For the strongest family setup, configure game restrictions on the console, use Nintendo’s free Parental Controls app for play-time limits and GameChat management, and set spending and eShop restrictions in the parent or guardian’s Nintendo Account family-group settings. These are separate controls: setting an age rating on the console does not block a child’s eShop purchases, and console-only setup does not provide the app’s time limits or activity reports. Most game and time restrictions apply to everyone using that console, so set them with its youngest player in mind.
This guide covers the console-only and app-linked setup paths, what each one controls, how to close the eShop spending gap, and how to decide whether a child can use GameChat.
Which parental controls should you set up?
Think of Nintendo Switch 2 parental controls as three related control surfaces, not one master switch: console settings for game ratings and in-game communication, the phone app for time limits and activity reports, and Nintendo Account family settings for a child’s eShop spending and age-based store visibility. GameChat has additional user-specific controls in the app.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsHere is the practical division:
| Control surface | What it can manage | Important limit |
|---|---|---|
| Console: System Settings > Parental Controls | Game-rating restrictions and in-game communication settings | Most restrictions are console-wide rather than different for each player. |
| Nintendo Switch Parental Controls app | Daily play-time limits, bedtime, play activity, and a child’s GameChat permissions | Requires a parent’s Nintendo Account, a compatible iOS or Android phone, and internet connectivity to use. |
| Parent or guardian’s Nintendo Account family group | Spending restrictions and age-based eShop content restrictions for a supervised child | These account settings are separate from the console’s Restricted Software setting. |
Nintendo’s Switch 2 parental-controls setup guide and parental-controls overview describe the console and app controls. Nintendo’s family-group spending instructions cover the account-level controls.

Do you need the app, or can you set controls on the console alone?
You can set game-rating and in-game communication restrictions directly on Switch 2 without linking the app. Choose the console-only route if you do not want app features; choose the app-linked route if you also want screen-time limits, activity reports, or control of a supervised child’s GameChat.
Console-only setup does not enable a daily play-time limit or bedtime schedule. Conversely, linking the app does not replace the need to configure eShop purchase restrictions in the family group. If you only want age-related game restrictions, the console is enough; if you want the broader set of controls, plan to use all three surfaces.
What should you prepare before setup?
For basic console restrictions, you need access to the Switch 2 and a private PIN. For app-linked controls, prepare a compatible iOS or Android phone and the parent’s Nintendo Account login. Nintendo’s app is free, but using it requires internet connectivity. For account-specific eShop settings or child-specific GameChat management, the child’s Nintendo Account needs to be part of the adult’s family group as a supervised account.
Nintendo says parent or guardian status is for eligible non-supervised accounts aged 18 or older. If your family already has accounts, check which account is the parent or guardian and whether the child is supervised before you start. Families that do not plan to allow GameChat do not have to complete a separate GameChat setup just to use basic console restrictions.
How do you set basic controls on the console without the app?
Use the console-only route to choose a restriction level for game ratings and in-game communication. It takes place on Switch 2 itself and does not set daily play-time limits.
- From the HOME Menu, open System Settings > Parental Controls > Set Up Parental Controls.
- To continue without linking a phone, press X, then select Next.
- Choose Restriction Level, then select Child, Pre-Teen, Teen, or Custom Settings.
- Follow the on-screen prompts, then create and confirm a PIN of four to eight digits.
Keep the PIN private from the child whose access you are restricting, but store it somewhere the responsible adults can retrieve it. A forgotten PIN can prevent a parent from changing settings conveniently, so do not rely on memory alone if multiple adults share management.
The preset labels are starting points, not a guarantee that every game or communication feature will match your family’s needs. Check the regional age rating of games your child wants to play, and review in-game communication separately. Nintendo notes that the rating organization follows the user’s region, so the rating scheme may differ from US examples.

How do you link the Parental Controls app to Switch 2?
Linking the free Nintendo Switch Parental Controls app enables play-time limits, bedtime, activity reports, and app management of GameChat. The phone and console must both be online during setup, and the parent uses their Nintendo Account to connect them.
- Install Nintendo Switch Parental Controls on an iOS or Android phone and sign in with the parent’s Nintendo Account.
- In the app, display the six-digit Link Code.
- On Switch 2, open System Settings > Parental Controls > Set Up Parental Controls.
- Select App Has Been Installed, enter the six-digit code, and confirm the link on both the console and phone.
If you already configured controls locally, the console may show Change Settings instead of the initial setup flow. Enter the existing PIN, choose the option to set up controls in the app, and continue to App Has Been Installed. If the console says the code is invalid, check that you are entering the current six-digit code shown in the app and that the parent account is the account you intend to use.
After linking, make your choices in the app and allow the console to connect online so changes can take effect. Nintendo says app changes take effect when the console next connects to the internet; do not assume a new limit has reached an offline console immediately.
How should you choose a game restriction level?
Choose the restriction level against the youngest person who uses that console, then adjust for the games and communication features that matter to your family. The console’s restriction is generally shared across users, so a setting suitable for an older sibling may still be too permissive for a younger one.
The built-in choices are Child, Pre-Teen, Teen, and Custom Settings. A preset is a quick starting point; Custom Settings are useful when you want to allow some content or communication while restricting other categories. Use the ratings applicable in your region rather than assuming that US rating labels apply everywhere.
The app also offers an Allow List for an individual game that would otherwise be Restricted Software. An exception for a game does not exempt it from the daily play-time limit. That distinction is useful when a family is comfortable with one specific game but still wants a consistent time rule.
In-game communication is a separate decision from the game’s age rating and from GameChat. A child might be allowed to play a particular title while communication with other players remains restricted. Review the in-game Communicating with Others setting independently, and do not assume that changing it grants or removes GameChat permissions.

How do you set a play-time limit and bedtime?
Set time rules in the Parental Controls app under Parental Controls > Play-Time Limit. You can choose a daily limit, vary the limit by day, and set a bedtime and next-morning restart time.
- Open the app and select the linked console.
- Open Parental Controls > Play-Time Limit.
- Choose the daily time allowance. If weekday and weekend schedules should differ, turn on Vary by Day and set each day as needed.
- Set bedtime and the time play can resume the next morning if you want a no-play window overnight.
- Choose what happens when the limit is reached: a notification, or suspension of play.
If you set both a duration limit and a bedtime, whichever restriction arrives first applies. For example, a child who reaches the daily allowance before bedtime will hit the duration limit first; a child who has remaining time when bedtime begins will be stopped by the bedtime rule. Review the schedule against your household routine rather than treating the two settings as interchangeable.
Nintendo states that the Play-Time Limit is set for the console and restricts all individual users of that system equally. In other words, it is not a separate daily allowance for each sibling. The app can show activity by user where Nintendo can associate that activity with a user, but that does not make the time limit itself user-specific.
Does the time-up alarm stop play?
No. A time-limit notification can serve as a reminder without stopping a game. If you want play to end when the limit is reached, enable Suspend Play When Time’s Up in the app’s play-time settings.
This is an important choice for families. A notification-only setup leaves the child able to continue unless they act on the reminder; suspension enforces the stop. Consider explaining which setting you chose and how bedtime or remaining time will work so that the limit is predictable rather than a surprise. The time rule applies console-wide, even if different users have different play histories.

Use the parent or guardian’s Nintendo Account family-group settings to restrict a supervised child’s spending and, if desired, the age-based content visible in the eShop. The console’s game-rating setting alone does not block purchases or hide eShop listings.
- Sign in to the parent or guardian’s Nintendo Account.
- Open the Family group and select the supervised child’s account.
- Set the child’s Spending Restrictions. Choose the restriction that disables purchases and auto-renewal options if that is your goal.
- If you also want to limit what appears in the store, set Age-Based Content Restrictions.
- Save the changes.
Nintendo says the spending restriction applies to purchases and auto-renewal options on Switch 2, Switch, and the Nintendo Store for that account. The age-based content restriction affects what that child can see in the eShop. These settings address different concerns: one limits spending actions, while the other limits store content visibility.

After saving, verify that you edited the intended supervised child’s account rather than the parent’s account or a sibling’s profile. If your goal is to prevent purchases, do not stop after selecting a game-rating restriction on the console; that is not a substitute for the family-group spending control.
How do you decide whether to allow GameChat?
GameChat is optional and should be treated as a separate social permission decision. For a supervised user or a user under 16, a parent manages the child’s GameChat controls in the app; video has its own permission and is not required for voice chat.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Nintendo’s parent walkthrough involves establishing family roles, linking the console and app, verifying the phone number registered to the Nintendo Account, and then allowing the child to request friends for parent approval. Parents can approve friends, review who the child chatted with and for how long, and decide whether video is allowed for each session or not at all. During a video chat, the parent can also change the camera’s field of view.
Choose among three practical approaches:
- GameChat off: appropriate if your family does not want the child using the feature. Basic game restrictions can still be set without completing GameChat setup.
- Voice only: allow voice chat if appropriate, while leaving video unapproved. A camera is not needed for voice chat.
- Video by approval: permit video only when a parent allows it for a session, and consider whether the child should be allowed to add or chat with friends only after approval.
GameChat requires a Nintendo Switch Online membership and a persistent internet connection. That membership is a GameChat requirement, not a subscription needed for basic parental controls. GameChat is not available in all countries, so check Nintendo’s regional availability before relying on the feature.
Do you need to buy a camera for GameChat?
No. A camera is optional unless your family chooses video chat; voice-only GameChat does not require one, and neither do the parental-controls app or basic console restrictions. If you do want video, Nintendo identifies a dedicated USB-C camera accessory with a built-in privacy shutter, but this guide does not require a purchase recommendation to complete setup.
Nintendo says an existing USB-C camera may work, but some cameras are unsupported or unstable. Before buying or relying on one you already own, connect it and use System Settings > Controllers & Accessories > Test USB Camera. A camera’s presence does not itself authorize a child to use video; the parent’s GameChat permission choice remains separate.

What should you check after transferring from an original Switch?
Nintendo says a system transfer from an original Switch can transfer existing parental-control settings. Still, review the resulting settings on Switch 2 before relying on them, especially the restriction level, linked app, time rules, and account-specific eShop controls.
A transfer does not remove the need to confirm that the controls match your current family setup. Recheck which players use the new console, whether the youngest player is adequately covered by console-wide restrictions, and whether the child’s supervised Nintendo Account still has the desired spending and eShop restrictions.

Use this final check to catch the most common gaps:
- On the console, confirm the restriction level and review in-game communication separately.
- Confirm whether the Parental Controls app is linked; if it is not, do not expect daily limits, bedtime, or activity reports.
- In the app, decide whether time-up is a notification or a suspension, and confirm the limit and bedtime schedule.
- Remember that the time limit is console-wide, even if activity can be reviewed by user.
- In the parent or guardian’s family group, set the supervised child’s spending restriction and age-based eShop content restriction separately if needed.
- For supervised or under-16 users, decide whether GameChat is off, voice-only, or allowed with video approval, and verify the applicable membership and regional availability.
- If video is permitted, test the camera through System Settings > Controllers & Accessories > Test USB Camera rather than assuming every USB-C camera will work.
Menu wording and feature availability can vary by region. Nintendo’s support pages used here are US/Americas-facing, and Nintendo notes that GameChat is unavailable in some countries. Check the support pages for your region if a label or feature does not appear as described.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I change Nintendo Switch 2 parental controls remotely?
When the console is linked to the app, parents can manage the app’s supported settings from the phone, but Nintendo says changes take effect on the console the next time it connects online. If the console stays offline, do not assume a newly changed rule has been applied yet.
Can I give each child a different Switch 2 play-time limit?
No: Nintendo describes the Play-Time Limit as a console setting that restricts all individual users of that system equally. If children need different limits, this console-wide behavior is a constraint to account for when deciding which players share the device.

Possibly, but Nintendo says some USB-C cameras are unsupported or unstable. Check the specific camera with the console’s Test USB Camera option before relying on it for video chat.
Does a Nintendo Switch Online membership unlock parental controls?
No membership is needed for basic parental controls or the Parental Controls app. Nintendo Switch Online is required for GameChat, so the subscription question matters only if your family intends to use that feature.
