Is Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack worth it for N64 games? In the U.S., it can be a good deal if you want to play several games in Nintendo’s current N64 selection—or will use the added classic-game libraries, select DLC, and standard online benefits too. It is harder to justify if only one or two N64 titles interest you and you will not use the other extras. The individual plan costs $49.99 per year, $30 more than standard Nintendo Switch Online; check Nintendo’s current N64 catalog against your must-play list before upgrading.
What you get for the price
Nintendo’s current U.S. annual prices are $49.99 for an individual Expansion Pack membership and $79.99 for a family membership covering up to eight Nintendo Accounts. Standard Nintendo Switch Online costs $19.99 per year individually or $34.99 per year for a family. That makes the added annual cost $30 for an individual plan or $45 for a family plan. These are U.S. prices; Nintendo says membership prices vary by country and duration, so check your local Nintendo account storefront if you are elsewhere.

Are the N64 games included with Expansion Pack?
Yes. Expansion Pack includes access to Nintendo’s N64 Classics collection, but “N64 games” means a curated, changing selection—not the entire Nintendo 64 library. Membership must be active to access the collection. Before subscribing, check the current Nintendo 64 Classics catalog for the particular games you want; do not base the decision on an assumption that a favorite is included or that the catalog is fixed.

Nintendo also cautions that game behavior and presentation can differ from the original N64 versions. The service should not be treated as a guarantee that every game will look or behave exactly as it did on original hardware.
When the upgrade is worth considering
You want several games in the current N64 selection
If multiple titles on Nintendo’s catalog are games you expect to play, the $30 individual-plan difference may be worthwhile. The value depends on the specific games you want and how much you will play them; Nintendo does not publish a universal threshold for how many games make the upgrade worthwhile.

You will use other Expansion Pack benefits
The tier also adds selected Game Boy Advance, Virtual Boy, and SEGA Genesis games, as well as select downloadable content. Nintendo names Animal Crossing: New Horizons – Happy Home Paradise, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe – Booster Course Pass, and Splatoon 2: Octo Expansion among the included DLC. DLC access requires the base game and an active membership, and access pauses if the membership lapses. If you would use these alongside N64 games, they can make the upgrade more compelling. You are sharing a family membership
A family Expansion Pack plan costs $45 more per year than the standard family plan and covers up to eight Nintendo Accounts. Whether that difference makes sense depends on how many people in the group will use the included games and other benefits; the account limit alone does not establish that everyone will use them.

When it may not be worth it
- You only want one or two N64 games. The added cost is difficult to justify if those games are the only benefits you expect to use. Verify that they are currently available before paying.
- You will not use the other libraries or included DLC. Those additions matter only if you play the relevant games and meet the DLC conditions.
- You have a Switch or Switch Lite and are counting on GameCube Classics. Nintendo identifies GameCube Classics as a Switch 2 benefit, so do not include it in the value calculation for a Switch or Switch Lite. Nintendo announced the Switch 2 distinction in its September 2025 update.
Do you need the N64 controller?
No. Nintendo describes the Nintendo 64 Controller as an optional supported controller, not a requirement for playing the collection. You can consider Expansion Pack without buying that accessory. If you prefer an N64-style control layout, check the N64 Classics page for controller support and current details before purchasing an accessory.
Nintendo lists TV, tabletop, and handheld play modes for the collection, single-system play for one to four players, and online play for two to four players. These capabilities may help if you intend to play with others, but they do not change which games are in the catalog.
