Victor D. Alhadeff founded Egghead in 1983; Newegg launched separately in the United States in 2001 under Fred Chang’s leadership. Available corporate records do not show a common founder, owner, acquisition, or successor relationship.
Why the two companies are easy to confuse
Both brands used egg-related names, sold computers and electronics, and operated during the shift from physical stores to online shopping. Egghead’s online brand was active around the same time Newegg began selling online. That overlap explains the resemblance, but similar names and products are not evidence of shared ownership.
Egghead and Newegg at a glance
| Company | Founder or origin | What happened |
|---|---|---|
| Egghead | Victor D. Alhadeff founded Egghead, Inc. in 1983, according to an SEC filing. | Onsale acquired Egghead.com in 1999; the business filed Chapter 11 in 2001; Amazon later bought selected online assets. |
| Newegg | Launched separately in the United States in 2001 under Fred Chang’s leadership. | It developed as its own e-commerce company and is now majority-controlled through Hangzhou Lianluo’s subsidiary Digital Grid. |
Egghead’s actual corporate history
1983: Victor D. Alhadeff founded Egghead
An SEC filing identifies Victor D. Alhadeff as the founder of Egghead, Inc., a specialty retailer of personal-computer software and accessories. Alhadeff was chairman until 1990. He then acquired Egghead University, a separate training division, so his founder status should not be read as continuous ownership through Egghead’s later years.
1998–1999: The business moved online and changed corporate owners
Egghead shifted from a primarily physical-store model toward online retail in 1998. In November 1999, online retailer Onsale acquired the existing Egghead business and changed its own name to Egghead.com, Inc., as described in the company’s SEC filing. The Federal Trade Commission also recorded the Onsale–Egghead.com transaction.

2001: Bankruptcy and a limited Amazon asset purchase
Egghead filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy on August 15, 2001. Later that year, Amazon paid $6.1 million in cash for the Egghead.com domain name and intellectual property. Contemporary coverage reported that Amazon did not buy Egghead’s physical inventory, equipment, or the entire operating retailer. Thus, “Amazon bought Egghead” is an incomplete description: it bought selected assets from the bankrupt business, not a continuing Egghead retail operation.

Newegg began separately
Newegg’s corporate history says the company was founded and Newegg.com launched in the United States in 2001. Fred Chang is identified with that founding and was a key early executive and shareholder. A safer description is that Newegg launched in 2001 under Chang’s leadership; the available filings do not describe Newegg as a renamed Egghead or as an Egghead acquisition.
Newegg’s 2024 annual-report disclosures also describe Chang as having served as CEO during multiple periods and as a major shareholder and vice chairman. Those continuing ties are to Newegg, not to Egghead.

Who controls Newegg now?
Ownership changes, so the date matters. In Newegg’s Form 20-F filed April 28, 2026, for the fiscal year ended December 31, 2025, the company identified publicly traded Hangzhou Liaison Interactive Information Technology Co. (Hangzhou Lianluo) as its majority owner through the subsidiary Digital Grid.

The filing reported these approximate voting-power figures as of March 31, 2026:
| Holder | Approximate voting power |
|---|---|
| Zhitao He | 53.1% |
| Vladimir Galkin | 20.9% |
| Fred Chang | 20.5% |
| Combined | 94.5% |
These percentages describe reported voting control on that date, not a permanent ownership arrangement. A founder is the person who starts a company; a shareholder owns shares; a parent company controls a subsidiary; and voting power is the ability to influence decisions. Chang’s reported 20.5% voting stake does not connect him to Egghead.
A short timeline

- 1990: Alhadeff stopped serving as Egghead’s chairman and acquired Egghead University.
- 1998: Egghead shifted toward an online retail model.
- November 1999: Onsale acquired Egghead.com and renamed itself Egghead.com, Inc.
- August 15, 2001: Egghead filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.
- 2001: Amazon bought the Egghead.com domain and intellectual property for $6.1 million, not the physical operating assets.
- 2001: Newegg launched independently in the United States.
- March 31, 2026: Newegg’s Form 20-F reported the voting-control figures listed above; the filing was made April 28, 2026.
Was Fred Chang involved with Egghead?
Available corporate records identify Alhadeff as Egghead’s founder and Chang as a founder or key early figure at Newegg. They do not show the two men as business partners, nor do they show Chang founding, owning, managing, or acquiring Egghead. That conclusion is based on the companies’ documented corporate histories; it does not claim that every private transaction in either company’s history has been exhaustively identified.
Answers to the common versions of the question
- Did Newegg buy Egghead? No evidence in the cited corporate histories shows such an acquisition.
- Did Egghead change its name to Newegg? No. Onsale changed its name to Egghead.com, Inc.; Newegg launched as a separate company.
- Did Amazon sell Egghead’s business to Newegg? No documented transaction shows that. Amazon bought selected Egghead.com assets.
- Was Fred Chang an Egghead executive? No reliable evidence cited here identifies him as one.
- Did both companies sell computers? Yes. They competed in overlapping categories, which explains the market similarity but not common ownership.
- Is Egghead.com still the same retailer? No. The original operation went through bankruptcy, and Amazon acquired selected domain and intellectual-property assets.
- Is Newegg still controlled by its founder? Chang remained a major shareholder with about 20.5% of voting power as of March 31, 2026, but the filing identified Hangzhou Lianluo/Digital Grid and Zhitao He as the controlling side.
Bottom line
Newegg is not a continuation, rebrand, or successor owned by the people who founded or formerly owned Egghead. Egghead was founded by Victor D. Alhadeff, later acquired by Onsale, and ultimately entered bankruptcy; Newegg launched independently in 2001 under Fred Chang’s leadership. The connection is a similar name and shared computer-retail history—not shared founders or documented common ownership.
