Nintendo has described a detachable device made from two display-bearing units, but the patent application does not confirm a product or a new Switch. Nintendo identifies Switch 2, released June 5, 2025, as the successor to the original Switch; no cited source connects this patent to Switch 2.
What does Nintendo’s dual-screen patent describe?
The application describes two devices, each with its own display. They can be attached to one another and connected in either of two orientations, with the second orientation reversed from the first. Nintendo Life reproduces the filing’s description of that arrangement.
In practical terms, the drawings and description point to a handheld that can be assembled from the two units, reoriented so a screen is covered or exposed, or separated into two independently usable devices. GameSpot reports that a screen can remain visible on the outside when the assembled device is closed.
Is this patent the next Switch?
There is no evidence in the cited reporting that Nintendo has identified the device as a Switch successor. A patent application describes an invention; it does not announce that Nintendo will manufacture or sell it. GameSpot and HotHardware both note that Nintendo has filed concepts that did not become retail products.

- The next evolution of Nintendo Switch
- One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld
- Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
- Dock that supports 4K when connected to a compatible TV*
- GameChat** lets you voice chat, share your game screen, and connect via video chat as you play
The filing does not establish a product name, launch date, price, final design, or software lineup. It also does not confirm that the concept is a Switch 2 accessory. Calling it “the next Switch” is speculation, not a claim attributed to Nintendo.
How does it compare with the confirmed Switch successor?
Nintendo’s official investor material says Switch 2 was released on June 5, 2025, and identifies it as the successor to Nintendo Switch. The company highlights a larger, more responsive screen, magnetic Joy-Con controllers, and more powerful processing and graphics performance. Its description does not identify the detachable dual-screen patent as a Switch 2 feature.

| Question | What is established |
|---|---|
| What is the filing? | A patent application describing two detachable devices, each with a display, that can connect in two orientations. Nintendo Life reproduces the filing text. |
| Can the units be used separately? | GameSpot reports that the halves can operate independently. |
| What is Nintendo’s current Switch successor? | Nintendo identifies Switch 2 as the successor; its investor material gives June 5, 2025, as the release date. |
| Is the patented device a Switch 2 product? | Not established by the cited sources. |
| Is it coming to market? | Not established. GameSpot and HotHardware caution that a Nintendo filing does not guarantee a retail product. |
What would matter if Nintendo announces a product?
The patent alone does not provide confirmed retail specifications. If Nintendo turns the idea into a product, useful questions would include:
- How the screens sit when joined: hinged, stacked, or separated.
- Whether each half works alone, and how the units communicate when apart.
- Which games support two displays and whether existing software needs changes.
- How its size, weight, battery life, and durability compare with a conventional handheld.
- Whether it works with Switch 2 and its accessories.
These are evaluation questions, not specifications promised by the filing.
