Use nearby local save transfer for a one-time move between two Nintendo Switch consoles when both are available. It requires no Nintendo Switch Online membership, but the save is removed from the source console after sending. Use Save Data Cloud when you want an online recovery copy or access on another console signed in to the same Nintendo Account; it preserves the source save but requires Nintendo Switch Online and a compatible game.
Nintendo does not support copying Switch or Switch 2 saves to a microSD card or USB drive. Your practical choices are therefore a nearby transfer or, for supported titles, Save Data Cloud.

The choice depends on whether you are relocating a save or protecting it. A console replacement with both systems in hand favors local transfer. Ongoing protection, recovery after a failure, or playing on more than one console favors cloud backup whenever the game supports it.

Nearby local save transfer is a one-time move
The individual save workflow sends one game’s save from a source Switch or Switch 2 to a nearby target. The consoles must be online, close to one another, and using users linked to the same Nintendo Account. After the target receives the file, Nintendo deletes that save from the source. The procedure is therefore appropriate when the target is taking over, not when you intend to keep two independent copies.

Local transfer is also the fallback for a title that does not offer Save Data Cloud. It does not create an archival file that you can keep on removable storage or restore later without the other console.
Save Data Cloud keeps an account-linked copy
Save Data Cloud is part of Nintendo Switch Online. For a compatible game, the backup is tied to the Nintendo Account that owns the user save. You can download it on another Switch or Switch 2 where the game is playable, provided you sign in with that same account.
The cloud copy and the console’s current save are separate until you choose a download. A download replaces the destination’s existing save for that game, so cloud restore is not a merge operation and is not reversible after the replacement.
Understand the two irreversible actions
There are two different ways to lose the version you meant to keep. With a local send, the source save is deleted as part of a successful transfer. The target becomes the only console holding that save unless you later create a supported cloud backup. With a cloud download, Nintendo replaces the destination’s existing save with the selected online copy. The replaced destination data cannot be recovered through that download process.
These risks point to different checks. Before a local transfer, verify that the target is the console you want to use going forward and that the correct user and game are selected. Before a cloud download, compare the date and time shown for the cloud backup with the save already on the destination. If the destination is newer, downloading can roll back progress.
Neither method combines two progress histories. A newer local save and an older cloud save cannot be merged, and Nintendo does not merge save data belonging to different users. Decide which single version is authoritative before confirming.
Prepare both consoles before a local transfer
- Install the latest available system update on each console.
- Connect both systems to the internet and keep them physically near each other.
- Confirm that the source user and the corresponding target user are linked to the same Nintendo Account.
- Keep both consoles powered on and charged or connected to power while the transfer runs.
- Decide whether the source is being retired. The individual workflow removes the source save when sending finishes.
Make the account check on both systems before opening the transfer screens. Save data is associated with a user, not merely with the console, so selecting a different local user can lead you to the wrong save or prevent the intended pairing.
If you are moving an entire profile rather than one game’s progress, use Nintendo’s user-and-save transfer workflow instead. It moves the user profile and its associated saves and removes the transferred information from the original system. Both systems still need to be updated, online, and nearby.

Transfer one game’s save from one Switch to another
Use this procedure when you have both consoles and want to move a specific title.
- On the source console, open System Settings.
- Select Data Management, then Transfer Your Save Data.
- Choose Send Save Data to Another Console.
- Select the user and the game whose save should move, then follow the on-screen prompts to identify the nearby target console.
- On the target console, open System Settings → Data Management → Transfer Your Save Data.
- Choose Receive Save Data and complete the pairing and confirmation prompts on both systems.
- Launch the game on the target and verify the expected progress before changing or deleting anything else.
Important: Nintendo states, “This does not create a copy of your save data. Once sent, the save data file will be deleted from the source console.” Do not start this process if the old console must retain that progress.
Transfer only after closing the game and checking that its latest progress has been written to the source console. After receiving, launch the title on the target and inspect the relevant profile, world, or campaign. Verification is especially important before wiping, selling, or giving away the old system.

A full user-and-save transfer is better than repeating the individual procedure for every game when you are replacing a console. It carries the selected user profile and the saves associated with that profile to the new system, then removes the transferred information from the old one.
Use the full transfer route only when the destination should become the user’s primary system. It is different from a backup: the original does not keep a second usable copy. Update both consoles, connect them to the internet, place them nearby, and follow the user-transfer prompts shown in System Settings on each system.
Save data belongs to a specific user. Nintendo does not provide a way to merge one user’s save with another user’s save, so select the correct account before confirming a transfer.
Set up Save Data Cloud for supported games
Automatic and manual backups
When a Nintendo Switch Online membership begins, automatic backup is enabled for compatible software. You can also manage a title manually from its software menu or through System Settings → Data Management → Save Data Cloud.
- Start the game once with the intended Nintendo Account user.
- Open the game’s software menu and select its save-data-cloud option, or open System Settings → Data Management → Save Data Cloud.
- Select the user and title, then choose the available backup or download command.
- Check the displayed backup time after a successful upload so you know how current the online copy is.
Automatic backup is not a guarantee that every title is covered. Nintendo describes support as applying to the vast majority of Switch 2 and Switch games, but compatibility is title-specific.

For a frequently played game, open the cloud-management screen periodically and confirm that the timestamp advances after a session. If automatic backup is disabled for a particular title or a backup has not completed, use the manual command where available rather than assuming the latest session is online.
Check whether a game supports cloud backup
Look for the Save Data Cloud indication in the game’s eShop listing, Nintendo Store product details, or the game’s software menu. If the menu says the feature is unavailable, that title cannot use this service; there is no Nintendo-provided local file-backup alternative.
Download a backup on another console
- Sign in on the destination Switch or Switch 2 with the Nintendo Account that made the backup.
- Install or otherwise make the same game playable on that console.
- Open System Settings → Data Management → Save Data Cloud, select the user and game, and view the available backup.
- Compare the cloud timestamp with the save currently on the console.
- Download only after confirming that the cloud copy contains the progress you want to keep.
Nintendo warns, “Save data downloaded from the backup will replace the existing save data on the console for that game.” The overwritten destination save cannot be recovered, so a newer local timestamp should normally be kept instead of replaced by an older cloud copy.
Cloud access follows the account, not a particular piece of hardware. On a second console, the game must be playable and the user must sign in with the account that created the backup. A different account on the same console will not expose the original user’s cloud save.
Membership status and the 180-day window
Nintendo Switch Online is a continuing requirement for Save Data Cloud. If the membership expires, the online backups become inaccessible until service is restored. Nintendo says access can be restored by resubscribing within 180 days of expiration.
Plan around that window if a subscription is ending. Keep the console containing the current local save, note which games have recent cloud timestamps, and resubscribe before attempting a recovery download. The 180-day period is a recovery window, not a promise that cloud access remains permanently available without an active membership.
A local transfer is unaffected by membership status because it uses the two consoles directly. It still requires both consoles to be available, online, nearby, and associated with the same Nintendo Account.

Unsupported games
Some titles do not support Save Data Cloud. If you have both consoles, nearby transfer is the supported way to move an individual save for those games. If the old console is unavailable, Nintendo does not document an SD-card, USB, or other local-file method that can recreate the save.

Shared or unusual data
Save data is user-specific and cannot be merged between accounts. Animal Crossing: New Horizons uses a separate transfer process for its shared-island data, so do not assume the ordinary per-user save workflow covers an island or resident arrangement. Follow that game’s title-specific instructions.
The same caution applies whenever a title’s menu identifies a special transfer process. Check the game’s instructions before sending a generic user save, because a standard transfer may not represent shared data correctly.
Switch and Switch 2 compatibility
Nintendo allows saves to be shared between Switch 2 and Switch for compatible software. A Switch 2-exclusive feature or mode remains unavailable when the same software is used on the original Switch. Confirm that the destination console can run the game’s relevant version before transferring or downloading.
Compatibility is a prerequisite for both methods: a cloud backup cannot make an incompatible version playable, and a local transfer cannot carry Switch 2-only functionality back to the original Switch.
Can you back up Switch saves to an SD card or USB drive?
No. Nintendo’s FAQ states, “Local save data backups are not currently supported on Nintendo Switch 2 or Nintendo Switch.” A microSD card can store software and media, but it is not a supported destination for an independent save backup. A USB drive likewise cannot be used as a documented Switch save archive.
This limitation changes the planning decision: cloud backup is the only Nintendo-supported method that leaves an online recovery copy, while local transfer is a direct move between two consoles. Do not buy storage media expecting it to solve save protection; it cannot substitute for Nintendo Switch Online on a compatible title or for a second console during a local move.

Troubleshoot the common failure points
The transfer option is missing or cannot find the other console
- Check that both consoles are online and physically close.
- Install pending system updates on both systems.
- Verify that the source and target users are linked to the same Nintendo Account.
- Return to System Settings → Data Management → Transfer Your Save Data on both consoles and start the send and receive roles on the correct systems.
The game has no cloud option
Confirm support in the eShop listing, Nintendo Store details, and the software menu. If all indicate that Save Data Cloud is unavailable, use nearby transfer while both consoles are available. Do not try to substitute a microSD card or USB drive.

The cloud backup is older than the console save
Stop before selecting download. Compare the timestamps shown for the cloud and local saves, keep the newer progress on the destination, and upload the current console save when the game’s menu allows it.

You cannot access a backup after membership ended
Resubscribe to Nintendo Switch Online within the stated 180-day access window, then sign in with the original Nintendo Account. If the membership has been inactive beyond that window, do not assume the backup is still retrievable.
The destination is a Switch rather than a Switch 2
Check software compatibility first. A save may be transferable between the systems for compatible software, while features exclusive to the Switch 2 version will not run on the original Switch.

- Identify whether you need a move or a recoverable copy.
- Check the game’s Save Data Cloud support before relying on cloud backup.
- Use the same Nintendo Account on the relevant users.
- For local transfer, update, connect, and place both consoles nearby.
- For cloud restore, compare timestamps before downloading.
- Remember that local sending deletes the source save and cloud downloading replaces the destination save.
- Handle shared-data titles through their separate instructions.
- Keep the current console available until the target launches the game correctly.
- If membership is ending, remember the 180-day resubscription window for cloud access.
- Do not expect a microSD card or USB drive to provide a save archive.
