The GeForce RTX 4070 is broadly in RTX 3080 territory for rasterized gaming, but the match depends on the game and resolution. Reviews make it easiest to recommend for 1440p: it combines strong performance with substantially lower power use, 12GB of memory, DLSS 3 frame generation and AV1 encoding. Native 4K is less clear-cut, where the RTX 3080 can retain a performance advantage.
Is the RTX 4070 as fast as an RTX 3080?
Often, but not in every game or at every resolution. NVIDIA’s launch comparison says the RTX 4070 is on par with the RTX 3080 in rasterized games, while independent reviews describe results as workload-dependent. Tom’s Hardware found it often tied with the older card, while Digital Foundry’s testing highlights a shortfall at native 4K. Those conclusions are useful as a pattern, not a promise of identical frame rates in a particular game.
The distinction is important because benchmark results depend on the games, settings, resolution, drivers and test system. The reviews cited here do not provide one common benchmark suite that can be reproduced exactly across all outlets, so a single headline FPS figure would imply more precision than the evidence supports.
Rasterized gaming
For conventional rendering without ray tracing, RTX 4070 performance can land near RTX 3080 levels, particularly at 1440p. NVIDIA’s published comparison is specifically about rasterized games; it should not be read as a universal result for every game or rendering mode.

Ray tracing and upscaling
Ray tracing changes the workload, and results also depend on whether a game is rendered natively or uses upscaling. RTX 4070 supports DLSS 3, including frame generation, while RTX 3080 does not support DLSS 3 frame generation. NVIDIA reported an average 1.4× performance comparison against RTX 3080 with DLSS 3, but that figure describes NVIDIA’s stated DLSS 3 comparison, not native rendering or a general advantage in every game.
Why is the RTX 4070 more efficient?
NVIDIA says the RTX 4070 delivers on-par rasterized performance with nearly half the power of the RTX 3080 in its comparison. PCWorld and TechSpot also emphasize the newer card’s efficiency. That makes the RTX 4070 attractive to buyers who want RTX 3080-class gaming without the older card’s power demand. Actual consumption varies with the game, settings and specific board model.

Board power is only one part of a build decision. Check the power-supply recommendation, connectors and physical dimensions for the exact card you are considering; partner models can differ, so there is no single compatibility specification to assume for every RTX 4070.
Is the RTX 4070 a good choice for 1440p?
Yes. The review consensus makes 1440p the RTX 4070’s clearest use case: it offers strong performance at that resolution, lower power use than an RTX 3080, and access to DLSS 3 frame generation where supported. Its 12GB of memory is also 2GB more than the RTX 3080’s 10GB configuration cited in NVIDIA’s comparison.

Frame generation can increase displayed frame rates in supported games, but it is not the same as rendering every frame natively. If you prioritize native performance, compare results for your specific games and settings rather than relying on a DLSS 3 figure.

Choose based on the games and resolution you care about, the condition and price of the used card, and your system’s power and cooling capacity. At launch, NVIDIA set the RTX 4070’s starting price at $599. That is historical launch pricing, not a current street-price quote; compare actual local prices and the used RTX 3080’s condition before deciding.
