Nitrux 2.0 looked distinctive and thoughtfully customized, but one review found meaningful caveats around older hardware, the live session, and an experimental desktop option. This is a historical review of the February 2022 release—not an assessment of today’s Nitrux, which has since moved in a different direction.
What Nitrux 2.0 was
Nitrux 2.0 was a Debian-based desktop distribution built around a customized KDE Plasma environment called NX Desktop. It included applications from the project’s MauiKit toolkit and used OpenRC for service management rather than systemd. Those details describe the 2022 release; they should not be confused with the current Nitrux product.
Component versions varied across contemporary reporting. DebugPoint’s reviewed build listed Plasma 5.24 or later, KDE Frameworks 5.91, and the XanMod 5.16 kernel, while another release-era report listed Plasma 5.23.5, Frameworks 5.90.0, and KDE Gear 21.12.1. These figures should be read as tied to specific images and update states, not as one definitive version set. DebugPoint’s review and a contemporaneous release report document the differing snapshots.
How the desktop looked and worked
NX Desktop and Plasma
The reviewer described the default Plasma desktop as polished and organized, with a top panel, a preconfigured Latte dock, visual themes, and light and dark modes. “Stunning” is a matter of taste, but the review’s praise was specifically about this out-of-box presentation and its customization options.

Applications and updates
The review said many included applications were distributed as AppImages. Its examples were Index file manager, Station terminal, Pix image viewer, Nota text editor, Nitro Share, and NX Software Center; Firefox and LibreOffice were also included. The reviewer noted reports from that period of Firefox disappearing after a basic system update and advised examining proposed package changes before proceeding. That is a historical warning, not evidence of a current update issue.
Installation and hardware caveats in the review
The distribution used a modified Calamares installer. The reviewer completed installation in a virtual machine, but could not finish installing on one older physical computer configured with an Intel i3 processor, SSD, 4 GB of RAM, NVIDIA graphics using driver 340, and Broadcom hardware. On that machine, the live session did not detect Wi-Fi, KWin crashed early, and the installer’s Next button was disabled in connection with internet access.

Those observations identify possible compatibility trouble on that particular setup; they do not show that every Nitrux 2.0 installation failed or that the same hardware components always cause problems. They do make testing the live environment before committing to an installation especially prudent for anyone relying on older graphics or wireless hardware. The review’s installation account provides the specific test context.
The experimental Maui Shell/Cask option
The reviewer found that the experimental Maui Shell/Cask session was selected by default at login. In the reviewer’s virtual machine, most clicks and touches did not work as expected. For a conventional desktop session, the reviewer recommended choosing Plasma instead. This is an account of the experimental session in the 2.0-era test, not a statement about Nitrux today.

- Live Boot: Simply plug the USB drive into your computer, select the USB drive as your boot device, and experience Linux Mint without installation. This allows you to test the OS and its features before making any changes to your system.
- Install Option: Once you've tested and decided to keep Linux Mint, you can easily install it on your computer directly from the USB drive.
- Pre-installed software like LibreOffice for office tasks, a capable web browser (Firefox), email client (Thunderbird), and multimedia tools. This minimizes the need for additional downloads, saving you time and effort.
- Resource Efficiency: Designed to run efficiently on a variety of hardware configurations. It demands fewer system resources compared to some other operating systems, making it an excellent choice for older computers or devices with limited hardware specifications.

What the memory figures do—and do not—show
In a virt-manager virtual machine, the reviewer observed about 1 GB of memory use while idle and close to 2 GB with an editor, LibreOffice, the file manager, an image viewer, and Firefox open with five tabs, including a video. Because the figures came from a virtual machine after the reviewer’s physical installation attempt failed, they are limited observations—not a benchmark, a real-hardware performance estimate, or a published minimum requirement. The sources consulted did not establish project-published system requirements for Nitrux 2.0. DebugPoint’s test notes describe the measurement setting.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is Nitrux 2.0 a daily-driver choice?
The review’s case for Nitrux 2.0 was its customized Plasma desktop, attractive default presentation, MauiKit applications, and a distinct OpenRC-based setup. Its cautions were equally practical: one older physical system experienced Wi-Fi detection, compositor, and installer problems, while the experimental Cask session did not behave reliably in the reviewer’s virtual machine. The available evidence is a single reviewer’s experience, not a controlled comparison or a broad compatibility survey.

For a prospective user evaluating that historical release, the sensible decision would depend on whether the default Plasma workflow appeals and whether the live session and installation behave correctly on the target machine. The review does not establish that Nitrux 2.0 was more stable, faster, safer, or easier than another distribution.
Nitrux has changed since version 2.0
Nitrux’s official homepage now lists version 6.1.0 and describes a specialized workstation system with an immutable foundation, NX AppHub, and Hyprland. Those current details are substantially different from the Debian/Plasma/OpenRC picture of Nitrux 2.0 and should not be projected backward onto the February 2022 release. See the official Nitrux homepage for its current description and version.
The available sources do not establish whether an official Nitrux 2.0 image or archive remains downloadable today, nor do they settle that release’s support lifecycle. Do not assume the old release is still maintained or available from an official mirror based on this review.
