Nordic Semiconductor’s August 2023 deal targeted Atlazo’s AI hardware intellectual property and its eight-person core team—not a disclosed purchase of the entire startup for a stated cash price. Nordic said the technology could bring hyper-low-power AI processing and health-oriented sensor capabilities to future products; its 2025 reporting later linked Atlazo technology to the nRF54LM20B system-on-chip.

What did Nordic buy from Atlazo?

On 15 August 2023, Nordic Semiconductor announced an agreement to acquire Atlazo’s intellectual-property portfolio and enter employment agreements with the San Diego startup’s eight-person core team. The price was not disclosed. Nordic described Atlazo’s work as AI and machine-learning processors, sensor-interface design, and energy-management technology for small edge devices. Nordic’s announcement characterized the transaction as a strategic, small bolt-on acquisition.

That distinction matters: the announced deal was specifically for IP and team members, rather than a stated whole-company cash acquisition. In its Q3 2023 report, Nordic described the transaction as an acquisition of key IP and Atlazo’s core team, with U.S. regulatory approval still pending. Nordic’s Q3 report said approval was required; the announcement had forecast completion by the end of 2023.

Why was Atlazo’s technology relevant to Nordic?

Atlazo’s technology was designed for intelligence at the edge: processing data in a device rather than routinely sending it elsewhere. Nordic saw a fit with compact, battery-powered products that need to monitor signals continuously or respond quickly, including true-wireless earbuds, hearing aids, wearables, and health monitors.

For those devices, a processor’s usefulness depends not only on whether it can run an AI model, but on whether it can do so within tight power, size, and sensor-integration limits. Atlazo’s combination of AI/ML processing, sensor interfaces, and energy management addressed those constraints. Nordic EVP of Strategy and Product Management Kjetil Holstad said the acquisition would bring “a new level of always-on AI/ML capabilities” to the company’s core business and growth strategy. Nordic CEO Svenn-Tore Larsen called it “a small bolt-on acquisition for Nordic” but strategically significant.

How did Nordic expect to use the IP?

Nordic said it intended to incorporate Atlazo’s hyper-low-power AI/ML processor technology into future system-on-chips (SoCs) and combine it with sensor technologies for health applications. It was an intended product direction, not a claim that every Nordic chip would include Atlazo IP.

Does the nRF54 use Atlazo technology?

Yes, Nordic’s Q4 and preliminary full-year 2025 report provides a specific product link: it says the nRF54LM20B SoC has an integrated neural processing unit (NPU) based on technology from the 2023 Atlazo acquisition. Nordic describes the NPU as enabling AI tasks to run in milliseconds while using very little energy. This statement applies to the nRF54LM20B; it does not establish that every nRF54 model uses the same technology. Nordic’s 2025 results report is the cited source for this later product connection.
