Oracle continues to develop and sell it, while the server still has an open-source Community Edition under the GNU General Public License (GPL), commercial editions, and the managed MySQL HeatWave service. The practical impact of Oracle ownership depends on your license, edition, release track, operating system and deployment—not on ownership alone.
MySQL is still open source, but it is also a commercial Oracle product
The MySQL software is dual licensed. You can use it as an open-source product under the GPL or purchase a standard commercial license from Oracle. That means Oracle ownership has not ended the GPL route.
Oracle’s commercial lineup includes Standard Edition, Enterprise Edition and Cluster Carrier Grade Edition. Oracle says installations must be covered by an appropriate commercial agreement, including production, development, testing, backup and disaster-recovery deployments. Whether a particular use requires commercial terms depends on how MySQL is distributed and used, so review the license and agreement that apply to your deployment rather than assuming that every installation has the same obligation.
Community and commercial editions are not identical
Oracle reports that several capabilities previously limited to Enterprise Edition have been ported to Community Edition, with most of those changes in MySQL 9.7 and follow-up work in 26.7. That makes the old description of Community as receiving only a stripped-down feature set incomplete.

It does not make the editions equivalent. Oracle’s comparison information still identifies capabilities available only in commercial editions, and commercial licensing, support entitlements and service terms remain separate from GPL use.
Oracle is changing how MySQL development is opened to the community
Oracle’s contribution plan describes a staged move toward public, GitHub-first development. Changes already described by Oracle include calendar-based YY.M versioning, moving selected Enterprise features into Community Edition, and public and private discussions about opening development further.
During the current transition, approved patches are still merged into Oracle’s internal repository before synchronization with the public MySQL Server repository. The announced Phase 3, “Full GitHub-First Development,” is targeted for the end of October 2026. Oracle says that phase is intended to place open-source development in the public GitHub project, use GitHub Issues for project management and GitHub Actions for continuous integration.

That date is a target, not evidence that the change has already happened. Oracle also says releases will continue to be built with its internal infrastructure during Phase 3; separating Community Edition release engineering is planned for a later stage. The stated scope covers actively maintained Community Edition, Enterprise Edition, HeatWave and NDB variants.

Oracle’s community-engagement material names PGO-optimized Community binaries, vector functions, a hypergraph optimizer and JSON duality improvements as features under consideration or development direction. Treat those as stated priorities, not as guarantees that every item is present in a released version. Release notes for the specific version remain the authority on availability.
Choose the release line that fits your operating model
Oracle’s June 16, 2026 release-model description separates production releases into Innovation and Long-Term Support (LTS) tracks. The choice is operational rather than a judgment about which edition is “real” MySQL.

| Release track | Best fit | Operational trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Innovation | Teams that want new capabilities earlier and can test and upgrade regularly | More frequent change requires disciplined compatibility testing, deployment and rollback planning |
| Long-Term Support (LTS) | Production environments that prioritize a steadier, longer-lived line | You defer some new functionality in exchange for a more predictable maintenance path |
Oracle describes quarterly Critical Patch Updates (CPUs) and Critical Security Patch Updates (CSPUs) for urgent security issues between regular releases. Where advisory information is published depends on the MySQL edition. Before planning an upgrade, identify your exact server version and track, then check Oracle’s current version and platform notices.
What Oracle ownership means for an existing installation
There is no general requirement to migrate simply because Oracle owns MySQL. Start with an inventory of:
- the exact MySQL server version and whether it is an Innovation or LTS release;
- the edition and license used by each environment, including development, test, backup and disaster recovery;
- the operating system, architecture and hosting provider;
- whether your provider supplies MySQL, modifies it or operates it as a managed service; and
- your required support response, security-update process and upgrade frequency.
Then compare that inventory with Oracle’s current lifecycle notices for the specific version and platform. A version can have a different support position on one operating system or distribution than on another, so a generic “MySQL is supported” statement is not enough to schedule work.

When an upgrade deserves priority
- Your installed release or operating system is listed in a current end-of-support or support-change notice.
- You need a security fix delivered only in a newer supported line.
- Your application depends on a feature or connector whose compatibility requires a newer release.
- You cannot meet the testing and maintenance obligations of your current Innovation track.
For a production change, test the target server with representative queries, replication or clustering arrangements, backup restoration and application drivers before changing the live system. Keep a rollback plan that matches your storage engine and topology.
Where MySQL HeatWave fits
MySQL HeatWave is Oracle’s fully managed cloud database service built on MySQL Enterprise Edition. Oracle positions it with an integrated in-memory query accelerator for analytics on transactional data.
HeatWave is one option in Oracle’s portfolio, not a replacement announcement for the ordinary MySQL server. A self-managed GPL Community deployment, a commercially supported server and a managed HeatWave database involve different responsibilities, contracts and operating models. Select HeatWave only if its managed operations, cloud location, workload fit and commercial terms match your requirements.

Questions to answer before changing course
- Which release line am I running? Record the full version, edition and release track.
- How long is it supported? Check the current Oracle notice for that version, operating system and hosting arrangement.
- When should routine updates occur? Innovation users need a regular test-and-upgrade cycle; LTS users still need scheduled patching and lifecycle reviews.
- What happens between regular releases? Monitor the applicable CPU and CSPU advisories and confirm how they are issued for your edition.
- Do my license terms fit every environment? Include production, development, testing, backups and disaster recovery when reviewing commercial requirements.
- Would a managed service solve an operational problem? Compare HeatWave with the cost and control of running the server yourself; do not treat Oracle ownership as a requirement to move.
The outlook
Oracle controls the official MySQL roadmap and release infrastructure, but the community-opening plan is still in progress. The late-October 2026 GitHub-first milestone should be verified against Oracle’s latest project update before being treated as complete. Oracle’s statements establish its plans and product structure; they do not, by themselves, prove how independent contributors or users will respond over the long term.
For most teams, the sensible response is a version-and-license review, not an emergency migration. Keep using the supported release and edition that meet your technical and legal needs, and revisit the decision when your lifecycle, support or deployment requirements change.
