NVIDIA’s GeForce hotfix driver 546.31 was an optional December 2023 update aimed at two reported problems: intermittent stuttering with V-Sync enabled and muted colors when streaming gameplay to Discord. It followed GeForce Game Ready Driver 546.29 WHQL; it is a historical release, not a current driver recommendation.
What did GeForce hotfix 546.31 fix?
A contemporaneous HotHardware report said NVIDIA’s 546.31 hotfix targeted two distinct symptoms: intermittent stuttering when V-Sync was enabled, and gameplay colors appearing muted when streamed to Discord. These were specific reported bugs, not evidence that every GeForce user experienced either issue. HotHardware described 546.31 as an optional follow-up to the regular 546.29 WHQL release. Read the HotHardware report.
- V-Sync: intermittent stuttering while the setting was enabled.
- Discord streaming: muted-looking colors in a gameplay stream.
The update was a software driver hotfix, not a hardware repair or a general performance upgrade.
Where did 546.31 fit in NVIDIA’s release timeline?
| Driver | Release date | What the cited release information establishes |
|---|---|---|
| 546.29 WHQL | December 4, 2023 | NVIDIA’s regular Game Ready driver for Windows 10 64-bit and Windows 11. NVIDIA release page. |
| 546.31 hotfix | Reported December 5, 2023 | Optional follow-up reported to address V-Sync stuttering and muted Discord stream colors; the cited information is from HotHardware. |
| 546.33 WHQL | December 12, 2023 | NVIDIA’s release notes list the Discord muted-color problem as fixed. The cited page does not establish whether the V-Sync stutter fix was included. NVIDIA release page. |
NVIDIA describes hotfixes as a way to deliver selected fixes sooner, with fixes later incorporated into an official driver and the hotfix then removed. HotHardware reproduced NVIDIA’s explanation: “The GeForce Hotfix driver is our way to trying to get some of these fixes out to you more quickly.” That is NVIDIA’s stated rationale as quoted in the report, not an independent test of the fix.

What did the later 546.33 release confirm?
NVIDIA’s official 546.33 WHQL release page lists the Discord streaming muted-color issue among its fixed gaming bugs. This confirms that the Discord problem was addressed in that regular driver release; the cited notes do not say whether 546.33 also included the V-Sync stuttering fix. Avoid treating the Discord confirmation as proof that both 546.31 fixes were carried forward.
Should you install 546.31 now?
No—not as a current driver choice. Versions 546.29, 546.31, and 546.33 are December 2023 releases, and the available information does not establish their present availability, GPU support, or suitability for a system in 2026. For current driver software, use NVIDIA’s current driver selector. Notebook owners should check their laptop manufacturer’s recommended software updates, as NVIDIA advises on the 546.29 release page.
