Does GameChat require Nintendo Switch Online?
Yes. Nintendo Support says GameChat requires a Nintendo Switch Online membership and a persistent internet connection. Nintendo’s service FAQ describes Nintendo Switch Online as a paid membership service that includes GameChat: Nintendo Switch Online Service FAQ.
The temporary membership-free Open-Access Period ran from June 5, 2025, through March 31, 2026. It has ended, so older launch-period advice that GameChat is free to all Switch 2 owners is no longer current. Requirements and membership terms can vary by country and may change; check Nintendo’s local service details before subscribing.
What do you need to use GameChat?
- A Nintendo Switch 2 console. GameChat is a Switch 2 feature.
- A Nintendo Account and Nintendo Switch Online membership.
- A persistent internet connection.
- Friends on each other’s friend lists to connect through GameChat. Younger and supervised users also need those friends approved by a parent or guardian.
- A compatible USB camera only if you want to use video.
Nintendo’s GameChat Guide and FAQ describes groups of up to 12 friends. Up to four players in a group can use video chat and/or share their game screen in real time. The group can include people playing the same game, different games, or no game at all.

Those room limits do not determine whether a particular game supports multiplayer. GameChat does not provide game copies or multiplayer access; Nintendo notes that playing multiplayer may require additional games, systems, or accessories.
Do you need a camera or microphone?
Voice chat works without a camera
Switch 2 has a built-in microphone, so no separate microphone or camera is required for voice chat. Nintendo’s GameChat Guide and FAQ says the built-in microphone lets players start chatting right away.
Video needs a compatible USB camera
For video, Nintendo offers the optional Nintendo Switch 2 Camera, a dedicated USB-C accessory. Nintendo says it can be used in TV, tabletop, and handheld modes by plugging it into the USB-C port on top of the console. It is sold separately. Other USB cameras may work, but Nintendo does not guarantee third-party camera compatibility. Do not assume that any USB webcam will work: connect it and use the console’s Test USB Camera feature in system settings. Standard USB cameras may also connect through the dock, according to Nintendo Support’s setup guidance.

Can a child use GameChat?
Yes, but Nintendo requires GameChat parental controls to be configured in the Nintendo Switch Parental Controls smart-device app for users under 16 and for supervised users. A parent or guardian must also approve the friends the child can contact. Nintendo’s parent and guardian setup guide covers creating or joining a Nintendo Account family group, linking the console to the app, configuring controls, and starting GameChat.
The guide says the parent’s registered phone number is used for verification messages when a younger player wants to use GameChat. Nintendo’s documentation does not establish that this entails a particular message charge or that verification works identically in every country.

Set up parental controls and approve friends
- Set up the child’s Nintendo Account in the family group and link the Switch 2 console to the Nintendo Switch Parental Controls app, following Nintendo’s GameChat setup guide.
- Configure GameChat parental controls in the app before the child tries to use the feature.
- Approve the friends the child may contact. A child cannot use GameChat with unapproved friends; if no friends are approved, the child cannot invite anyone or accept room invitations.
- Choose the video permission that fits your family: require approval each session or disallow camera use. With approval required each session, the child must request permission again for a new room.
What parents can and cannot control
The parental controls include camera-view options Nintendo describes as face only, person only, or full video. Parents can also review Play Activity and Monthly Summary information, including who the child chatted with and for how long. Nintendo says the camera permission setting does not restrict screen sharing. These controls help manage contacts and video use, but they are not a guarantee that every interaction will be safe. Nintendo says players can report offensive or harassing behavior; confirmed cases may result in action such as suspension of the Nintendo Account.
