Downloaded Nintendo Switch games can be moved between system memory and a compatible microSD card; save data cannot. Your progress, achievements and other save records remain in the console’s system memory, even when the game itself is stored on the card. On a Nintendo Switch, Switch Lite or Switch OLED running system version 10.0.0 or later, use System Settings > Data Management > Move Data Between System / microSD Card (the label can read Move Data Between Console/microSD Card in some regions). This moves downloaded software, downloadable content and much of the update data without downloading the game again. It does not create an SD-card backup of your saves, and some update data cannot be migrated.

What can and cannot be stored on a Nintendo Switch microSD card?

The important distinction is between software and save data. Software is the installable game package; save data is your personal progress. Nintendo deliberately keeps saves in system memory.

Data System memory microSD card What to know
Save data Yes No It cannot be copied or moved to a card.
Downloaded games Yes Yes Move them with Data Management.
DLC and most updates Yes Yes Some update data cannot migrate.
Screenshots and videos Yes Yes Copy them from Album or Data Management; Nintendo applies a file-count limit regardless of capacity.
Game-card contents Not applicable No The cartridge is not copied to the microSD card. Save data still stays in system memory.

Nintendo states that “save data (saved game progress and related achievements, etc.) is without exception stored in the system memory” and “cannot be moved or saved onto a microSD card.” That means a larger card solves install-space problems, not save-backup problems.

How do I move downloaded games from system memory to a microSD card?

Use the console’s built-in move command. It is available on Nintendo Switch, Switch Lite and Switch OLED when the system is on version 10.0.0 or higher and a compatible card is inserted.

  1. From the HOME Menu, open System Settings.
  2. Scroll to Data Management.
  3. Select Move Data Between System / microSD Card. In some regions this appears as Move Data Between Console/microSD Card.
  4. Choose Move to microSD Card or Move to System Memory.
  5. Select one or more software titles, choose OK, and leave the console powered on while the transfer completes.

The option is unavailable when no card is inserted. Check available space first at HOME > System Settings > Data Management. A move keeps the installed software, so it normally avoids a fresh download.

What the Move Data command does not promise

  • It never moves save data. Your progress remains in system memory.
  • Some update data stays behind. Nintendo documents that save data and some update data cannot be migrated.
  • It is not a permanent install-location lock. Nintendo describes the feature as a way to move existing data, not as a setting that permanently specifies where all future data is installed.
  • Later updates can use the other location. If you continue playing after a move, new update data may be saved in the location you did not select. Check Data Management again if space usage appears unexpected.

Can I move save data to the microSD card?

No. Nintendo does not support copying, moving or backing up Switch save data to a microSD card. Save records remain in system memory whether the game is digital, on a cartridge, installed on the card or temporarily archived.

Deleting or archiving the game download does not delete its save data. When you redownload the same software for the same user, the existing save normally lets you resume. Physical and digital versions of the same title generally use that console user’s save, although individual games can have exceptions.

What can I do with saves instead?

  • Keep the console save in place. Moving the game files does not require any save-data action.
  • Transfer a save to another Switch. Use System Settings > Data Management > Transfer Your Save Data and follow Nintendo’s console-to-console process. The user on each console must be linked to the same Nintendo Account. This is a move between consoles, not an SD-card backup.
  • Delete unwanted saves. Go to System Settings > Data Management > Delete Save Data. Deletion is separate from deleting the game software and cannot be undone from the console.

Do not assume that a game-card cartridge contains your progress: Nintendo says save data is not stored on the game card either.

Which microSD cards are supported?

For the original Nintendo Switch family, the slot accepts only microSD-sized cards. Nintendo lists these capacities:

Card type Capacity range Requirement
microSD Up to 2 GB Supported
microSDHC 4 GB–32 GB Supported
microSDXC 64 GB–2 TB Requires a system update before use

Nintendo recommends a UHS-I microSD card with transfer speeds of 60–95 MB/sec. Faster cards do not make the Switch operate at a higher-than-supported interface speed, but a reputable UHS-I card in that range is the recommended specification. UHS-II cards are not supported as UHS-II; they can function as ordinary microSD cards but will not run at UHS-II speed.

Full-size SD and miniSD cards do not fit the console’s slot, and external USB hard drives are not currently supported for game storage. Cards are sold separately; a Switch console does not include one in the box. Some games require additional storage even when purchased physically, so check the package or eShop listing before choosing capacity.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do I insert or remove the card safely?

  1. Locate the card slot under the rear stand on the original Switch and Switch OLED, or on the underside edge of Switch Lite. Nintendo identifies the model families as HAC-001, HEG-001 and HDH-001.
  2. With the card’s contacts oriented as shown by the slot marking, push it in until it clicks.
  3. The console can detect a card inserted while powered on, but it requires a restart. Restart when prompted before attempting a move.
  4. To remove it, power the console completely off, press the card once to release it, and pull it out. Do not remove it during a transfer.

What happens to new downloads after I insert a card?

Once a microSD card is inserted, downloadable software normally uses it as the default save location. If the card fills, new data can spill into system memory. You can move titles later with the same Data Management command.

This default behavior does not guarantee that every future update remains on the card. Nintendo specifically warns that continuing to play after a move can place new update data in the location you did not select. Treat the card as preferred storage, not a permanent rule for every file.

How do I move screenshots and videos to the card?

Screenshots and gameplay videos are separate from both software and saves, and they can be copied.

  2. Choose Data Management > Manage Screenshots and Videos.

  4. Choose Copy All Screenshots and Videos to SD Card.

For individual files, open Album on the HOME Menu and use its copy or move controls. Nintendo also documents copying media to a computer over USB from the screenshot manager. A microSD card’s extra capacity does not remove Nintendo’s overall screenshot-and-video file-count cap.

How do I upgrade to a larger microSD card?

Use Nintendo’s whole-card copy procedure when replacing a card with a larger one. The documented environment is a Windows PC. You need the original card, the new compatible card, a reader/writer (and a full-size SD adapter if your computer has only an SD slot), and enough temporary space on the PC.

  1. Format the new card in the Switch first. Insert it, open System Settings > System > Formatting Options > Format microSD Card (wording can vary), and confirm. Formatting erases everything on that card.
  2. Power off the console and remove the original card.
  3. Insert the original card into the Windows PC. In File Explorer, select the entire Nintendo data folder and drag it to the PC desktop or another temporary location.
  4. Eject the original card. Do not delete, format or alter it yet.
  5. Insert the newly formatted card and drag the complete folder from the temporary location onto it. Copy the folder as a whole; do not rename, edit or selectively merge files.
  6. Eject the new card safely, insert it into the Switch and start the console.
  7. Launch several transferred titles and verify that the console recognizes them before retiring the original card.

Nintendo warns against recopying onto the same card and against changing files inside the folder. Keep the original untouched until the new card works. If a title is not recognized, it can be redownloaded from Nintendo eShop; its save data remains in system memory.

Nintendo’s regional guidance cautions that copying in environments such as macOS may not copy all contents correctly. Windows is the officially documented route. Software downloaded to a card on console A will not play on console B, so a card is effectively paired with the system that prepared it.

Can I use multiple microSD cards with one console?

You can physically use more than one card over time, but Nintendo recommends one card per console and does not provide a merge operation. Keep a single card for your downloadable library whenever possible.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

Do not swap cards between multiple systems or combine folders from different cards. If you insert a card previously used by another Switch, the new console may prompt you to erase that console’s downloadable software, updates and DLC before it can use the card. Screenshots and videos can remain after the software erase; a full format removes those too. A system transfer does not bypass this card-specific erase behavior.

What should I do if the Move Data option is missing?

First, confirm that a compatible card is inserted, the console has restarted after insertion, and system software is version 10.0.0 or later. Then reopen System Settings > Data Management.

Some older regional FAQ pages still say to delete downloadable software and redownload it with a card inserted. That is a fallback, not the preferred current method where the dedicated Move Data screen is available:

  1. To remove several titles while keeping their HOME icons, open System Settings > Data Management > Quick Archive and select them.
  2. For one title, highlight its icon on HOME, press + or –, choose Manage Software > Archive Software.
  3. To remove the icon as well, choose Delete Software from the same management area.
  4. Redownload from the HOME icon or Nintendo eShop after confirming the card is inserted.

Archiving or deleting downloaded software does not delete the save data. Redownloading can require substantial bandwidth, and a discontinued title may no longer be available, so archive is safer when you want to preserve a convenient redownload icon.

How is Nintendo Switch 2 different?

Do not mix the storage instructions. Nintendo Switch 2 uses microSD Express for game storage; a standard microSD, microSDHC or microSDXC card used by the original Switch is not the Switch 2 game-storage card. Switch 2 save data also remains in system memory and cannot be copied to a microSD Express card.

Nintendo lists 256 GB of internal Switch 2 storage, with part reserved for system use. During a Switch 2 system transfer, Nintendo documents a possible prompt to swap cards and temporarily import screenshots and videos from an original Switch card. The procedures above are for the original Switch, Switch Lite and Switch OLED using standard microSD media.

Which storage method should I choose?

Your goal Best method Trade-off
Keep an installed game but free system memory Move Data Between System / microSD Card No redownload; saves stay in system memory and some updates may remain.
Free space immediately and you do not mind downloading again Archive or delete, then redownload with the card inserted Uses bandwidth and may not work for discontinued software.
Replace a small card with a larger one Windows whole-card copy Requires two cards and a reader; preserve the original until verified.
Protect game progress Keep the console save; use Nintendo’s save-transfer feature for a second console There is no microSD save backup.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will deleting a Switch game delete my progress?

No. Nintendo separates software from save data. Archiving or deleting a downloaded title removes its install files (and, for Delete Software, its HOME icon), while the save remains in system memory for that user. Redownloading the title normally restores access to that progress.

Can I play a microSD card from my old Switch on another Switch?

Not as a ready-made game library. Software downloaded to a card is tied to the console that used it, and another Switch may require the card’s software, updates and DLC to be erased. Redownload the titles on the second console and use Nintendo’s account and save-transfer procedures for user data.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does a faster or larger card make Switch games load faster?

Nintendo recommends UHS-I transfer performance of 60–95 MB/sec and does not support UHS-II operation. Capacity determines how much downloadable software fits; it does not turn the console into a higher-speed interface. Choose a reliable compatible card rather than buying an unsupported format.

Can I back up Switch saves to a computer with a USB cable?

Nintendo’s USB computer-copy guidance applies to screenshots and videos, not save data. Save records cannot be copied to a PC or microSD card through the console’s normal data-management tools. Use the console-to-console save-transfer feature when you need to move a save.

Why is some update data still in system memory after I moved a game?

Nintendo allows software moves but says some update data cannot be migrated. In addition, continuing to play after the transfer can create new update data in the other storage location. Check both System Memory and microSD usage in Data Management before assuming the move failed.
