There is no single Nintendo Switch demo time limit. A regular demo follows the rules set by its publisher, while a Nintendo Switch Online Game Trial is a downloadable full game that remains playable only for a title- or event-specific period. Cloud-version trials are different again: they stream the game, require a stable high-speed connection, and may limit you to a fixed number of attempts.
The important purchase question is save data. Nintendo says a Game Trial’s save is not deleted when the trial ends, so purchasing the full game lets you continue. That explicit promise applies to Game Trials; ordinary demos and cloud trials can have different save rules.
Demo, Game Trial, and cloud trial: what is the difference?
Nintendo uses “Game Trial” for “a free, downloadable full version of a game made available to Nintendo Switch Online members.” It is not the same product as a conventional demo. A Game Trial normally contains the full software package, but a license or event timer controls how long it can be played.
Recommended Free Tools
A conventional demo is a separate, limited build. Its content, duration, offline behavior, save design, and eligibility are decided for that particular title. A listing may offer a short section of the game, a level cap, or another publisher-defined restriction. There is no Nintendo-wide rule that all ordinary demos last the same number of hours.

Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
A cloud-version trial does not download the game in the usual way. The Switch receives a video stream while your inputs are sent to a remote server. Nintendo describes these trials as requiring a stable high-speed connection; some brief trials also restrict the number of launches or attempts, and that count cannot be reset.
How long can you play a Nintendo Switch demo?
Regular demos
Check the individual Nintendo eShop page or the publisher’s listing. The page is the authority for whether the demo expires, limits content, or can be replayed. Do not infer a time limit from another game’s demo, even if both are from the same publisher.
Downloadable Game Trials
The period is set for the specific title or event. Nintendo does not publish one universal number of hours or days. The remaining time can be viewed from the game’s icon on the Switch HOME Menu, so check there before starting a long session or purchasing downloadable content.

Cloud-version trials
Cloud trials may last only briefly and can be limited by attempts instead of a conventional countdown. If the service says you have used all attempts, Nintendo says the count cannot be reset. A fast connection does not extend the authorized trial period.
Do Nintendo Switch demos require Nintendo Switch Online?
Ordinary demos
Do not assume that every standard demo needs a Nintendo Switch Online membership. Access is controlled by the title’s eShop listing and publisher terms. The same listing should also identify any separate requirements for online features.
Game Trials
Nintendo’s definition makes Game Trials available to Nintendo Switch Online members. If a Game Trial does not appear as available to your account, verify that the correct Nintendo Account is linked to the console and that the membership is active for the region in which the trial is offered.

Internet versus membership
Membership and connectivity are separate questions. Nintendo says a Game Trial needs internet to download and to access it initially after a console restart. Online play and other online features require an internet connection while you use them. A trial that has already been started should not be treated as permanently independent of those checks; plan to connect the console before launching after a restart.

What happens to your save when a Game Trial ends?
Nintendo’s explicit answer is yes: Game Trial save data is not deleted when the trial ends, so buying the full game lets you pick up where you left off. The trial software becomes unplayable, but the progress remains on the console for the corresponding user.
Where Switch save data is stored
Switch save data is stored in the console’s system memory, not on a microSD card. It is generally associated with the user profile selected when the game was played. Archiving or deleting the downloaded software does not delete that save data, so removing the trial to free storage does not by itself erase progress.
What is not guaranteed for every demo
The Game Trial statement is a specific Nintendo guarantee. A normal third-party demo may use a separate save format, may not save at all, or may require a fresh start in the full release. Cloud-version trials can also have title-specific rules. Before relying on a transfer, read the individual listing or the publisher’s support information; do not treat the Game Trial policy as a universal demo policy.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesContinuing after purchase
Purchase the same full title with the Nintendo Account and user profile that created the trial progress. After the entitlement is installed, launch the game normally and choose the existing user. If the game presents multiple save choices, select the local save created by the trial. A different user profile can have separate progress even on the same console.

Can you use DLC during a Switch Game Trial?
Yes. Nintendo says downloadable content purchased for a Game Trial works while the trial is active. The DLC does not turn the trial into a permanent license, however. When the trial period ends, the game and its associated content cannot be used unless you purchase the supporting full game.
That makes timing important. Buying an expansion near the end of a trial gives you only the remaining trial window until the base game is purchased. Confirm that the DLC belongs to the exact edition and region of the trial; add-ons for a different release may not be recognized.
What happens when a trial expires?
Downloadable Game Trial
At expiration, the software is no longer playable. Nintendo says the save is not deleted, so purchasing the full game restores access to the existing Game Trial progress. Any DLC bought for the trial also remains unusable until the supporting full game is owned.
Cloud-version trial
A cloud trial stops when its time or attempt allowance is exhausted. Because the software is streamed, you also lose access if the service cannot establish the required connection. Attempt limits cannot be reset according to Nintendo’s guidance.

Standard demo
The result depends on the demo’s own terms. Some remain available indefinitely, while others are withdrawn or disabled after an event. The eShop page and publisher support page are the reliable sources for that title.

How to check a trial before you start
- Open the title’s eShop listing. Confirm whether it is a standard demo, a Game Trial, or a cloud version. Read the listed end date, content restrictions, membership requirement, and any attempt limit.
- Confirm the user profile. Start the software with the profile that will own the eventual save. Saves are generally tied to that selected user.
- Prepare an internet connection. Downloadable Game Trials need internet for installation and for the initial access check after a console restart. Cloud trials need a stable high-speed connection throughout play.
- Check the HOME Menu timer. Highlight the Game Trial’s icon on the HOME Menu to view the remaining time. Record the event’s end date if the listing supplies one.
- Review DLC compatibility. If you plan to buy an add-on, verify that it matches the trial’s title and edition. It will function during a Game Trial but not after expiration without the full game.
- Decide before the deadline. If the trial is fun, buy the matching full title with the account that created the save. The Game Trial save can then be used to continue.
Troubleshooting common problems
The Game Trial will not launch after a restart
Connect the Switch to the internet and try again. Nintendo requires online access to download the trial and to access it initially after a console restart. Also verify that the console is using the Nintendo Account and membership eligible for that Game Trial.
The trial icon says time is up
The software has reached the title- or event-defined limit and cannot be played until you purchase the full game. Do not delete the software in an attempt to reset the clock; the limit is an entitlement rule, not a local installation timer.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Your progress is missing after buying the game
Launch the full game with the same Switch user profile used for the trial. Remember that saves reside in system memory and are associated with the selected user, so changing profiles can make valid progress appear absent. Archiving or reinstalling the software does not normally remove the save.
DLC is installed but unavailable
During an active Game Trial, confirm that the add-on matches the title and region. After the trial ends, the DLC remains inaccessible until the supporting full game is purchased; reinstalling the add-on cannot bypass that requirement.
A cloud trial ends unexpectedly
Check both the connection quality and the remaining attempt allowance. A cloud trial can stop because streaming is unstable or because its permitted attempts have been consumed. Nintendo says an exhausted attempt count cannot be reset.
Quick Recap
Practical answers at a glance
- How long? A regular demo and a Game Trial have title-specific limits; a cloud trial may use a short session or attempt limit.
- Is Nintendo Switch Online required? Nintendo Switch Online Game Trials are for eligible members. Ordinary demos have title-specific access rules.
- Does the save carry over? Nintendo explicitly preserves Game Trial saves for continuation after purchase. Other demos and cloud trials require a title-specific confirmation.
- Can DLC be used? Game Trial DLC works while the trial is active, then requires ownership of the full game.
- What does expiration do? It disables play, not the retained Game Trial save; cloud attempts cannot be reset once consumed.
