The Wii U is best understood as two related devices: the main console and its wireless Wii U GamePad. iFixit’s November 19, 2012 teardown found a largely modular design, hidden Tri-wing fasteners, a substantial optical drive and heat sink, and a GamePad built around its own screen, controls, radio hardware, and rechargeable battery. iFixit rated the system 8 out of 10 for repairability, an editorial score from that 2012 examination rather than a current industry standard.
What the teardown covers
The teardown examines the console and the separate GamePad controller. The GamePad is not merely a passive accessory: it contains a 6.2-inch LCD touchscreen, motion-control hardware, a front-facing camera, NFC functionality, wireless circuitry, buttons, and its own battery compartment. The console contains the processor, graphics hardware, storage, optical drive, cooling system, motherboard, and additional wireless modules.
iFixit’s guide is a hardware examination, not a complete repair manual. For an actual fault, use the task-specific guide for the console or GamePad assembly involved rather than treating the teardown’s photo sequence as a universal procedure.
Fasteners and tools you need
Both the console and GamePad use hidden Tri-wing screws. The Wii U repair catalog lists Tri-point Y0/Y1 and Phillips drivers, along with spudgers, tweezers, and, for some jobs, a heat gun. A Tri-point bit is not interchangeable with a Phillips bit, so match the driver to each screw head and confirm the size in the guide for your exact task.

- Controllers are original OEM (not 3rd party)
- Tested and works well. Nice condition
Before opening the hardware
- Shut the console down completely and disconnect power and accessories.
- Photograph cable routing and connector orientation before unplugging anything.
- Use a precision driver set containing the required Tri-point Y0/Y1 and Phillips sizes, not a single generic screwdriver.
- Keep screws separated by assembly; hidden fasteners may sit beneath stickers or along the rear edge of the outer case.
- Do not force a panel. If it does not release, look for a remaining screw or cable.
The outer-case guide describes Phillips and Tri-wing screws concealed under stickers and at the rear edge. Stripping one can turn a straightforward disassembly into a more difficult extraction, so apply firm downward pressure and use the exact bit.
Console teardown: the major assemblies
Outer case and internal layout
After the concealed fasteners are removed, the console opens into a set of separately serviceable assemblies rather than one heavily glued enclosure. iFixit specifically praised the use of screws instead of adhesive or clips for many connections. That modularity is why the repairability score reached 8/10 in the 2012 teardown.
Optical drive
The optical drive is one of the console’s most prominent internal parts. iFixit measured the drive at 424.2 grams—nearly one third of the teardown’s measured 1.5 kg console weight. The figure is iFixit’s teardown measurement, not a manufacturer specification for every Wii U revision.
Rank #2
- The Wii U GamePad breaks down barriers between you and your entertainment with a 6.2" 16:9 LCD touch screen, motion control system, front-facing camera, microphone, stereo speakers, rumble feature
- Console works with most games from the original Wii console, as well as the Wii Remote, Wii Remote Plus, Nunchuk controllers, Balance Board and many other Wii accessories, so you can continue to enjoy your favorite Wii features
- Play using a Wii Remote controller, the Wii U GamePad controller or a Wii U Pro Controller.
- Four USB 2.0 connector slots are included. The new console is backward compatible with Wii games and Wii accessories.
Heat sink and cooling
A substantial heat sink sits alongside the drive and motherboard assemblies. The repair catalog includes separate guides for the fan and heat sink, making cooling components practical targets when symptoms point to airflow or thermal problems. A teardown view alone does not diagnose a failed fan or overheating cause.

Motherboard and chips
iFixit identified an IBM Power-based multicore processor and an AMD Radeon-based HD GPU, plus internal 8 GB or 32 GB storage and support for external USB storage. The teardown also identified a Panasonic HDMI controller, Samsung eMMC, Micron DDR3L memory, and Samsung NAND flash. These are observations from the examined unit; they should not be treated as proof that every regional or later-revised console uses identical chips.
Wireless modules
Three separate wireless modules are visible on the underside of the motherboard:

- Broadcom BCM43237KMLG
- Broadcom BCM43362KUB6
- Broadcom BCM20702 Bluetooth 3.0
The presence of distinct modules helps explain why a wireless fault can involve a replaceable board-level assembly rather than the entire motherboard. Compatibility still depends on the console revision and region.
GamePad teardown: a second device inside the system
Screen and front hardware
iFixit describes a 6.2-inch, 854 × 480-pixel LCD touchscreen. The GamePad also includes motion control, a front-facing camera, NFC functionality, and the physical controls needed to operate games independently of a television for supported uses. These specifications come from the 2012 teardown guide.

Opening the GamePad exposes its buttons, control assemblies, display, circuit boards, wireless hardware, and interconnects. Because the controller communicates wirelessly with the console and presents a second display, a GamePad fault cannot automatically be repaired by replacing a console component.

- Includes Replacement Wii U Console.
Battery compartment
The rechargeable GamePad battery is accessible as a separate compartment, one of the teardown’s clearest examples of serviceable design. A replacement battery is relevant only when the symptom and part match, and the replacement must be compatible with the GamePad revision. Marketplace listings alone do not establish fit.
Console battery versus GamePad battery
These are different batteries with different jobs. The console contains a small cell battery for its clock. Nintendo says to remove that cell only when replacement is necessary because the clock stops working when it is removed. The GamePad uses a rechargeable battery for controller operation, located behind its battery cover. Do not order a GamePad battery for a console-clock problem, or treat the console cell as the GamePad’s power source.
Basic and Deluxe models
| Model identified in the repair catalog | Exterior color | Internal storage | What the source establishes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Basic | White | 8 GB | Model and storage designation listed by iFixit |
| Deluxe | Black | 32 GB | Model and storage designation listed by iFixit |
The documented comparison is storage and exterior color. It does not establish that every other component differs between Basic and Deluxe units.

Choosing a replacement part
Start with the device, then the assembly and model compatibility:
- Identify the device: console or GamePad.
- Match the fault to a part: possible categories include GamePad battery, optical drive, fan, buttons, ports, screen, or wireless module.
- Confirm the revision and region: compare the console or controller model information with the repair guide and part listing.
- Check the procedure: make sure the part’s replacement guide addresses the reported symptom; a compatible-looking connector does not prove functional compatibility.
- Inspect the replacement: verify connectors, mounting points, and included hardware before disassembly.
iFixit’s catalog confirms repair guides and part categories, but it does not establish current inventory, seller quality, prices, or universal compatibility for third-party listings.
Does Nintendo still repair Wii U hardware?
Nintendo Support currently states that it no longer accepts service requests for the Wii U console, GamePad, or accessories. That makes accurate teardown and task-specific repair documentation more useful, but the policy does not certify the quality or availability of any particular third-party replacement part.
Quick Recap
What this teardown can—and cannot—tell you
- It shows: hidden Tri-wing fasteners, extensive screw-secured modularity, the optical drive and heat sink, three underside wireless modules, and a separately serviceable GamePad battery compartment.
- It does not show: that every regional or later-revised unit has identical components, that a listed replacement part will fit every model, or that a particular symptom has a single guaranteed cause.
- It does not replace: the device-specific repair guide for the optical drive, fan, motherboard, heat sink, wireless module, screen, controls, ports, or battery.
