Nishimatsu Construction does not look expensive on its latest-year numbers, but it looks less comfortably valued on the earnings and dividend outlook investors actually have to fund. At about ¥5,242 on October 20, 2026, the shares trade near 10.1 times FY2027 forecast earnings and offer roughly a 4.8% yield on the company’s forecast ¥250 annual dividend. The complication is that management expects FY2027 profit attributable to owners of the parent to fall 14.8% to ¥20.5 billion even as sales rise 11.1%. The stock therefore depends on domestic order growth converting into durable margins, while the new dividend-on-equity (DOE) policy supports distributions through a lower-profit year.

What does Nishimatsu Construction’s valuation look like in October 2026?

On forward estimates, TSE:1820 is fairly valued to slightly rich rather than deeply undervalued. IFIS reported forecast EPS of ¥519.2, a 10.1-times forecast PER, PBR of 1.08 times and a PER-based theoretical value of ¥5,468. Against the ¥5,242 quote on October 20, that theoretical value represents only about 4% upside, leaving little cushion if estimates are reduced.

Measure Figure Qualification
Share price ¥5,242 IFIS quote, October 20, 2026
FY2027 forecast EPS ¥519.2 IFIS estimate
FY2027 forecast PER 10.1x Based on the IFIS estimate
PBR 1.08x IFIS figure
PER-based theoretical price ¥5,468 IFIS calculation; approximately 4% above the quote
FY2027 forecast dividend ¥250 per share Company forecast reported by Yahoo Japan on October 23, 2026
Forward dividend yield About 4.8% Calculated at ¥5,242; Yahoo Japan showed 4.71% on October 23

The same stock can appear cheap on trailing data: Yahoo Japan’s delayed page showed FY2026 EPS of ¥609.56 and a trailing P/E of 8.67. That lower multiple reflects a completed year in which profit increased sharply; it is not the valuation investors should use without considering the FY2027 reset.

Why is FY2027 profit expected to fall while sales grow?

Management’s June 2026 first-quarter fact book left its May 12 full-year forecast unchanged. Consolidated sales are expected to reach ¥440.0 billion, up 11.1% from FY2026, while operating profit is forecast at ¥29.5 billion, ordinary profit at ¥29.0 billion and profit attributable to owners of the parent at ¥20.5 billion. The net-income target is 14.8% below FY2026’s ¥24.066 billion.

That pattern points to a quality-of-growth issue rather than a simple demand collapse. Domestic civil-engineering and building orders drove strong first-quarter results, but investors need to test whether backlog converts at sustainable gross margins after construction-cost inflation, labor shortages and project-mix changes. International operations have been more volatile, so overseas execution can offset otherwise healthy Japanese order intake.

What did the latest completed year deliver?

For the year ended March 2026, Nishimatsu reported consolidated net sales of ¥396.030 billion, operating profit of ¥28.029 billion, ordinary profit of ¥27.384 billion, profit attributable to owners of the parent of ¥24.066 billion and basic EPS of ¥609.56. Net income rose 28.0% from ¥17.543 billion in FY2025, while sales increased from ¥366.811 billion.

Those results explain the low trailing multiple, but the unusually strong year also creates a demanding comparison. A valuation based on FY2026 alone assumes that the margin and profit improvement is repeatable.

Can Nishimatsu keep paying a ¥250 dividend?

The ¥250 figure is the company’s FY2027 dividend forecast, not a guaranteed payment. Nishimatsu changed its policy from a payout-ratio basis to a dividend-on-equity (DOE) ratio of approximately 5% from fiscal 2024. Annual dividends were ¥221 in FY2023, ¥220 in FY2024, ¥220 in FY2025 and ¥230 in FY2026, including the latest ¥100 interim and ¥130 year-end payments.

A DOE framework can make dividends steadier when one year’s earnings are weak because the reference is equity rather than current profit. It does not remove the need for cash generation: dividends still compete with capital spending, acquisitions, debt service and working-capital needs. Yahoo Japan reported a FY2026 payout ratio of 37.7%, but that historical ratio should not be treated as the FY2027 coverage level while earnings are forecast to decline.

What would make the dividend more secure?

  • Domestic civil-engineering and building orders must convert into profit without a material gross-margin squeeze.
  • Operating cash flow should keep pace with accounting earnings after construction working-capital movements.
  • Overseas projects need to avoid losses that consume the surplus created in Japan.
  • Growth investment and M&A should earn returns consistent with management’s long-term ROE objective rather than crowding out distributions.

What are the bull, base and bear cases for TSE:1820?

Bull case: domestic execution beats the plan

In the bullish scenario, the expanding Japanese order book converts at durable margins, FY2027 profit exceeds ¥20.5 billion, and the approximately 5% DOE framework supports additional dividend growth. A profit beat would reduce the forward PER and could justify a price above the IFIS theoretical value.

Base case: the forecast is broadly right

The base case is that earnings normalize toward management’s guidance, the ¥250 dividend is maintained, and the shares remain around 9–10 times earnings with a 4–5% yield. At that valuation, most of the return would come from dividends rather than multiple expansion.

Bear case: normalization and execution problems coincide

In the bearish case, one-off benefits or FY2026 margin improvements fade, construction costs and labor expenses rise, or an overseas project produces losses. The market could then re-rate the shares even if the stated DOE policy remains in place, because a policy does not guarantee that book equity or cash flow will support an unchanged distribution indefinitely.

How strong is the balance sheet behind the dividend?

The June 2026 fact book showed an owner’s-equity ratio of 29.5% at June 30 and interest-bearing debt of ¥225.1 billion. Those figures do not by themselves indicate an imminent dividend problem, but they make cash-flow conversion and financing costs important parts of the income-investment case. Higher interest rates would increase pressure on projects and on the cost of carrying debt, while acquisitions could add leverage before they add earnings.

Nishimatsu’s Integrated Report 2024 described growth investment in GX, community development and asset-value-added businesses, alongside a long-term ROE target of 10%. The May 2026 release said retained capital would fund proactive growth investment, including M&A. Investors therefore have to judge whether retained earnings are creating enough incremental return to compensate for the income that could otherwise be distributed.

What should investors monitor after buying?

  1. Quarterly margin and backlog conversion: compare domestic order growth with gross profit, not sales alone.
  2. Full-year estimate changes: a reduction from the ¥20.5 billion profit plan would raise the effective forward PER.
  3. Cash flow and debt: track operating cash generation, interest-bearing debt and the owner’s-equity ratio together.
  4. Overseas project disclosures: look for loss provisions, delays or contract changes that could reverse domestic gains.
  5. Dividend declarations: distinguish an announced interim or year-end payment from the ¥250 forecast and check the September 30 and March 31 record dates.

Is Nishimatsu Construction stock overvalued?

It is not obviously overvalued on a roughly 10-times forward PER and near-5% yield, but the margin of safety is narrow. The valuation assumes that domestic growth offsets a 14.8% planned profit decline and that the DOE-supported dividend remains backed by cash generation and disciplined investment. That makes the shares sensitive to even modest earnings disappointments.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does a DOE policy differ from a payout-ratio policy?

A payout ratio links dividends directly to that year’s net profit, so payments can fluctuate sharply with earnings. DOE links the target to shareholders’ equity, which can smooth dividends but still depends on the company’s ability to generate cash and maintain a sound capital base.

Which result would most improve the valuation case?

The clearest positive signal would be evidence that Japanese backlog is converting into higher or stable gross margins while the FY2027 profit estimate is raised. Sales growth by itself would be less persuasive if costs rise at the same time.

Why can the share price rise when forecast profit falls?

Share prices reflect expected cash returns, balance-sheet value and future earnings, not only the next year’s profit. A credible dividend policy, stronger orders or confidence that FY2027 is a temporary trough can support the price, although those supports weaken if execution disappoints.

What dates matter for a Nishimatsu dividend investor?

The company uses September 30 and March 31 as the interim and year-end dividend record dates. Investors should verify the ex-dividend timetable and the final declared amount with the exchange or company announcement because the forecast amount is not the same as a declared payment.
