Northstar Defence Lab was announced on September 29, 2026, at Area X.O in Ottawa. It is the first facility in Calian’s planned nationwide network of regional defence development labs. Calian says it will build and operate Northstar as a place to integrate, test and validate technologies from different companies and platforms—not as a showcase for a single product.
What is the Northstar Defence Lab?
Northstar is a planned persistent environment for defence mission orchestration and systems integration. Its purpose is to help technologies made by different companies for different platforms and missions share data securely, coordinate activity and function together as a “system of systems.” Calian says the lab will support integration, orchestration, testing, technical validation and safe scaling.
The idea is to connect legacy and emerging defence capabilities and identify interoperability gaps before integrated capabilities move toward operations. Those are the organizations’ stated aims; the launch announcement does not report performance results or demonstrate that the lab has already achieved them. Calian’s announcement and Invest Ottawa’s announcement describe the planned work.
Where is Northstar, and who will operate it?
Northstar is to be established at Area X.O’s Greenbelt campus in Ottawa. Invest Ottawa founded and operates Area X.O, while Calian is to build and operate Northstar, serving as its defence integrator and orchestrator. The lab will be powered by Calian ATHORA, a platform the company describes as supporting system-of-systems interoperability and mission orchestration.

- QUICK SNAP-FIT ASSEMBLY — No glue, no mess: every precision-engineered piece clicks firmly into place so builders of all skill levels may complete their A-10 Thunderbolt II Warthog in one satisfying session without extra tools or adhesives.
- AUTHENTIC WARBIRD DETAIL — Faithfully recreates the iconic twin-engine, straight-wing attack jet with raised panel lines, movable control surfaces, and characteristic GAU-8 cannon nose for a display-ready replica straight out of the box.
- STEM-FRIENDLY BUILDING EXPERIENCE — The numbered part system and illustrated step-by-step guide introduce basic aerospace engineering concepts, supporting spatial reasoning and fine-motor development for builders ages 8 and up.
- DURABLE ABS CONSTRUCTION — High-impact ABS plastic parts resist warping and breakage, ensuring the finished model withstands shelf display, light handling, and proud show-and-tell moments for years to come.
- GREAT VALUE GIFT UNDER $25 — Thoughtfully packaged and priced at $21.99, this building set makes an ideal birthday, holiday, or any-occasion gift for aviation fans, military history enthusiasts, and hobbyist model builders alike.
Area X.O is described by the organizations as a next-generation R&D complex and NATO DIANA Test Centre, with real-world testing environments and links to Canada’s defence and dual-use innovation ecosystem. In practical terms, the plan combines Area X.O’s test-site environment with Calian’s role coordinating how participating technologies work together.
Who are the Northstar Defence Lab partners?
The announcement names eight founding ecosystem partners. Export Development Canada is participating separately as an industry commercialization partner.

The announced capability areas span communications, data fusion, artificial intelligence, cyber, sensing and operational decision support. Calian also says Northstar will remain open to its existing and expanding Calian VENTURES partner network and give Canadian innovators and SMEs a route to demonstrate how their intellectual property could contribute to larger defence solutions. The announcement does not specify an application process, eligibility requirements, fees or access schedule.
What does Calian’s planned regional lab network do?
Northstar is the first facility in a planned nationwide network. Calian presents regional labs as collaborative infrastructure for integrating and validating capabilities, with the goal of helping Canadian defence technologies work together across missions and platforms. The company says Northstar is part of an initiative to mobilize an initial $100 million to accelerate sovereign Canadian C5ISRT capabilities—command, control, communications, computers, cyber, intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance and targeting.

- 1/48 scale plastic model assembly kit. Length: 205mm, width: 77mm.
- Anti-slip surface details molded into the main sections of the model.
- Assembly type tracks feature straight sections for a highly realistic finish.
- Kit includes a weight for creating a heavy feel model.
- 2 marking options are included to recreate U.S. Army 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment M1A2s from 2003 in the Iraq War.
The $100 million is an announced mobilization target, not a confirmed Northstar budget. The available announcements do not establish that the full amount has been raised, committed to Northstar or spent. Nor do they name locations or opening dates for later labs. Vanguard Defence’s September 29, 2026 report also describes the mobilization figure.
