You do not need a capture card to play a Nintendo Switch on a TV: connect the dock’s HDMI OUT port directly to the TV. A capture card is for sending Switch video and audio to a computer for recording or streaming. The console must be docked; the Switch Lite cannot be docked and is not compatible with game capture devices, according to OBS Project.
Do you need a capture card to connect a Switch to a TV?
No. For ordinary TV play, place the Switch console in its dock, connect the dock’s HDMI OUT port to an HDMI input on the TV or monitor, and follow Nintendo’s TV connection instructions. A capture card adds no necessary function to this setup.
If by “computer” you mean using a computer display as a screen, check whether that display has an HDMI input. The capture-card workflow below is for using a computer to receive, record, or stream the console’s signal; it is not a general guide to connecting a Switch to any computer monitor.
What a capture card does for Switch gameplay
A capture card sends the docked console’s HDMI video and audio to a computer so compatible software can capture it. OBS describes a game capture device as the hardware needed to capture console footage in OBS. Some cards also have an HDMI output for sending a second signal to a TV or monitor, letting you play on that display while the computer receives the capture feed.

Switch compatibility: docked models and Switch Lite
OBS Project’s FAQ, “How do I capture footage from my game console?”, states: “The Nintendo Switch family of systems is compatible with game capture devices when docked; however, the Nintendo Switch Lite is not compatible with game capture devices as it cannot be docked.” See the OBS game capture FAQ for the compatibility guidance.

How to connect a docked Switch to a computer for capture
- Dock the console. The capture workflow requires a Switch that can be docked.
- Connect the dock to the capture card. Run an HDMI cable from the dock’s HDMI OUT port to the card’s HDMI IN port.
- Connect the card to the computer. Use the card’s computer interface, such as USB, and open capture software that supports the device.
- Add the capture device in the software. Select the card as the video and audio source in the supported application, such as OBS where compatibility is listed.
- Connect a display for passthrough if wanted. If the card has HDMI OUT and you want to play on a TV or monitor, connect that output to the display’s HDMI input.
For TV-only play, skip the capture card and connect dock HDMI OUT directly to the display as described by Nintendo.

They are separate capabilities, and the HD60 X documentation lists both categories.
