Some original Nintendo Switch accessories work with Switch 2, but compatibility depends on what the accessory does. Original Joy-Con and the original Pro Controller can pair wirelessly; the old dock cannot be reused for Switch 2 TV mode, and expanded game storage requires a microSD Express card. Compatibility is not reversible: Joy-Con 2 and the Switch 2 Pro Controller do not work with the original Switch. The guide below separates pairing, physical fit, charging, TV output and storage so you can tell what you can keep and what you need to replace.

Nintendo’s compatibility guidance describes which original controllers and accessories can be used with Switch 2. The two directions are not interchangeable: an accessory that works with the newer console does not necessarily work with the older one.
Can I use my old Joy-Con on Switch 2?
Yes. Nintendo says original Joy-Con can connect to Switch 2 wirelessly, but they do not physically attach to the console or charge from it. They are useful as separate controllers, not as a way to turn the larger console into a handheld with the old controllers mounted on its sides.

The original Joy-Con use rails, while Joy-Con 2 attach magnetically. That difference is why the older controllers can communicate with Switch 2 but cannot click onto its sides; it also explains why newer fitted accessories are not substitutes for original Joy-Con accessories. Nintendo’s controller compatibility information distinguishes wireless use from physical attachment.

Plan how to charge them
Because Switch 2 does not charge original Joy-Con, keep an original Switch available or use a charging accessory designed for original Joy-Con. Nintendo identifies the original Joy-Con Charging Grip and suitable two-way charging stand as options. A Joy-Con 2 charging grip is shaped for the newer controller and will not solve the charging problem for the old pair.
This distinction matters most if you are keeping the old controllers after passing on or storing the original console. Before relying on them as your only extra controllers, check that you still have a compatible charging method; wireless pairing alone does not keep their batteries topped up.
Does the original Switch Pro Controller work on Switch 2?
Yes. The original Pro Controller pairs wirelessly with Switch 2, so there is no need to replace it just to have a traditional wireless controller. Nintendo also says it can charge over USB from the Switch 2 dock.

It remains the older controller, however. It does not gain the Switch 2 Pro Controller’s C or GL/GR buttons, so whether it suits you depends on the controls a particular game or feature expects. Basic wireless compatibility should not be confused with feature parity between the two models.
The direction changes if you want to use a newer controller on an older console: Nintendo says the Switch 2 Pro Controller does not work with the original Switch. The same one-way rule applies to Joy-Con 2. For model-specific answers, see Nintendo’s controller FAQ.

Will original Joy-Con accessories fit Joy-Con 2?
Generally, no: accessories shaped to fit original Joy-Con are for those controllers, and the newer fitted parts are for Joy-Con 2. When checking an accessory, identify which controller it physically holds rather than assuming a product will fit because both controllers belong to the Switch family.
Straps, grips, wheels and battery packs
Original Joy-Con straps, grips, wheels, charging accessories and AA battery packs are designed around the original controllers. They do not become Joy-Con 2 accessories just because the old Joy-Con can pair with Switch 2. Conversely, newer straps and the newer charging grip do not accept original Joy-Con. If you intend to keep using a particular grip or wheel, retain the original Joy-Con that fits it.
Ring-Con and Leg Strap
The original Ring-Con and Leg Strap remain useful on Switch 2 for their respective supported games, provided you use original Joy-Con with them. They are not Joy-Con 2 attachments. Their continued usefulness therefore depends on keeping the old controllers as well as the game that supports the accessory.
Can I reuse the old dock, power adapter or HDMI cable?
The original Switch dock is not compatible with Switch 2, so it cannot provide the newer console’s TV mode. Nintendo states plainly, “The Nintendo Switch dock is not compatible with Nintendo Switch 2.” A Switch 2 Dock Set is the relevant option if you need a replacement or an additional TV setup.
Charging a console versus powering a dock
Nintendo says the original Switch AC adapter can charge Switch 2 when connected directly to the console. It cannot power the Switch 2 dock for TV mode. Those are separate jobs: direct charging does not establish that an adapter can supply the dock’s requirements for displaying gameplay on a television.

The Switch 2 AC adapter works with both Switch generations, according to Nintendo. If you need the newer dock to run TV mode, use the appropriate Switch 2 adapter rather than treating an older adapter’s direct-charging ability as equivalent. Nintendo’s dock and power guidance covers these distinctions.
HDMI cable
Nintendo lists the original Switch HDMI cable as incompatible with Switch 2 and recommends the HDMI cable included with the newer console. That is Nintendo’s compatibility designation; it is not a claim that the old cable can never produce a picture on any display. If setting up Switch 2 TV mode, use the included cable rather than assuming an older cable is supported.
Do I need a new microSD card for Switch 2?
For expanded Switch 2 game storage, yes: the card must be microSD Express. An ordinary microSD card from an original Switch cannot store Switch 2 games. It can still be used to view or import captures from an original Switch, so “not supported for game storage” does not mean the old card has no use at all.
Check the card type before buying
Look for the words “microSD Express” on the card and its packaging; an ordinary microSD card is a different format for this purpose. Nintendo’s Australian storage guidance says Switch 2 supports microSD Express cards up to 2TB. Nintendo of America lists a Samsung microSD Express Card at 256GB in its Switch 2 accessories catalog; that listing identifies a product, not a required capacity or a claim that other cards have been tested here.
Using an Express card on the original Switch
A microSD Express card also works in the original Switch, but at ordinary microSD speeds rather than Express speeds. Nintendo Australia says an internet system update is required the first time an Express card is used on Switch 2. The format is therefore usable across both systems, but the performance and supported functions depend on which console is reading it.

Which other original accessories work on Switch 2?
Some older accessories remain useful, but the connection method and supported game matter. A familiar controller or accessory should not be assumed to work merely because it was made for a Nintendo console.
Older GameCube controllers
Older wired GameCube controllers can be used with Switch 2 through the GameCube Controller Adapter, connected to the Switch 2 dock in TV mode. This is different from Nintendo’s newer wireless GameCube Controller, which is for Switch 2 only. If you are keeping a wired controller, the adapter and docked-TV requirement are part of the setup, not optional details.
NES, SNES, N64 and SEGA Genesis controllers
Nintendo also lists original NES, SNES, Nintendo 64 and SEGA Genesis controllers as usable wirelessly on Switch 2 for compatible games. The NES controllers need an original Switch or suitable charging accessory for charging; the SNES, N64 and SEGA Genesis controllers can charge by USB from the Switch 2 dock. Their usefulness is tied to games that support those controllers, rather than a promise that every Switch 2 game accepts them.
Original Switch stylus
Nintendo UK’s compatibility guide lists the original Switch stylus as compatible with Switch 2. This is a region-specific detail from Nintendo UK; it does not mean every accessory made for the original console appears on the broader compatibility list.

Cases and cameras need separate checks because fit and device support are model-specific. Nintendo says Switch 2 is larger and offers a case and screen protector sized for the newer console, but that does not establish that every older case is unusable.

Check a case by its dimensions
Compare the old case’s stated internal dimensions with the Switch 2’s dimensions before carrying the console in it. A case with sufficient room may fit, but the available data does not establish universal compatibility for any old case model. The same caution applies to protectors: screen size and fit are more relevant than the brand name or the fact that a protector was sold for the original Switch.
USB-C cameras are not guaranteed
The dedicated Switch 2 Camera is optional for video features. Nintendo says another USB-C camera may work, but warns that some devices are unsupported or unstable; there is no basis for promising compatibility for an unnamed webcam. To check an individual camera, use System Settings → Controllers & Accessories → Test USB Camera, as described in Nintendo’s camera support guidance.
How should I decide what to keep?
Start with the function you need, then check whether the accessory is wireless, physically fitted, used for power, or tied to a particular storage format. That avoids common false equivalences, such as treating a controller that pairs as one that mounts, or a charger that charges the console as one that can run its dock.
- For extra controllers: Keep original Joy-Con or the original Pro Controller if wireless play is your goal. Remember that original Joy-Con require a separate charging solution.
- For handheld use: Do not plan to attach original Joy-Con to Switch 2. Their compatibility is wireless, not rail-based or magnetic mounting.
- For TV play: Plan on a Switch 2 dock, its compatible power arrangement and the included HDMI cable; the original dock does not serve this purpose.
- For game storage: Choose microSD Express, not an ordinary microSD card. Retain an ordinary card only for the capture-related use Nintendo specifies.
- For fitted accessories: Match straps, grips, wheels, charging parts and battery packs to the exact Joy-Con generation they were designed for.
- For older specialty gear: Check the game and connection path. For example, wired GameCube controllers require their adapter and the dock in TV mode.
- For cases and cameras: Verify dimensions or test the specific camera using the console’s camera test setting instead of relying on a general compatibility assumption.
Nintendo’s compatibility pages do not publish a tested percentage or failure rate for third-party accessories. For any third-party dock, charger, camera, case or cable not named in the official guidance, compatibility remains model-specific rather than guaranteed.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can an original Joy-Con wake Switch 2 from sleep?
Nintendo UK’s guide says original controllers cannot wake Switch 2 from sleep using their HOME buttons. If waking the console from a controller is important, check the specific controller’s supported features rather than assuming wireless pairing includes that function.
Can I use my old NES or N64 controller with Switch 2?
Nintendo lists original NES, SNES, N64 and SEGA Genesis controllers as wireless options for compatible games. NES controllers need an original Switch or suitable charging accessory, while the other listed retro controllers can charge by USB from the Switch 2 dock.
What is the largest microSD Express card Switch 2 supports?
Nintendo Australia’s storage guidance states support for microSD Express cards up to 2TB. The guidance does not state a publication date; Nintendo’s 2026 verification of its separate 256GB catalog listing is not the publication year of that listing.
