload keeps enough of the 72 GPUs busy to avoid paying for idle capacity.
  • Your purchasing decision is based on measured whole-rack performance rather than a single accelerator’s board power.

When MI350X or MI355X may be attractive

  • The model benefits from 288 GB of HBM3E and 8 TB/s bandwidth, allowing fewer accelerators or less cross-device traffic.
  • MXFP4 or MXFP6 meets the application’s quality target and the required kernels are mature for your model server.
  • You are comparing eight-GPU nodes or a cluster configuration where memory capacity, rack density and acquisition options favor Instinct.
  • Your benchmark shows competitive tokens per joule at the exact concurrency and latency target, rather than only competitive peak throughput.

Software maturity is workload-specific. Verify operator coverage, quantization tools, attention and mixture-of-experts kernels, distributed collectives, monitoring and deployment support for the model you intend to run. A theoretical advantage that requires fallback kernels or excessive synchronization can disappear at system level.

A practical test plan for a procurement decision

Phase 1: Define the workload

Write down the model version, parameter count, context and output lengths, target quality, precision, sparsity policy, request mix, concurrency and latency limits. Include whether speculative decoding, prefix caching or continuous batching is allowed. These choices can change energy more than the accelerator label.

Phase 2: Build equivalent deployments

Use the same containerized model server where possible, or document platform-specific servers and compiler versions. Match the number of replicas, CPU resources, host memory and network fabric. Pin clocks only if you can apply the same policy meaningfully on both systems.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Phase 3: Measure at several loads

Run single-stream, moderate-concurrency and saturation tests. Capture time to first token, inter-token latency, throughput, accelerator utilization, memory use and power at each load. Include a long enough steady-state interval to avoid mistaking startup or thermal transients for normal operation.

Using 2 holes wire tray saves extra space, helps you easily cabling and wire protection. The mesh design is not easy to accumulate dust, but avoids safety accidents caused by messy wires.

Phase 4: Calculate and publish

For each run, calculate:

tokens per joule = generated output tokens ÷ measured energy in joules

Also report energy per request, energy per 1,000 tokens, 95th- and 99th-percentile latency, total accelerator count and the power boundary. Publish raw averages and the conditions that produced them. If one platform cannot run the same precision or model without a quality change, present separate qualified results instead of forcing a single ranking.

Common comparison mistakes

  • Equating FLOPS with efficiency: The DGX GB200 figure of 1,440 PFLOPS FP4 is theoretical peak capability, not delivered application throughput or joules per token.
  • Comparing unlike precision: MI355X FP4 and MI325X FP8 figures cannot establish a cross-vendor efficiency result.
  • Ignoring system scale: A 72-GPU rack and an eight-GPU node have different communication, cooling and idle-power behavior.
  • Using board power as facility power: The MI325X 1,000 W design point excludes the rest of the server and data center.
  • Changing quality targets: More aggressive quantization may raise throughput while lowering answer quality; the saved energy is not a win if the service requires retries or larger models.
  • Cherry-picking saturation: A benchmark at maximum throughput may not represent an interactive service with low concurrency.
  • Treating vendor claims as neutral tests: NVIDIA’s 25× statement is valuable context but remains a vendor comparison with H100 air-cooled infrastructure.

Decision framework

Your priority What to compare first Evidence to require
Interactive inference Tokens per joule at fixed time-to-first-token, tail latency and concurrency Steady-state whole-system power and identical quality target
Large-model fit HBM capacity, bandwidth and number of devices required Measured communication volume and energy after sharding
Rack deployment Throughput per rack, cooling and power-delivery limits Rack-level telemetry, including networking and cooling
Offline batch work Energy per completed job at maximum sustainable utilization Completion time, retries, utilization and batch policy
Training Energy to reach a defined quality or loss End-to-end measurements including communication and checkpointing

If you cannot run both systems, avoid claiming a winner. Use published MLPerf results to narrow candidates, then validate the exact model and software stack in a pilot. The absence of a matched public GB200-versus-MI355X joules-per-token result is itself a reason to keep the conclusion conditional.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Bottom line

GB200 NVL72 has a compelling vendor-reported efficiency gain over H100 air-cooled infrastructure and offers a tightly integrated rack-scale design. MI350X and MI355X bring substantial HBM3E capacity, 8 TB/s bandwidth and MXFP4/MXFP6 support that can reduce sharding or improve efficiency for compatible workloads. Neither set of specifications proves a universal advantage.

Choose the platform that delivers the required quality and latency with the lowest measured whole-system energy for your model. Use identical precision, concurrency, software conditions and power accounting, and report both single-node and rack-scale results. Until such a matched test exists, “more energy-efficient” is a workload-specific answer, not a permanent label for either Grace Blackwell or AMD Instinct.
